Thread: Query - Derek Brown's Pipe Bender - MEW 297
11/10/2020 16:50:44

I've had some fun making one of these.

Currently making a small pot boiler and will be using some 3/16" pipe to couple the hand pump to the clack valve.

So I decided to have a go at making one.

I drilled the baseplate with all the holes but so far have only made formers etc. for 3/16" pipe.

Like I said it's been fun, enjoyed making it, came together well.

No pipe at the moment need to order some.

Anyone else "havin a go"

I think you would to cut a channel for the exhaust port. If you try to distort the cladding when you tighten up the exhaust the cladding will just buckle.

Is the cladding aluminium? If yes I am left wondering why the anodising did not crack when you formed the curve. What gauge is it, can you put a Mike on it to find out, I'd be interested to know.

Also can you give more details about how you formed the curve. Was it as simple as you make sound to get such a neat curve, no clamping involved?

Thanks geoff.

Great work doc, once again I admire your attention to detail

Dad was an aeromodeller.

Sunday mornings he would put his kit in his backpack, pick up his assembled aeroplane, climb on his bicycle and off he went to see his mates at the flying field.

One morning he slipped as he set off, the wing dipped down in front of the handlebars and plunged into the spokes in the front wheel. Crunch crunch and a broken wing.

Dad was very reserved but on this occasion it was one of the few times I heard him swear.

Lovely Jim, lots of detail and a good combination of home made and ready made parts.

Well done

No Jon,

They're not tee nuts just flat lugs cut from 6mm flat.

Cut to the same length as the width of the tee slot and attached to the tray with two small screws.

They slide into the tee slots. The round head screw is tightened which lifts the lug upwards and clamps it in place.

The tray is set up so it just clears the bed.

Hi Jon,

This works well for me

20180627_143814.jpg

A simple alloy tray, keep it low profile so it will pass under your largest chuck.

Two lugs are screwed to the back. These locate in the end tee slots and are secured in place with two brass screws, one through each lug.

The leadscrew guard is cheap and cheerfull but very effective. Other brands are available!!!

hope this helps Geoff

Well I like it David. Looks great, and as I said in an earlier post the boiler is superb.

Well done

Geoff

I'm sure you will get some suggestions for your next engine. Have you made one with a slide valve. A lot of people go from the simple oscillator to a simple slide valve engine

Very good work David, l like the former as well.

I'll be interested to see how you link it all up with your mini oscillator

Just had a look at your picture file and the boiler snaps.

You've made a really good job of it, looks great

I can't stop looking at this engine.

Small details catch the eye.

The twisted con rod, the soft edges on the valve coupling, the fluted column.

Sumptuous. Like many others I eagerly anticipate more details

Hi Dr G

Trust me and Jason, last post, the method works.

Here is a photo of an inverted engine, same one as Jason's which uses a 10v cylinder. You can see the machined outer surface is concentric with the lower cylinder cap. The tapered section is held horizontal in the vice but still with the bore resting on the s.s. bar

20200620_155223.jpg

Also did the con rod using the same method, 3mm bar through 6.5 hole20200408_093045.jpg

Dr G

You can mill the rough cast outer rim of the cylinder concentric with the bore

Pass short length of silver steel about 8mm diameter through the bore.

Clamp the cylinder in a machine vice but push the bore down on to the s.s bar which will be resting across he top of the vice jaws

Take a light skim of the rim with the cutter and lock the cutter

Rotate the cylinder a few degrees at a time and take more skims making sure for each skim the bore is resting on the s.s

Keep rotating until the whole rim is skimmed and finish with a flat needle file

Sorry no photo

Jason thanks for reply,

My main concern was safety, I would be quite happy to experiment with the regulator to get a good flame. My concern was that it appeared that people used the regulator to close or isolate the gas supply, which to me seemed unwise.

Reading Simon's post above it would appear that gas cylinders are supplied with an on/off valve fitted which makes sense to me. Presumably they are blanked off at the time of purchase?

........and them o rings are great, good compression.

Tricky to fit but worth the effort

Looks good Ron,

I like the way you have fitted the piston, never seen that before.

Assume you threaded the end of the rod and through the piston and the nut is a lock nut.

I just threaded mine tightened it but it still came loose!!!!!

Your method noted for future engine

When finished, I always turn the gas off using the valve on the top of the cylinder.

Hi Anthony

So you have a valve, like in the photo below screwed into bottle and the regulator screws into the tee.?

Is it correct to say the regulator should NEVER be screwed directly into the bottle. Always via a valve?

So now Im wondering about the best way to drill the mounting holes for the valve chest and cover. I don’t want to end up with it on the piss, like it is on the cover of my book. I’m thinking of clamping everything together, and drilling through as a stack.

I would drill the holes in the valve chest then clamp the chest to cylinder and spot drill through the holes on to the valve face.

Remove the chest and drill the holes tapping size inthe cylinder

Next clamp the chest to the cover and jig drill through

Should all line up perfect
