Is this the regulator you have.

If so I have the same as you including the torch.

Like you I'm unsure about how to set it up so please keep posting I'll be very interested in your observations and any further help you get.

When you said turn it off at the end of play is that done using the regulator or with a separate in line valve which is screwed into the gas bottle?

I recently bought a 10v slide valve from stuart, didn't ask for a machined one but that's what I got. Stuart may be now supplying them only fully machined.

The one that I got had the cavity machined off centre so it was effectively useless. I rang stuart and they immediately sent me replacement which was machined perfect.

Just looking at your photo the lands on either side of the cavity appear to be uneven which was the problem with mine. Could be just the photo deceiving me but it's worth checking.

With reference to your original post, if you fit a leadscrew dial do make it adjustable so it can be zeroed before use.

I put a fixed dial my M many years ago and whilst it has been very useful it is sometimes a pain marking pencil lines on the dial and doing mini calculations to make adjustments.

Yes, agree with Pete, looks great.

The smoke stack puzzled me but having looked at the drawings on steves website I can see that it is for the engine exhaust.

Today I completed a long overdue upgrade on the m type

A new bronze cross slide nut fitted, supplied by David George, thanks again David.

The nut has been made very accurately and the feedscrew is a near perfect fit with just a tiny amount of backlash

Also took the opportunity to add mini thrust bearings front and rear of the bridge plate, similar to the ml7 improvement.

The whole job makes for an amazing improvement, feels like I have a new lathe

About a year ago I ordered a 6mm strut at £27 for my sx2p but it was out of stock.

I noticed that they have now reduced the price of the same strut by £6

Unfortunately it is still out of stock!!!!

Thanks again. Given the small size of your boiler I was thinking it may be possible to complete the annealing and soldering of a boiler that size with a canister type torch, which is what I have.

Apparently not, I'll give it some more thought as clearly I need equipment with a much greater heat output

What about your torch. Do you have one that attaches via pipes to a large propane gas bottle or have you managed to do all the annealing/soldering with a small gas canister torch?

Very impressed, nice job.

I've been thinking about making a small boiler. I have 4 small engines and would love to see them run on steam.

I have a few questions.

Firstly, boiler material, what type/grade of copper and bronze have you used, also what gauge for the tube and the end plates and what grade of silver solder have you used.

Secondly, what type of torch have you used for your heat source for the annealing and silver soldering.

Finally a general question for anyone. Would this size of boiler be suitable for a small engine up to say stuart 10v size.

If you want an inexpensive set of small needle files try the 6 piece blue spot mini file set on ebay.

At £3.89 for the set you have little to lose and a lot to gain.

I bought a set from Boyes in York nearly two years ago, I've used them a lot

They are cheap and cheerful but nevertheless great value for money.

Hi Chris,

Looking at your picture below the pin is clearly visible so would be easy enough to remove if necessary.

The later Myford builds had the pin machined flush with the center ball and after many years it became virtually impossible to locate the ends of the pin making removal a real headache.

Your Myford built lathe, 1944 is it, clearly has Drummond made parts which would probably be right at that time.

The handle looks like Drummond made one , a slighty different shape to the later Myford handles, although the handle knob remained the same throughout. The bridge plate is a Drummond, the later Myford plates were countersunk for the three cheese head screws.

You have some good advice here, not a lot I can add.

I bought my taper reamers from Tracy tools, good company, never bought anything from them that I have been unhappy with.

I made some twenty tooth drummond gears many years ago. Drilled the pin holes the same size as smallest diameter and then reamed by hand for the pin. Very easy in cast iron.

From your first post in this thread you say you "admire" the taper pin method of securing the topslide handle on your M type. WHY?

Do you plan to remove the pin for any reason. If you are, good luck, they can be right b******* to get out. If and when the handle is off the machine do fit a topsllde index dial before replacing it, not difficult to make one, more details on request.

Yes you're right Chris it's not original, I didn't read the listing.

Improvements, well the vee drive definitely, the stand and self contained countershaft, the bench countershaft.

They also prototyped a new apron which incorporated an extra gear to reverse the rotation of the saddle handwheel. I suspect that is all it was though, I have seen no evidence that it ever went into production. However I would love to be proved wrong on that point.

On the downside Myford did stop using the horn handles replacing them with their standard pattern steel ones, they cheapened the half nut arm with a more lightweight casting pattern and what I appeared to me was an inferior grade of cast bronze. They were no where near as durable as the drummond arm which was originally made from cast iron and later models from bronze. The drummond arms were much heavier and thus more substantial the later Myford ones were much more prone to wear and subsequent fracture damage.

These would have been made from parts supplied by drummond brothers in 1943.

The later post war lathes had the myford "improvements"

HI all

In the photo is a brass extrusion supplied by stuart models for the eccentric straps on a stuart 10v reversing gear mechanism

I am not making a stuart 10v engine but one of a similar size, non reversing and just using one half of the extrusion to make one strap 5mm wide 16 mm bore.

My intention is to machine the strap as per the stuart drawings which would involve slitting the strap for an adjustment screw.

Do I slit first, add the screw then bore or bore first then slit and add the screw.

My problem with the latter is the possibility the slot may open up or close after slitting, or I am I worrying over nothing?
