I was a professional programmer, paid to write in COBOL(s), FORTRAN(s), Filetab, C, C++, Sculptor, Perl, Informix-4GL, SQL, MS-BASIC, Visual-Basic, Pick-BASIC, and Delphi (Pascal-like). Also for my employer, I wrote reports on the applicability of Algol, Forth, BASIC, LISP, Pilot, Pascal, Python and Ada. Plus a comparison of the vices and virtues of the competing RDBMS of the day. Not only can I write BASIC, more than one variant, but I've had plenty of experience with other languages in all applications apart from real-time.
Oh dear Dave, you had a very limited experience of computer languages, no Coral 66, Pl/1 and its interactive subset CPS , IBM Assembler, APL and RPG. Richard |

With my experience of living in an all electric house with an air source heat pump the biggest increase in electricity used will be the heat pumps. Our yearly usage is 13000 kWh. |

It is interesting to look at this report from Volvo (owned by Geely) which shows the C02 over the lifespan of various versions of the Volvo XC40. The ICE version has a much lower carbon footprint for manufacturing and the crossover for the electric version is up to 150,000 Km depending on how the electricity used is generated. As my XC40 is 5 years old and I have only done les than 45,000 Km I think I must be saving the planet! https://www.volvocars.com/images/v/-/media/applications/pdpspecificationpage/my24/xc40-electric/pdp/volvo-cars-LCA-report-xc40.pdf |

That's fair enough. The 3 jaw mayn't have the same grip, but it's horses for courses. I tend to find I need to use hex bar, both for models and railway work, plus I've never gone for records on cubic inches per minute metal removal. So the 3 jaw suits for me, with soft jaws to hold parts where there's not much to get hold of, and occasionally the 4-jaw independent for odd profiles and eccentrics. Hot-rolled black bar is something I've not seen in a while, though presumably it's still available.
You can hold hex bar in a 4-jaw SC chuck! |

There seems to be misunderstanding as to how Windows uses standard user folders. These are all of the form c:/users/name/foldername where name is a user name, Default or Public and foldername is Documents, Pictures Video and Downloads. These folders are also Libraries which are virtual containers for user content. Any user created folder such as c:/pictures or D:/pictures is completely separate from the windows created default folders and could not be accessed by reference to the single name Pictures unless a location change has been performed as Dave has shown in the Picture-Properties-Location tab. I also asked Solidedge to save a picture and it came up with a dialogue box that allowed you to select the file location. I selected Pictures and it saved it OK. It does not automatically store it in pictures. Graham has said that he created the D:/pictures folder himself, not that it came with his PC. As Solidedge does NOT automatically use the Pictures folder I suggest that there is a different reason for the install to fail. |

I have all my user folders referenced as d:/users/richard/... and have used this on many computers and it is the Microsoft recommended way of doing it. I do not think the problem is with Solid Edge as, if you search for error 1606 during install, there are many references to problems with program installs and one of the main reasons seems to be corruption of the registry, especially if a program uninstall went wrong. There are various solutions including using compatibility mode to install the program and let it try to correct errors or use a PC optimisation tool to search for errors.

I use Windows 10 on my desktop and always have my user folders ( my documents, pictures etc) on a separate drive to the system and I have just installed Solid Edge without a problem. I do not think that Solid Edge does need to or actually does access the Picture folder, certainly not in my case. Is your computer standalone or part of a network? Also is it your personal machine or a company machine as this can affect permissions?

Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Opera are all Chromium based browsers and you can install add-ons to Edge from both Microsoft and Google so I cannot see what the problem is. I have used Edge and Bing from when they were first released with no problems.

I don't think you can criticise the whole of British industry concerning diesel engines for BR as companies such as Paxman had been making successful diesel engines for naval use such as submarines from before the second world war, see here |

One of the worst Cobol programs I had the misfortune to try to debug had been written by somebody who thought he understood structured programming and contained several pages of nested IF... ELSE... statements making it almost impossible to debug. One useful feature that is not used now is Decision Tables which make the logic of a problem clearer. In the early 1970s we used them in a system that enabled a list of equipment for a new coalface to be produced from a simple list of parameters such as length of face, type of supports etc. The logic was in the form of decision tables embedded in the Cobol source which was then put through a pre-processor to create source code. The decision tables were created by the user engineering department so they had control over them. Initially we used an ICL Cobol pre-processor but I converted them to IBM using a pre-processor obtained from the States and written by Grace Hopper! I also split the original large program (2 boxes of cards) into sections which could be compiled separately and then dynamically linked at run-time so making amendments easier.

We live in an area with a lot of dairy farms (South Cheshire) and I understand the water pressure is high because the farms use a lot of water. We had to install a pressure reducing valve to reduce it to 3 bar as it was causing us problems. There are also a high number of water leaks in the distribution system that need to be repaired because of this. |

As someone who has actually used one I found on my Myford S7 that the vibration on the original belt from motor to countershaft made it almost unusable in high speed but replacing the belt with a Powertwist belt reduced the vibration considerably. |

Thread: Bassett Lowke 1.5" Burrell Plans Required |
09/11/2020 16:32:09 |
The drawings I use are scanned in versions of the originals and originally I made the plates to these plans but once I started trial assembly of the cylinder and motion I found the holes were in the wrong place so I remade them to fit the eccentrics and connecting rod! Also I re-designed the boiler to have separate hornplates so the width between the hornplates was different to that on the plans.
