Thread: Looking for an electric drip feed oiler pump
25/09/2022 12:43:41

These pump modules from Interlube are used in their automatic lubrication systems in trucks and operated by an electric motor to turn a cam to press the plunger. They are available with volumes from 0.01 - 0.1 cc/stroke. A mechanical version is used in the Model Engineer lubricator for steam engines which I listed above.

A possible solution to lubricate the chain on your bike is to use one operated by a 12v motor/gearbox (possibly a windscreen wiper motor) , solenoid or mechanical linkage to clutch/brake lever, etc which could give a shot of oil every time operated. Just an idea.

Clive, If the lubricator is for your lathe, why are you looking for a 12v system ?

There are lots of 220/240v automatic lubrication systems on the market for lathes, process machines, etc

Automatic lubrication systems are used on trucks (lorries) to distribute grease .

Like this unit from https://www.graco.com/gb/en/vehicle-service/product/25c990-grease-jockey.html

Interlube is another supplier of automatic lubrication systems.

Thread: Silver solder wire / rod size
23/09/2022 11:33:30

Not all silver solder is the same and contains different percentage of silver. More silver = more expensive. I use 15% silver solder for plumbing and general fabrication applications and 45% silver solder for boilers and valves, etc.

Solder with a lower silver content has a higher tensile strength and higher melting point. Solder with a higher silver content has a lower tensile strength and lower melting point but can give a stronger joint because it flows better into the joint. (better capillary action). Solders with different melting points are handy when assembling components made up of multiple parts that have to be soldered separately in stages.

Thread: Must have material stock?
18/09/2022 23:53:23

When I first set up my home workshop, I purchased what I thought would be a good supply of stock material. I still have some of it after 10 years. I don't buy material in kit form and purchase it as needed for the project. I normally buy extra because I know that it is a size that I use.

As stated, all supplies are made to a tolerance and not to an exact size. Hot rolled, to a wide tolerance and precision ground to a tighter tolerance. (tolerance specifications found on-line). If I need material that is on the maximum supplied size,  I ask if I can check the thickness before they cut a piece for me.

Thread: Best machining process

The first paragraph states " I have a piece of 304 75mm x 12mm x 80mm stainless bar to make this from". Why buy a second and waste the first piece ?

Thread: Use of small dies
10/09/2022 02:33:21

I have made some small threads, down to M1.2 and found it difficult to start cutting (by hand and using a tailstock die holder) and found that the best solution was to make the part a bit longer, with a reduced diameter and cut off the excess after the thread was made. The smaller diameter is easily threaded and acts as a guide for cutting the full size thread.

The Dec.2011 edition of MEW has an article for making an adjustable broach for cutting internal keyways.

(I put this in the Stuart Twin Victoria post.but should have been here)

Thread: How on earth do you make a Fire Hose
07/09/2022 13:54:00

Fire hoses are believed to be invented in the Netherlands in the late 16th century, which were nothing more than long tubes made from hundreds of strips of leather sewn together

Fabric hoses have two different fiber yarns that are woven together to form a hose jacket. The yarns that run lengthwise down the hose are called warp yarns and the yarns that are wound in a tight spiral around the circumference of the hose are called the filler yarns.

A hose with a square/radial weave will not stretch and expand like one with a diagonal weave, like on cable braid.

" what it's like to shower under a 10 bar pump" These are low volume pumps and no problem if you use the correct shower head.

Like the multi-purpose nozzles that you use on a garden hose. Select a single hole for a high pressure jet of water or one with many holes for a soft shower. The pressure in the water supply to the house remains high but the pressure at the nozzle discharge is lower because of the larger surface area.

Fizzy,

These are the pumps that I am referring to that are used in caravans and RV's. Available with pressures of 130 and 160 PSI.

The flywheel on my engine is held by 2 tapered keys, 90 degrees apart.

The taper slot made by making a guide bush with a deeper slot to hold a tapered shim. The flywheel was mounted square on the press and the broach pushed thru at an angle. Take care to back off the pressure on the ram often so the broach is not bent too much and breaks (broach is not aligned with the axis).

A second key slot was machined in the guide bush for aligning the bush with the first slot in the flywheel when the second was made.

(PS. My first attempt at broaching a 3mm wide slot, sheared the drive pin in a light drill press that I was using as a press and is not recommended)

Thread: Reverse direction of shaft driven by toothed belt.
28/08/2022 11:41:08

How would a double sided tooth belt reverse the direction of the driven shaft ?

When a flat belt is twisted to reverse the direction, the same side of the belt is in contact with both pulleys.

Thread: Drawing a saw blade - help!
28/08/2022 08:13:56

Nothing better than a good challenge if you have plenty of time on your hands to get the brain cells working. I started to model the hole saw but ran out of it !. Maybe later when I find some. dont know

28/08/2022 03:30:39

Hole saws like the one shown are fitted to a spindle and use a twist drill to centre the hole. Available at bigger hardware stores. They can be used on wood and sheet metal.

Dave, Another feature for you to incorporate is that the teeth ate set to give clearance for the saw. One tooth is bent out and the next tooth bent in. (The final grind appears to be in line with the drill centre)

Paul.

Similarly with Amazon.

I don't normally order thru them but after a recent purchase have received a lot of spam, requesting updates/payments, etc to Amazon Prime and Masrtercard, neither of which I use. The goods did arrive on time from the USA.
