Thread: removing a sleeve from a blind hole. |

Yes . I want the whole mechanism below the visible nut out. I agree the locking bolt should slide out but won't. Have tried all that. |

Sorry , I was a bit unclear about the sleeves. The main drill sleeve is out. The one I can't get out is the one that locks the drill sleeve into the body of the attachment. Wondered about a gear puller but don't have one. Edited By capnahab on 06/08/2015 23:48:18 |

I am cleaning up various bits that came with my lathe. I have a drilling attachment. After a lot of penetrating oil and fiddling I have got the sleep out (see photo). It was stuck partly with rust. It is held in by pair of half nuts that are pulled together in the bore and lock the sleeve. They are in a blind hole. At some point someone has left this in the rain and the hole has filled with water and is a sump for an emulsion of water rust and oil. This is what subsequently causes the sleeve to get stuck. I want to remove the sleeve and clean out the sump. The bolt and external nut rotate freely through a sleeve and on the end is the inferior/bottom nut. The top nut seems to be part of the sleeve coming through the blind bored hole in the drilling attachment body. Its this sleeve that I would like to remove. Edited By capnahab on 06/08/2015 22:54:24 |

I need to make a chuck key. Not sure if it needs hardening at the business end but if I did need to harden it what would be the best type of steel to use ?. |

Very nice work Nick. Can I ask how you grind the single point tool for the tangential toolholder ?. Looks very nice there. I seem to remember there were instructions - But can't find them. Edited By capnahab on 12/07/2015 08:12:36 |

Thread: Changing apron oil - ? Flush out |

excellent, thanks Phil. I have even got some diesel. have sent you a message about the DSG. |

I am doing an oil change on a DSG 17. When I undid the plug nothing came out .. - not a good sign. I penetrated the sediment at the bottom of the apron with a bit of wire and pretty thick gloop of congealed oil came out followed by the 2 pints of oil. It's pretty clean, not much metal and still clear tho thick. I have to replace it with 68 grade oil. Should I flush the rest of the gloop out or just leave it. And what with ?.

OK guys they are 1/2 inch , 12 tpi, so BSW. Have to get all the staining crud out and top half of the topslide off without disturbing the relieving mechanism. Regarding image rotation , if it's my software in the viewer why is my post rotated and Jason's the right way up in the same window ?. |

ps , when I was at school anyone who put those round marks near the bottom crosslide allen screw would have been for it... |

this website thinks any image that is taller than wide must be the wrong way round and rotates it. Neil - any chance of getting some decent software ?. The pics below are rotated.

Bazyle, thank you. I think if DSG wanted to put a fine thread on their metal , developed in house , they can do anything they want. Reminds me of the time Beavis and Butthead , famously disrespectful of anyone and anything said that Lemmy could do anything he wants. The video has been removed but this is just as good. If Lemmy had a lathe it would be a DSG, possibly a Holbrook. ps don't think its fine from what I can see of the bolt.

Thanks , I am renovating this DSG lathe. I cannot get the nuts out (which are rounded) without disassembling the topside (- my next problem) , Any tips welcome. I have been avoiding tackling the brass/bronze nuts holding the topside screw captive as there is so little room to get a spanner at them. Its the reassembly I am fearful of. I do need to do it tho because there is 58 years worth of castor oil crud in there which is now staining everything and making the topside very stiff to use.

I need to replace the topside lock nuts on my lathe (1956 made in Yorkshire). The spanner that fits them is 13/16. Can anyone direct me to a table that will tell me what size nuts to buy ?. |

Cheers stueeee, am coming round to agreeing with you. I think I have an extra leadscrew connected arbor. Thanks for putting the pics up. |

Yes John, you're right , once setup I don't think they need to be changed very often. I need to check though. |

Very helpful capstan, getting there.. I am without power at the moment but I am sure I will now be able to fathom it out when I have. Thank you.
