Thread: Power Hacksaw
27/08/2020 23:22:02

Hi JA,

Not sure of the make. I biught it about 6 -7 years ago from an ebay seller in Australia and the name has come off. There are a few advertised on ebay.

The round item in my pevious post is a tube of bees wax, used to lubricate the blade.  The saw had done a lot of work and still performs well. Only had to replace the blade guide rollers which are only standard ball bearings.

I paid about A$350 but now they are normally selling for about A$650.  Just found this one advertised for A$396.

Thread: 1.0mm 2 flute cutter HSS or Carbide.
27/08/2020 10:59:28

I recently did some milling in brass with a 1.5mm cutter.

My mill speed is way too slow for such a little tool so mounted a Dremel on the side of the mill head and used the table DRO for positioning the job.

Get a quote from one of the 3rd party repairers. Much cheaper than an Apple store.

JA,

I use one of these weekly and it will cut 4" steel. It is compact, sits on top of a milk crate as a stand and can be picked up with one hand.

Thread: 6" Stainless Steel Pipe

You would need a BIG one Hopper. I have a panel beaters hammer but it is only suitable for thin metal and used while the metal is red hot. Much easier to cut and weld as already suggested.

The hydraulic hose makers use a press to squeeze a swage around the end of hose fittings to reduce its diameter but that is special purpose build machine, not suitable for this application.

Thanks Nick, But is was a tongue in cheek reply to the post made by Hopper on an earlier post. laugh

The Australian aborioginals also invented a spear trower called a woomera which enabled them to throw greater diatances. Some had a piece of sharp quartz rock in the handle for cutting and sharpening. The woomera was also used for deflecting enemy spears in battle.and as a fire making saw and as a receptacle for mixing ochre for ceremonies.

I am absolutely gob smacked as I had originaly thought about buying a ring rolling machine but did not ralise that they were CNC controlled and cost millions of dollars.

ring roller.jpg

As I cannot afford such an expensive machine, I will have to manually bend a piece of 15 x 5mm flat bar into a ring with a press or by banging it around a piece of old pipe with a hammer and weld it together.. Probably use 16 x 8mm flat to allow for a machining tolerance.

Can anyone advise me if this would work ?

I'm assumin g that your are refering to the fires started by Aussie bolwers, laying down a fast one agains the opposition. (sorry about that. I will take my bat and go home now)

What tool are you refering to ? And a photo of the part would be helpful for advise on what to do as I have never seen a track rod for an Austin 7.

Thread: Eccentric turning
23/08/2020 05:04:53

My eccentrics are made the reverse of the conventional arrangement and have the female slot in the eccentric instead of the strap. Turning an external slot in the eccentric is easier than boring an internal slot in the strap.

eccentric 1.jpg

The faces of the eccentric straps machined and the casting bore cleaned up (left undersize). Position of cut marked out using digital readout on the mill. Holes for bolts drilled. Straps cut in half and the mating faces machined flat.

eccentric 2.jpg

The 2 halves of the strap bolted together with a piece of shim material in between. (replace with thinner shim later to adjust the gap). The strap then clamped between 2 plates and centred on the lathe.

Then the eccentric strap can be bored straight thru to the finished diameter. No difficult internal slots to bore. The outer, larger bore then turned.

The strap then turned over to machine the opposite side. A dial indicator used to re-centre the strap but is not that critical as the outside recess is only a clearance fit with the mating eccentric.

eccentric 3.jpg

Material for the eccentric being turned and and the strap used as a gauge for a running fit. Then parted off and face cleaned up.

eccentric 4.jpg

Eccentric centred on the mill and an undersize hole drilled thru, using the DRO to measure the offset from the centre.

Then returned to the lathe and used a centre in the tailstock to position the eccentric on the chuck. Chuck jaws carefully tightened to hold the eccentric in position for the filal boring of the hole. (could have used a boring head on the mill but did not have one at that time)

Thread: Hardware for the shop

When I first set up my workshop I stocked it with materials that I thought I would need and still have some which was never used. Best to buy as you need them for a specific project and get a few extras which you then keep as stock. The same goes for a lot of tooling.

Thread: Do you clean the workshop up every day?
21/08/2020 23:40:01

I have a good clean up every now and again but more important to me is to finish what I am making. My man cave is a workshop, not a show room. Also do a clean when I have trouble finding what I'm looking for. (like the floor) teeth 2

Thread: Play Day at the club
21/08/2020 01:22:23
Yesterday was originally scheduled as a work day at our model engine club when the grass would be cut and ground maintenance carried out but because there have not been meetings and open days for the public due to the CoVid restrictions, it was decided to have a play day instead for a few members with engines.

Hi Andre,

Just as scarce in Australia where I am. Odd-ball diameters may be used in gas/chemical industries but finding a15mm slice will be virtually impossible. Metal suppliers that offer cut to length service normally only sell the common sizes.

Thread: Issues trying to silver soldering a 3" copper tube

I was surprised at how much hotter a propane / oxugen torch is compared to MAP gas.

Today tried to braze held a small part and the MAPP gas torch melted the brazing rod onto the job after 4 or 5 minutes. Tried the oxy torch on a very low flame and melted in less than half a minute.

Thread: Laser cut items
16/08/2020 23:24:00

Spokes on my wheels where Laser cut from 5mm and 8mm MS and they had a hard skin on the edge where it was cut and a slightly rough surface. They were within +/- 0.2mm of the correct size.

0.5mm machining allowance is a bit small. As you are going to bore the holes anyway, I would leave an extra mm or 2.

You could adapt a power feed unit for a milling machine. Mains powered, forward and reverse function and variable speed. Do a Google search on the web and ebay for suppliers.

Use a good flavoured oil on the tooth brush.

Some leave an awful taste in your mouth. cheeky
