Thread: cnc lathe spindle speed control problem

Trevor

Have a look at the Homann site for a solution, he does a board to provide the same function as the manual pot but controlled from Mach, link as follows.

EMG 12 only grinds the end of the cutting flutes, so flutes will not be restored to new cutting condition, Eddie has said he uses a lot which I take it to mean he's cutting the max DOC with the flutes doing the work, not just plunge cutting.

Thread: What type of paint is this
28/01/2016 13:39:53

Windy

I agree it could be powder coating because most things seem to be such low cost from China, you say a 'cheap' press so perhaps it's some other paint process that costs less than powder coating.

The process involves spraying powder onto the cleaned and dry metal part then baking in an oven. I leave a full explanation of the process to those with more knowledge of the subject than me but will add the powder adheres to the metal electrostatically, for this reason I don't think you could use the same process on your wood hull.

Thread: Details for a scroll saw
26/01/2016 22:21:04

Sam

Check out the design used for the Emco Unimat SL jig saw, you have a lathe so just follow the SL design and build it to suit your machine, you won't need to worry about cutting gears as you have different speeds available on the lathe spindle. If you need pictures and dimensions of the SLdesign just ask.

emgee, is that tool turret a commercial unit or elf build? Looking for something of that ilk for my CNC lathe conversion.

Hi Graeme, made from plans, see info at the following.

http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/showthread.php?t=18508

Check my albums for Turret pictures.

Raymond, picture of my tool turret, boring tool fitted to 1 socket ready for use. I use brass collets made to suit the tool whether a drill, boring bar or reamer. There are 2 M6 grub screws to lock the split collet in place, these can be seen in the pic. I mill a flat where the screws bear on (90 deg to the slit) so any burr does not prevent collet removal.

Thread: Tapping Cast Iron
25/01/2016 20:31:06

Iain,

To make a drilled block to ensure the tap is vertical just drill a hole through a round or square block, make sure the hole provides a good sliding fit over the tap and the block/rod is faced square with the hole. Thickness will need to be enough to reach at least beyond part of the parallel portion of the tap.

To use pass the tap through the block and locate the point into the hole to tap, lower the block to the surface and hold steady whilst tapping, once partly tapped you can release the block as the tap will be at 90 degrees to the surface.

For the cast iron thread I would use M6x1 with M6x1 threaded length of rod for adjustment.

I use the square bar method in Jason's picture, clamp the material in the toolpost and drill and ream from the chuck ensures an accurate bore for a round tool, slit after reaming.

In a rotary tool turret on a cnc lathe I use the round style, slit but screw clamped on the collet od, not the tool.

Nick, you may find it necessary to use a travelling steady with slender rods between centes, even with light cuts.

Thread: Where is the best place to buy material from
24/01/2016 18:21:40

Hi Bob

Unfortunately there are no metal suppliers where I live so always have to pay carriage and as you say it does put the cost up quite a bit. I use ebay and some of the usual suppliers who advertise on this site but normally make up an order to gain best terms for carriage, it does pay to shop around but only use known suppliers or the grade/quality ordered cannot be guaranteed.

Is it a Dewhurst fwd/rev switch ?

If it's not a Dewhurst do you have details of the switch terminals/connections ?

Thread: Parting Problems - Backlash ?
20/01/2016 15:49:58

Dan

I think you have answered your own question, the VFD is not coping with the torque required for the cut, perhaps it needs some adjustment for low speed output.

Jam up is either too much infeed or a too heavy cut whether you are turning, facing or parting but all are related to available torque at the spindle.

Sounds a bit back to front if the tool depends on an air supply for tool retention, agree with John certainly not a safe method, even with the enclosure in place.

Anyone having parts of text and most titles missing from view ?

Also in main site index only the first letters of words showing until the mouse is over them and the line is then visible ?

Using Vista and Chrome browser on a laptop.

Went to the ME show at Ally Pally, lots of tool and machine stands and the usual metal suppliers. There were a 'vast array of boats and ships but hardly any traction engines, I didn't see any IC engines at all, my apologies to the organiser if I missed them. Impressive model tracked loader, the operation of loading a model bulk trailer was certainly worth a few minutes viewing, hydraulic operation at 10Bar pressure.

All of the traders I remembered from years ago seemed to be there so if you want to stock up with tooling or materials you should be lucky.

My toolholders are Emco 5 size with M5x0.8 screws and take max 13mm sq tools, so your holders may be somewhat larger from the bigger lathe.

I have an Emco toolblock and holders but I don't recognise the number you quote, all of the toolholders I have use M8x.8 setscrews for tool height adjustment and tool locking in the holder.

Thread is M5x0.8, sorry for the error.
