Thread: What would you ban and why? (Definitely tearoom!) |
19/07/2022 22:23:17 |
DMB, a very objective subject. There have been gun massacres here in the UK, 2 of them. The end result a ban on automatic weapons and then pistols. Black powder pistols still possible to own. Rifle shooting is still a sport, target shooting is a fine art at 1000 yards. The United staes problem is that guns are easy to obtain and money is no object. A collectionof guns is fine. Small bore tartget shooting, full bore target shooting and game and clay pigeon shooting excellent past times and quite social. My brother and I were range officers able to run a shoot on the ranges teaching gun safety and gun control, never had any cowboys or I would have stomped on them. sadly all gone now plus most of the ranges too.

As our globe rotates it gives the Coreallis effect and by them the Jet stream, at the moment the jet stream is at low amplitude and has moved North. This brings the equator weather within reach of our shores. There seems to be more heating of the oceans at the equator, hence more violent storms aka. hurricanes. So more rainfall in different places than before. Now rainfall is so intense that landslides happen regularly, is that from de-forestation. What is the cause of that I ask? Is it El,Nino? To me there seems more Volcanic activity than before! In the old days the equator had the roaring forties so loved by sailing ships to make record voyages carrying goods. My sailing down there did not find such winds. |

Confucious said, 'Change is inevitable'. He did not say for the better! Ordinated lives, do this , do that but do it my way co's it costs more. My parents had a 0.5% mortgage in the middle 40's, in the 70's when I wanted one it was 16%. paid £600 a year and only £12 0ff the captal sum. I paid off in a lump sum. Then found out the BS was charging 100% more for the insurance on the house. Them £24, same ins. my pay £12. In 1964 my first new car a SAAB 95 cost me £375. in 2015 my new car VW cost £27000, who is taken for a ride: and I cannot work on it!

Thread: Speed 10 cross slide backlash |

Arc Eutrade sell the kit, go to the last page in their cataogue and look for projects. It may help you to do this mod if you also buy from Myford the small brkt. that the cross slide runs in as you can still use the lathe to modify the brkt. for fitting the bearings. |

The level of anodising is time based, ranging from AA% up thro. AA25. Colour is a hot dip again on a time basis. I did read that pen ink can be used. |

Would it be possible to make one from a suitable size spring ring like used to retain bearings in housings. They are not hardened but can be filed? |

Thread: Myford ML10 dog clutch dimensions |
12/06/2022 14:47:29 |
No oilite bush in my dog clutch, cut the leadscrew where the groove is and clean ends, insert the sleeve the right way round and carry on. Worth buying the graduated drum for the right hand end. it will be scaled for metric or Imperial depending on the lathe.. Mine is metric and has 3mm engraved on it. The drum is fixed to the lead screw. To use it for setting length I bring the tool to the job and then set the top slide to give me a '0' setting on the drum. |

It still causes embrittlement cured by annealing, i have seen fuel tubes on static geneartors crack at the nipples and as you say caused by vibration. Cured by fitting a flexible connection. |
01/06/2022 18:07:40 |
Age hardening of copper is normal. in oder machinery all connecting copper tubing was made with a coil in it. I seem to remember that in service or o/haul copper tubing was annealed to soften it again. |

I think that the wiki ref. is a German breech, they modified their M109's. The metal work was chemically blacked as was the US style breech. |

Re the accidents in turrets. Sometimes as the barrel is elevated the shell having been rammed into the leed can slip back, then, as the charge is ignited it explodes in the chamber with dire results. I know of 2 cases, one was an M107 8" howitzer and the other happened in the invasion of Iraq on an M109 Howitzer. The last one was shown on the tv reporting at the time, causing severe burns to close personell. The M109 was burnt out. |
Thread: Emergency Radio Format |
04/05/2022 07:53:11 |
An airburst nuclear weapon firstly has the Flash, secondly the outgoing blast. Radiation levels affecting out to 5kms. Then, the incoming blast and this is the one that does more damage, you hide behind a wall, survive the first rwo and then from behind the incoming blast that throws everything back at you. You could survive a nuclear blast if you had 18" of solid topsoil over you but you would have to stay there at least 3 days before you can get out. Then you do not know how much residual radiation you are walking through, or which way to go! Decontamination would be essential, drink and eat nothing on the srface but it is stated that fallen animals if carefully opened, the meat can be eaten. Tinned food and bottled liquids fine. Decontamination again first. Essentualy head upwind as fallout will go with the wind, That is only one blast but if they were in cascade you could walk into another zone! There would be very little chance of rescue! You are on your own. If you have a warning then ensure all skin is covered against flash, put your back towards any detonation and good luck. |
