Thread: How Many People Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb on the Forum?
11/03/2022 18:01:48

Back in the day (1976) when I was a electrical apprentice I was informed by one lecturer that there was no such thing as a light bulb.
They were lamps and bulbs you planted in the garden.

One lesson I never forgot.

Thread: Starrett Tool Makers Steel Clamps
19/12/2017 09:15:17

Wow this brings back memories I made one of these as an apprentice project during my first year machining basic training with Rolls Royce Bristol in 1976 and it’s still in use now.

During this first year we made a large and small vice, centre finder, drill gauge, holding block, scribing gauge and various other useful tools and a toolbox to put them in.

The apprenticeship lasted 4 years, 1 years general machining and electrical work and 3 years in the works. I qualified as an Electronic Instrument maker which has given me the grounding I have to have a go at fixing anything.

I now see graduates coming into the business who have engineering degrees that have no practical experience of machining or engineering, these graduates stay about 18 months within the various departments (to get the tick in the box) then move on. They may be wizzes with software manipulation but cannot pick up a file and deburr a component.

As most of the components we use now are bought in finished I’m guessing this dinosaur has had his day with work engineering. The current new manufacture project I am working on is due to finish within the next couple of months, then we will change to component repair work, so I will have to stick to hobby engineering to keep the machining skills in place.

Thread: Got a Good Story About Buying a Lathe?
04/06/2017 13:52:44

Not a Lathe but a Axminster X1 Mini Mill.

Couple of years back there was an advert on the bay for a X1 mill but it had to be collected, turned out it was less than a 10 min drive from home.

The story with it, was the mill belonged to her ex father in law and it had been in her shed for a couple of years. As he failed to collect it she wanted it gone. The mill was in as new condition so I paid up and left a very happy bunny.

A couple of days later she emailed me to say she had found some outher bits which she thought might be related to the mill if I wanted them to go and collect them or she would bin them.

Turned out the outher bits were a full set of work clamps, three M2 collets, various cutters, some bar stock and a very nice 4" rotary table.

And the cost of this bargin a full Sixty Seven Great British Pounds.

Thread: LED Light Bulbs
08/01/2017 16:00:40

We have just had a kitchen extension fitted and 2 way LED lights were fitted (two indipendent banks of 4 lights). We had the same issue that the lights would glow dimmly when switched off. (one circuit only) To cure this I fitted a mains neon across the last light in the chain, this glows but is in the celing void so not seen and the LED light switch on and off normally. The two way switching cable (4 core) is acting as a transformer and inducing 80 Volts between adjacent cores of the cable caulsing the LED lights to glow dimmly without the neon.

Thread: Axminster tools very good fast service
24/09/2014 22:00:14

I had the miss fortune to damage my Axminster X1 mill on Sunday afternoon.

Once stripped down I found a damaged gear on the end of the motor assembly.

After downloading the manual for the mill from the Axminster web site I was able to identify the faulty gear. I rang Axminster at 15:30 on Monday afternoon to see if i could get a new gear I ordered one over the phone within 1 hour I had received a email saying my order had been dispached. when I got home from work on Tuesday afternoon the gear was waiting for me. This has to be outstanding customer service.

I have no connection with the company just a very satisfied customer.
