Unlike some, I don't use the word awesome lightly, but some of those constrictions are.

Thread: An engine to watch
23/03/2019 15:45:52

Hi Ian,

New Zealand has another engine that interests me, Richard Pearse built it in 1902 for his flying machine.

Neil,

Here is another link for that engine Norman Hayes Engine It explains what it is made from. I think any engine I make looks more like Norman's than like the museum quality model in my link

If you want a useful tool too, you could make a face plate balancing spindle. Then use it with a long leaver as a rotary table.

Two tools for the price of one.

Thread: Concrete workshop floor paint
21/03/2019 17:13:31

I am building a new workshop and wanted to paint the floor with a water based paint. The modern solvents they use send me funny, like a cross between mainlining coffee and being roasted.

I found most cheaper concrete paints are solvent based and water ones are a lot more expensive.

I found Rest Express sell Ronseal Diamond Hard at a really good price and they deliver quickly, so can recommend them.

The paint itself is great, It covers really well and forms a hard smooth finish.

I chose the Slate grey, in the tin it is a light grey and as it dries turns dark. This is the icing on the cake for me, makes it super easy to get the second coat on without missing bits.

Thread: What is a good quality lathe paint
21/03/2019 17:00:26

I used to live on a canal boat and had a few old tins of green paint spare when I repainted my boat blue, all 60' of it.

My dad used it to repaint his Drummond lathe, it came up perfect. I now have the lathe, and the paint is still good. No problems with oil effecting the paint.

I can totally recommend International Toplac. Also when I did the repaint, I used an additive to improve the flow and reduce brush marks. I think it was Owatrol Oil.

Thread: Recommended base flashing for an external wall

+1 for lead

I dont understand where the sleepers are, are they a path?

Best thing to do is make sure the finished ground level is lower than the floor and bottom of corrugated iron.

To reduce splash and improve drainage put a 12" wide, 2" deep layer of gravel next to the wall.

Thread: Precision division plates

I just found in MEW #52 an article about making a "face geared indexing table". It uses a Hirth coupling. It was cut not using any bevel so only the outer edge makes contact.

In #54 Scribe a line there is further discussion about setting the correct angle to cut teeth that mesh properly.

Thread: Tool Post Milling/Drilling Attachment

I was looking through MEW back issues and saw in #52 and #53 there is a description how to build the Quick Step tool post milling attachment. Might give you a hew ideas.

Have you read the wiki page It describes several methods, one, Colour Case Hardening sounds like it could be your marbled paper effect.

Thread: Workshop insurance
17/03/2019 17:02:12

Thanks for the replies guys, I will try WM and NFU. I live out in the sticks and have a NFU office in the local town. The local farmer says the rep is very helpful.

My own experience of insurance is that it is a racket. Only time I tried to claim on house insurance was for a lost watch they accused me of lying and refused to pay. Needless to say my view is it is a waste of money, but I am not brave enough to not insure.

17/03/2019 10:49:39

I should have said, it is in a standalone building in the garden.

17/03/2019 10:38:30

I know this has been discussed before but that was nearly two years ago.

Who would you recommend for workshop insurance?

I see Walker Midgley Insurance Brokers are on the trade list for Doncaster, they any good?

Thread: Circular lathe mounted file disc
13/03/2019 10:31:25

I wonder if it would be cheaper to have a disc electroplated with CNB?

11/03/2019 14:08:44

That is a shame, they look quite good.

Thread: Drummond enthusiast
11/03/2019 13:59:38

Hello,

I have a B type with a worn bed that i have had some luck scraping and, a worn lead screw that has had the nut filled with white metal. So I can only get about 12" travel on the saddle. Apart from that it runs well.

Have you seen the Drummond Lathe Group on Yahoo?
