… what would it look like if you scaled it from zero ?

MichaelG.

[…]

Both data sets occurred in the same time, but as their dimensions and Y-scales are unrelated, the eye is required to look for a pattern. The pattern doesn't depend on scale and is usually more obvious if both lines use all the space available.

.

An admirable reply, Dave … but please let me be the first to bring Politics into this discussion surprise

… I am sure I have seen the Liberal Democrats using similar techniques to manipulate the way that viewers perceive presented data.

When one can buy a well made and fairly accurate bourdon type pressure gauge for around 8 US dollars (or your local equivalent) why are we discussing ways for the OP make an inferior alternate? […]

As a disinterested and uninterested observer … I would guess it’s something to do with Model Engineering vs playing with trains.

Bernard … I feel sure you are wrong.

I paid very little for this ‘pre-loved’ example, but it looks right to me.

… By mentioning it, I was simply trying to indicate that what Samsaranda noticed has been going-on for years.

recently bought [for reasons not relevant here] a long-discontinued Waterford clock … being a glass block with a small Quartz movement inserted.

Inspecting the components, I found:

  • Glass block : Made in Slovenia
  • Clock movement : Made in Japan
  • Clock case: Made in Indonesia

I wonder what they did in Waterford dont know

Thread: What grade of aluminium is best for making a pulley?
10/08/2023 09:59:45
Posted by Tim Stevens on 03/04/2023 20:31:34:

Dave warns against 'fabricated' pulleys, but what exactly does he mean by it? …

.

I suspect that Dave just meant ‘fabricated’ to mean ‘made by machining’ … but only he can confirm or refute that.

It is, however quite possible to fabricate Vee pulleys by using two truncated cones … either fixed together or keyed, with an adjustment mechanism.

I agree with Jason

Generalising outrageously from just a single comparison:

The textured green belts coming out of China seem to be a very good approximation of the expensive Swiss ones

… except in price !

Thread: Chester Cathedral : New model railway
10/08/2023 06:56:22

This may be of interest to some

I receive an eMail ‘newsletter’ from Chester Cathedral … the latest of which included this:

.

This summer, discover a brand-new 64ft long model railway created by Pete Waterman OBE and the Railnuts here at Chester Cathedral.

This year, the bespoke model railway features Milton Keynes railway station – a modern image model layout with some very special never before seen features and trains, and as before, Making Tracks offers you the opportunity to drive the trains on the railway layout using dedicated control tablets.

For 2023, the Railnuts teamed up with Tom Connell - a transport illustrator - to produce a picture for the event and there's an exhibition of his work beside the model railway.

Making Tracks 3 is open from 10am to 5pm Monday - Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturdays. Tickets are £3 per person, using the Cathedral’s summer entry charge, with free entry for children aged 5 and under.

Pre-book your entry ticket here.

Making Tracks 3 facts

  • The layout is a model of Milton Keynes station as it is today with seven platforms including all the surrounding building with their iconic mirrored sides
  • The layout took six months to build by a team of 15 people
  • There are four main loops with an eight track storage yard
  • The layout has 811 feet / 247 metres of track
  • The layout has around 30 trains being operated including the Caledonian Sleeper with 16 coaches – this is the longest passenger train currently operating in the UK between London and Scotland
  • All buildings, bridges and walls have been built from scratch including two large multi-storey car parks
  • 200 scale cars have been 3D printed
  • The layout has 25 working signals, 120 catenary masts and 40 hand-made trees
  • 80 square feet of teddy bear fur has been used on the model (no teddies were harmed!)
  • The longest train running is 22.5feet / 7metres long!

This is not a criticism, Dave … far from it !

But something is nagging me: By [ quite understandably] scaling your pressure graph from 970, are you perhaps exaggerating its significance ?

… what would it look like if you scaled it from zero ?

Paul. A napoleon's hat clock is not a loncase. Also as they are usually striking or chiming clocks, I would look for a plain clock ( no strike or chime ) for a beginners progect

Roy

.

I recommended the Napoleon’Hat [sorry, I forgot to mention striking version preferred over chimes] simply because it has a ‘Goldilocks’ sort of size, and is available dead-or-alive at realistic prices. Most are mass-produced items and there is much to be learned by simply dismantling and rebuilding one.

This was, I thought, exactly the point at which Paul wished to enter the fray.

It’s what I did, on the introductory ‘evening classes’ at Stevenage College several decades ago.

Opinions obviously vary … That’s fine.

It was more a reflection that to those of us in our 60's and above, and who haven't had much involvement with I.T. artificial intelligence is a concept beyond our radar. To me "A.I." would mean artificial insemination.

.

You have me utterly bewildered, Rob

If you were thinking of ‘Artificial Insemination’ why on Earth did you mention Aluminium ?

I tried very hard to answer your written question … but answering the unstated one in your mind is beyond this Human Intelligence.
