Thread: Letterboxes |

My front door is in a corner and the wind in certain directions lifts the outer flap, dog responds by barking thinking there is someone there. I tell it's the wind and after a while she quietens down. I had to fit a cage as she will grab the letters and rip them up. The outer flap only goes so far when lifted and of course it gets damaged as the spring is a plastic torsion rod made of unobtainium. |
Thread: Hexagon holder for 13/16 dies? |
29/11/2021 14:05:03 |
If you start cutting threads with a Hexagonal die nut the pressure will burst the die nut, just clean threads with them or use to identify a thread.. They are particularly good for checking long threads and as they go slack you can tell if the thread is worn.. |
29/11/2021 07:15:37 |
Hexagon shaped dies are not used for cutting threads, they are used for cleaning damaged threads. Thread cutting dies are normally round with a slit and can be adjusted in the die holder. |

I have to go to the surgery and deliver the scrip and wait 3 days, but, when I go to collect I only get half the order and am given an IOU for whats missing. Usually get to go back 24 hrs later. I sked why they dont order enough but got no clear answer. At least I can buy a paper and a box of cakes. One point is that in 20 years I have never seen the same Dr. twice! Thread: Does charging your car battery on fast charge damage it? |
23/11/2021 14:52:41 |
The principle of a lead acid battery that I was taught was that it will take what it needs to re-charge. A battery low in charge will draw a deep current and as it starts to reach full charge it tapers off. Beware overcharging, so take note of the time and check regularly on it's condition. |

Thread: How do you stop brass tarnishing |
18/11/2021 22:17:09 |
Bernard, perhaps you are thinking of the golden finish on old instruments? It is laquer mixed with Dragons Blood. An interesting method as it is done hot, with great care as the laquer dries very quickly. I tried for a very long time to find the amount of mixture and where from. |

There is a product called Frigiline, mainly used on silver. Look it up, quoted at £17.00 or so per can. Sprayed or brushed and is very thin. |

Thread: US Army : Infantry Squad Vehicle |

The Yanks dont like, 'Yomping', that is marching from one place to another. They like to be carried to a place , do what they do, and then be carried back. These battle vehs. are fast and all terrain allowing hit and run a speciality. They would have a heavy calibre machine gun fitted as well. |

Thread: Headphones - any other deaf folk out there? |
07/11/2021 09:52:16 |
farmboy, that is an interesting fact. In the army radio operatrores would use one ear to use the radio and the other to receive verbal orders from command. Then, tank crew had a similar problem where the earphones were on one side but the other subject to the tank surondings. In both cases one sided deafness results. I joined the army at 14 and then progressed through training into using The Enfield No4 rifle. Then in the early 60's to the SLR. being a crackshot I was then exposed with no warnings to a lot of gunfire. Eventually being told I was 40% deaf and later posted to an Arty. Regt. with the armys biggest guns! Now the progressive deafness has left me deaf 100% in the left ear and about 85Db in the right ear. This is the point, any prolonged noise will cause deafness and I pity all the young people who have now attended all these music festivals where music is played at a very high volume and they will slowly get deafer and deafer as they age! I cannot hear music or radio or tv sound and live on screen text, Nor use a telphone, any contact with medics and the like is a written note! |

Thread: What is it |
31/10/2021 08:02:53 |
It is a Valve seat cutter/grinder spindle, the wire cage is to take up the size of the valve seat guide. Nothing to do with gun barrel cleaning or wrapping abrasive cloth around. You get a set of them with the valve grinding machine and various valve grinding hobs to fit tye size of valve you are cutting. |
