Thread: Machine main power isolator switch - useable ? |
07/11/2022 23:14:54 |
As said by others that type of switch does have a tendency to malfunction, but if you have overcome this with years of use carry on. The isolator wouldn't be installed now in an industrial situation as there is no provision to Lock Off for machine maintenance. A new enclosed 16A TP IP65 rotary isolator costs around £15 so perhaps replacing would be good advice. Emgee |
Thread: ER40 collet lathe chuck fitting |
18/10/2022 23:16:24 |
Hi Tom If you can turn a ring of a thickness to suit the backplate register with a 72mm OD and 52mm ID you could use a 100mm diameter ER40 chuck backplate, this would enable any length to pass into the spindle. If the bottom surface of the backplate is true to the front face then you could drill the fixing holes to suit your spindle and bolt direct but using a DTI to check it is truly centered before and after final tightening. For an electronic edge finder the American firm PEC make 2 versions, I have one with 1/2" body and 0.200" parallel tip. Gives consistent indication in use and instructions say use it in a stationary spindle but I admit to using mine at about 200rpm. Emgee

Thread: Herbert 0V milling machine |
09/10/2022 09:51:41 |
Why risk messing up a good spindle when it is far simpler to modify a tooling arbor, I used an 0V for several years with a Clarkson Autolock and a 1/2" drill, the drill was on a modified arbor. So these days I guess an ER type chuck would be the choice because of the extra versatility, an R8 shank would be a good donor for the R0 needed. I never worried about using collets to get more clearance from spindle to table, it was always more than adequate even with a rotary table or dividing head fitted. Emgee |
Thread: Model Engineers' Day at the Forncett Steam Museum |
03/10/2022 09:20:55 |
Agree always worth visiting Forncett Steam Museum but the number of models displayed in the tea room was disappointing compared with earlier years, good spread of model steam engines in full steam and running in the field. The tour of working engines compared by Rowan is always a delight, such dedication to a project is hard to find and his enthuisiasm is catching. There were some other displays of interest but I didn't note the names. Emgee

In adition to those 30 taper shanks John listed is SKF30, this type has no provision for drive dogs and relies on the taper to transmit power, not equipped for draw bar use but is designed for retention by pull stud so is quick change tooling, standard equipment on the Emco F1 cnc milling machine and other Emco machines. Thread: 1 HP single Phase motor for mill |
23/09/2022 23:21:25 |
Carl I don't doubt it is a TP&N supply as that was the norm during the 1960's and 70's in domestic premises that had night storage heaters fitted, it was to help ensure a reasonable balanced load on phases. Emgee |

What type of power supply do you have coming into the service fuse ? Do you just want to have a 3 phase (+N) supply sufficient to power the 1HP motor ? Emgee

Hi Carl Do you need a Foot mount or Flange mounted motor, also what speed 1400 or 2800 and does the shaft diameter have to be a specific diameter ? Emgee |
Thread: cable core colours for 3 phase motors |

If phase rotation is important it's always best to confirm the 3 phase conductors ID is correct using a Phase Sequence testing instrument before connecting/testing any 3 phase equipment that relies on correct phasing. Emgee |

Robert Definitely not classed as an armoured cable and I have fitted hundreds of the correct glands to secure the braiding, how many have you fitted. ? Emgee Better description here: Edited By Emgee on 19/09/2022 12:28:54 |

Spec from Cleveland cables for SY CY and YY instrument/control cables at the following link. For clarity SY is NOT cosidered an armoured cable, in fact some of the braided screening leaves much to be desired, it can be very widely spaced, unlike SWA where multiple steel wires cover the full circumference of the cable. Thread: Towing on an A frame |
18/09/2022 09:55:29 |
Martin If you are planning any rallies abroad a trailer will be needed, "A" frame towing is not legal in many European countries. With a 1200kg load on a trailer + trailer weight will put you close to if not over the MGW of the Motorhome plated weight. Emgee |
Thread: gears for hand winder |
17/09/2022 09:47:38 |
The last time I saw a winder being used was by a UK Free Flight Team member at a test session prior to a World Championship. The winder acted in axial alignment with the length of the fuaelage which enables the motor to be stretched out and wound, retracting into the fuselage in stages so there are multiple what I term "knots" in the motor for maximum performance from the weight of motor. The plans shown will place the winder at 90 degrees to the motor axis so be more difficult to use if stretching and winding as described above. If Martin sees this he may have further helpful comment from an expert in the field.

Hi Robin Switching to another supplier charging the capped rate may prove difficult as it seems that unit costs are not available from energy suppliers at present, or at least I couldn't find any from those supplier sites visited. Emgee |
