John, have you looked at the switches that are incorporated in the battery terminal? They are also available on ebay at the same ratings.

Why not use a proper battery isolator switch ? Plenty on ebay rated at 200 amps for about £6.00.

I,ll back up Grahams opinion of the Hogan, on my Webley Raider 10 (pre 2006) at 11.7ft/lbs all I can hear is the hammer spring! I doubt the rats hear anything before.

I'm also playing with K baffles just for fun and in the past have used the "hair curler" with scotchbrite type material to good effect.

FWIW.

Template and bush for hinges IF you have a lot to do, otherwise mark up and cut by hand .

For mouldings in situ use a bearing guided bit.

For accurate repetition use a router table.

I use various cheap routers handheld for in situ work like cutting purfling grooves in acoustic guitars (bosch pof, power devil and B+Q) but a Triton 3.5 hp ( I think) in the router table combined with an Incra Jig for repetition work.

Look on Youtube for instruction.

John, have you looked on MadModder to see how Rob Wilson does his nameplates? Some excellent ferric chloride etching done by him, sharp and crisp edges.

Many thanks to both of you. I had no idea about any of these even though as a boy I saw bound volumes of ME in his study at home.

Now to find out where to get copies or do the digital archives go back that far ?

I wonder if anyone can offer any information on a series of articles from either ME or MEW from (I think) the late 70s to mid 80s.

The series was based on the memories of apprentices in engineering and their antics at work but also in some cases, gave names of senior engineers/instructors.

My memory tells me that in one article my father was named, however my memory is not always to be relied on and I may be wrong !

If my memory is correct I think the article was written/contributed to by an apprentice at Woolwich/Greenwich arsenal.

I know very little of my fathers history ( he died aged 82 when I was 14) mother died when I was 6, but I do have him to thank for my practical skills and interest in all things mechanical.

His name was Nathaniel (Nathan) Sharpe and at my birth was based in Hartlepool (West as it was then) and ran his own small company.

If anyone can help I'd be grateful.

Day started ok , rushing about to get thing done before starting a new job next week. Came in for lunch and switched PC on to check mail etc and saw mail from new employer. New employer (Hotel) tells me that bookings are down so no job. Offered job on Thurs last week and accepted, multiple emails about start date/time up till yesterday, send new starter forms back today including health history, 2 hours later get "no job" email. Coincidental that my only previous health prob was a 3x bypass 8 years ago (should have been 4x as per angiogram) heart attack 2013 on artery that should have been done, stent same day. Health probs solved just been checked out by cardio dept and given all clear, some very minor loss of function and also very minor COPD caused during the bypass. Why do people not ask for GP evidence of fitness to work before writing me off? Job was a nothing job, just maintenance changing bulbs/tap washers but it was at home and meant I didn't have to travel anymore but would have paid the bills. Myself and 16 mates have tried to book rooms throughout the year to find they are nearly fully booked through to Sept. Lies and BS, I'm drinking tonight.

Fizzy, I moved my L5 on a trailer 360 miles, used multiple scaffold boards and supported them with axle stands. I then used the trailers manual winch to haul it on board using rollers made from old 2" galv pipe. I had some help from the seller but handled it mostly alone including the off load and positioning. If you have help you should manage it without too much sweat. Avoid dismantling if at all possible!! Trailer was a car transporter borrowed from a mate.

Have you tried Janikas music store on Ebay? Looks like they have a good selection of trapeze tailpieces. I have bought from them and am happy enough with their service/quality.

As an edit to my 2nd post I,ll change the wattage figure for the converter from 1100W to 1500W, apologies.

The very quick calc is one I was given by an instructor at Maddon generators more years ago than I care to remember and is the one I,ve used at work to calculate the generated output required to start a motor of any size (3PH) from a mobile/portable Genset--- works for me--- for the previous 35 years. Just use Ohms law to apply it to motor Wattage.

I do agree that the L1 figure is "iffy" but is probably correct given that the inverter is driving L2/L3 through capacitors. Small changes of capacitor values serving L2/L3 would give more balance to the circuit.

Doing the calc L1+L2+L3 in running Watts= 776 W, so given the motor/winding temp 1100/1300 W is somewhere very close.

The motor/winding temp will fall with better phase balance.

Do the calc, Total V(L1+L2+L3) divided by Total A (L1+L2+L3) This also puts you somewhere close.

There will always be variation due to temp and stopping/starting a motor during testing will always make it worse as the motor does not dissipate start up heat until it,s been run for a while.

Quick and dirty way of working it out from the under ower figures posted:

Multiply highest voltage by highest amperage = approx watts that winding, mutiply that by 3, multiply that by 0,8 .That should be accurate enough for most purposes. I figure it at about 1.1 to 1.3 Kw.

I may have asked this question before but need to ask it again because I have no idea where I saved the info (getting old!!).

Some years ago in ME a short series of articles dealing with the memories of an apprentice? at Greenwich/Woolwich arsenals was published. In one of these articles my father was mentioned.

I have no "history" of him and only knew him for the 14 years between my birth and his death.

Can anyone help? I thought I had the relevant magazines but can't find them.

The articles where probably published in the 1980/1995 era but I,m not sure of the date or the authors name.

Any help anyone? Thanks.

While not quite on topic but still a "materials" point, I emailed CES today and had my mail intercepted by "Spamarrest". They asked me to verify my email address before me email would be forwarded to CES. Anyone else had this happen? I will delete the email and phone them instead.
