Thread: riding behind a 3.5 gauge locomotive
15/05/2013 19:00:58

No problem, like everyone said, just offset your coupling on the riding car. When I got my 5" gauge riding car from "Ride on Railways", I had them make me a custom coupling ... with 3 holes, the center one for 5" and the outside ones for 3 1/2" when running on dual track.

Thread: Boiler testing and regulators (ie throttles)
13/05/2013 18:29:07

All,

Quote from the Green Book

10.13 Any loss of pressure shall be fully investigated. Slight loss from blanking plugs and fittings may be allowed. The boiler fittings should be examined for integrity, thread quality and dezincification to eliminate any risk of subsequent detachment.

10.14 Pressure loss which cannot be accounted for or which is at an unacceptable level shall lead to the test being declared a failure.

10.8 For all further hydraulic repeat tests, i.e. subsequent to the initial hydraulic shell test, the boiler shall be fitted with the working components attached to the boiler shell to prove the pressure and structural integrity of the interface and the boiler fittings. This includes the pressure gauge. If the gauge is not of the full range required by the test (1.5 x PW) it shall be disconnected and a blank fitted. On completion of the test (1.5 x PW) the blank shall be removed, the gauge shall be reconnected and a pressure applied equal to the full range of the pressure gauge. The pressure is to be applied for a sufficient length of time to prove the structural integrity of the gauge fitting.

10.9 If practical, the superheater should be included in the hydraulic repeat pressure test. This requires a blank to be fitted on the outlet of the superheater. It shall be removed on completion of the test and the pipe reconnected. The regulator shall be in the ‘Open’ position for the test. For superheaters the Boiler Inspector shall assess the testing requirement on an individual basis and annotate the Written Scheme of Examination accordingly.

Thread: Conway Drawings - are there any glaring errors
12/05/2013 18:11:25

Yes the Boiler should be 14 1/4" long and not 14". See ME 19th Dec 1980 p1499

(Noit sure if current drawings have been corrected or not)

Thread: Boiler testing and regulators (ie throttles)
12/05/2013 15:20:26

I am not going to comment what fittings should be part of the hydraulic test and which ones should not.

But in my opinion the Regulator is part of the pressure system .... as one side of it is either in the boiler or off a bush connected to the boiler and will be at full boiler pressure.

Thread: MEW 203
09/05/2013 19:32:21

Must be your postie .... I nearly ALWAYS get my paper copy before the digital edition is uploaded.

I don't think people who take just the digital edition are "Cheap-Skates' .... I take the digital edition of ME, yes it is a lot cheaper, but I have enough paper in the house without adding to the pile.

I take the paper edition of MEW, as the digital edition is expensive for only 13 issues (rather than the 26 of ME for the same price).... I then sell the paper edition, and so I end up getting the digital edition for 50% of the cost!!!!

Just make sure you read the "Corrections" to the boiler size ... the original article/drawing shows it too short ... there should be a correction included.

Thread: Might prospective digital subscribers be put off ....
19/04/2013 12:11:40

I think the pdf's and print outs are at 72dpi (Print of the flash page whis is rendered for the screen), so to my eyes (and DC1's) appear a little fuzzy when printed.

I print them directly to a pdf file .... Readable yes .. but cannot use them to take measurements from.

I have purchased secondhand the paper copies for the last few years as I am building the 'B' Class and found that the Digital edition printout quality was not good enough.

Internet Explorer (Version 10)

I had the problem with the 'Enter' key not working when IE 10 was installed on my PC. This is fixed by enabling compatability mode.

Thread: using subscription on MEW app on I pad
04/04/2013 09:57:52

I have just checked my iPad (The original one) ... when I tapped the ME/MEW App icon, I got a login box where I had to enter my Username and Password, after this I get a choice of ME or MEW then I see all the issues, exactly the same as you do on the web site. I can read any issue in the archive.

Works perfectly for me. (Remember that you must have a Internet connection)

I can access both ME and MEW from my ipad, are you using the app or safari? You need the App.

You need to goto iTunes and download the app. (Search for Model Engineer in the App store)

Gary,

You have to register/sign in to access that site?

David

The two things I would be like to see included are the details for BA (0 to 14) and ME threads (40, 32 and 26 tpi) - (TPI, Tapping diameter, Clearance diameter and diameter for threading)
