Thread: LATHE BED SLIDE OIL |
06/12/2017 09:32:14 |
Hi Thank you for all the replies. The Oil was supplied by Morris's Oil Shrewsbury, one of the most respected lubricant companies in England. There is no question about quality of the oil, or any possible impurities. I have discovered that after numerous days of use on the lathe and mill it appears to go "a bit thinner" I can feel the slides and carriage are now significantly smoother and there is much less friction on the bed. After the initial shock of the viscosity, I am very please with the product. Ray

Hi I have recently purchased some "slide oil" from a very long established oil supplier. The idea being I would use it on my lathe and mill. I was expecting some "thinnish" type oil. When I opened my drum of oil I was rather shocked. The oil supplied to me has a viscosity similar to thick engine/gearbox oil, almost EP90 ( not quite) . In addition to this it is VERY, VERY TACKY. Similar to , or even MORE STICKY than treacle. I have applied it to my lathe bed, but to be honest it seems like a magnet for filings and swarf. I am just wondering what experiences other chaps have experienced with slide oil.

Thread: Simple way to control nema stepper motor |
30/03/2015 09:02:37 |
i have the motor connected to the mill, although be it on a very temporary fit.. using the speed control on the box, the the feed hand wheel will turn from approx 2 RPM ( for very slow feed) up to 150RPM (for rapid return). which seems just perfect. I assume the digital readout on the box refers to Htz. it reads from ZERO to 900.htz The motor responds normally from ZERO up to 620htz? then grinds and stops But restarts when below 620htz Steamgeek ,did you have this problem? will keep you advised of progress Thanks RAY

Following all of your kind advice, I purchased a stepper controller , pulse generator , as photo and connected them up to a 6 AMP supply and my NEMA 34. After playing with various Amperage and dip settings, the motor runs "reasonably smooth" - at most speeds - ( but not perfect) . Using the control box, the motor can be started, stopped , forward and reverses - with ease., The slowest speed is approx 5 RPM the fastest approx 200 RPM only. is this normal? The frequency indicator goes from 0 - 900, The motor runs happy from 0-600,,but once you turn it past 610 the motor grinds to a halt Should it run faster or smoother? Any advice is appreciated.. thank you ray Edited By ray jones 1 on 27/03/2015 19:19:41 Edited By ray jones 1 on 27/03/2015 19:20:12 Edited By ray jones 1 on 27/03/2015 19:21:25 Edited By ray jones 1 on 27/03/2015 19:22:23 |

I am new to this stepper motor and drives board. I am trying to set up a simple power feed to a bench mill as shown on some of theses threads. I have one NEMA 34 MOTOR ,, Mains power unit,, Mega Arduino board and TB 6600 Stepping motor driving board. fitting the motor to the mill is the easy bit.. I am not looking for full CNC. All I want is power feed, ,,variable speed and forward and reverse. Is there such a thing as a simple method to program or wire the driver and board please . regards ray

Thread: DC Lathe and Mill drive motors |
22/02/2015 17:52:07 |
Many Manufactures of Lathes and Small Mills, such as Warco, Toolco, Amadeal and others use a variety DC motors each with variable electronic speed control... The Motor speed variation is achieved by using Pulse Width Modulators... Do the DC motors and/or brushes need much maintenance? Is this system reliable?? Thank You |

hi John Thank you for the reply, Yes I agree the motor sizes you suggest would be ideal for the VMB..I have acquired a brand new unused variable motor control unit that came off a Myford VMB Mill. There are no instructions or specifications with it... Before I connect it to a motor, I am trying to locate the original motor spec . thank you ray Edited By ray jones 1 on 07/01/2015 03:13:10 |

Happy New Year everybody MYFORD VMB MILL I am looking for information on the Original variable speed motor These mills were sold by Myford, they came ready to plug into 240 volt single phase household supply. The system was based on a Danfoss variable speed unit housed in a robust black box. This box was bolted to the left hand side of the mill stand , together with a 220 volt 3 phase motor which was controlled using the box. I have looked on numerous sites on the net, including "Tony Griffiths LATHES' site , but I can't find the info I require.. I am trying to get the exact spec of the original 3 phase motor,.I.E. HP AMPS ETC. Does anyone have one of these mill set up as above? If so is the any chance I could get the info of the motor plate please ? or a photo of it please? I am very grateful for your assistance.. many thanks Ray

Thread: Myford 280 paint type and colour |
10/12/2014 04:13:50 |
Hi Dennis, Thank you for your reply. This 280 is green and "reasonable condition" paint wise, it needs a touch up here or there. Yesterday I detached a gear cover off the drive train and took it to the local paint shop. It is definately Hammerite finish. Only problem Hammerite is limited in colour choice. So they have suggested use a Hammerite mid Green as an undercoat, this gives exactly the right texture. They have identified the colour green as near identical to PEUGEOT CAR green. They have made up a 300ml aerosol of this colour to spray on as top coat.. thank you Ray |
