Thread: Don Young's 'Alice'
08/09/2011 23:58:01
Can anyone tell me exactly what scale Don Young's 5 inch gauge Alice is drawn? I don't think it is actually stated on the drawings - possibly because it is't true to scale in every part. That said, I have never studied the drawings.

Thanks
Diane

Look on the bright side... in 2020 this forum will have a thread that says "try and get hold of a 2010 / 2011 MEW .... those were the days!!!"

I'm sure there are one or two but most women don't have time to post on forums, do they? It really is a man's thing isn't it? Haven't seen Julie's name for a while. I expect she's busy.

I was laughing at the "that would be some firms nicely have"... ha ha. Hmmmmm

Can't do anything about the adverts I'm afraid. I will try to find out how they are generated and shift them.

Morning all

David is very unwell indeed and has been in hospital. He asked to be let out so he could sort out the next issue of ME.
I have deleted the first few postings on this thread but thought the title was appropriate.

Regards
Diane

Thread: Bristol Show
22/08/2011 09:27:17
It was my first time there so almost all the models were new to me! I've heard nothing but good reports about the exhibition over the years and I was not disappointed. It was nice to see some machine tools; for me these were some of the best models in the show. It was good to see a cross-section of club stands and that they had opened an extra hall just for Harry Williams. (only joking..... always good to see Harry even if he has gone away with another silver cup and his arm twisted up his back!!). Speaking of arm twisting - tucked away in the corner of the new hall was one of the best exhibitis there - Reuben Smith's wonderful 2in. steam yachts. A joy to behold!

Thread: Don't assume the obvious

I read the title to mean as follows :-
'The Workshop of Model Engineers'
or
'This magazine is about what you can do in your Workshop if you are one of the thriving band of Model Engineers.'

It's as Steve Garnett said - if it's me it'll be right. I never write wrong things. Sometimes I do right wrongs though.

I wonder whether you mean 31.5 years, John?

In general I believe we have very high standards when it comes to the use of English. As you know, I am not a practising model engineer so if something in a manuscript is unclear to me I would have to query it to make sure it isn't a mistake. I would mark it for David to check. I vaguely remember the 'PB' but I seem to recall that in that case I worked it out for myself pretty quickly so therefore decided that if I could understand, then the reader could too. I agree, however, that in such cases it would be best practice to write out in full followed by the abbreviation in the first instance and I it would be my suggestion that we do this in future. (In fact, are you sure that didn't happen in this article?)

As an editor can never read anything without mentally editing it I have to say that there are a lot of publications in the railway and preservation fields with much lower standards than ours. It's a bit cynical to suggest that nothing in print is ever edited these days. All in all I think ME and MEW are pretty good in terms of standards of English.

I requested the digital issue to be made live on Wednesday. This is the procedure - two days notice. As I think you will remember from many previous explanations given, making digital issues live is not within the remit of the editorial staff.
Please note the time of this post. Please note also that I have been at this desk since 07.30am YESTERDAY. Whilst I do not expect for one minute that you will believe me, it has been the same every day this week. Please do not lecture me on devotion to duty!

The digital issue will be available on Monday. It should have been today but due to annual leave it has not been possible. I agree this is not good service. But I repeat - it is NOT the fault of the editorial staff.

Give the girl a break....

Put it down to annual leave in the office - and lack of sleep on the part of those of us not on annual leave.
Hope you don't mind my edit Jason. Can't have David reading that!! I'll be gettng my cards in the post !
