Thread: Books
24/12/2011 23:30:59
Can anyone recommend a book or two with small beginner type projects in? I'm more interested in tooling and stationary engines than anything else.

I made a tailstock die holder recently under the eye of a club colleague and I'm dead chuffed with it

I have the workshop practice series lathe one already

"the lathe cannot be fitted with a rear toolpost because of the taper turning attachment being in the way."

Yes same here so a rear toolpost is out. Could be a feed problem then

Its a Smart and Brown A Mk 2

I will have to measure the hole and the machine isn't here.

Now I'm more confused, what are 'machine' and 'chucking' reamers??

Arrgh I have broken more parting off tools in the last couple of weeks than I care to admit. I bought a holder at a local motor fair (yeah I know cheap and chinese) but a colleague milled it for me so it was straight. But the blade in it keep digging in and breaking. Its quite thin only about 3/32", should I get something a bit wider?
Thread: Lathe collets

I finally investigated the spindle of my new lathe to determine what collets it will accept. Firstly it doesn't accept the 2MT centre that the tailstock does so how do I turn between centres?

And how do I determine what collets it takes. Theres nowt in the manual I have for the lathe so if they are manufacturer specific, how do I get some?

I have a couple of hand reamers, but when I visited a colleagues workshop I noticed all his were morse taper reamers to fit in his lathe.

I need to get a couple more and I'd like to stick to one type.

Any difference or is it a case of choice?
Thread: Tapers
24/12/2011 13:34:10
OK next round of silly questions

I want to make some tommy bars for a couple of things. Now as it stands they appear to be tapered so they don't fall out again.

Now how do I go about that? I know you can make a taper with a taper reamer but to what diameter do you drill the pilot hole, presumably the smaller diameter?

And how do I taper the bar, in one case its quite small. Doing it in my lathe seems like a bit of overkill.

Some of those Chester ones look OK
Thread: Why are milling machines so b****y expensive
04/12/2011 11:52:18
Very true gents but the other criteria is that I don't have a lot of room. I've already had to turn a 2nd hand one down (for £200!!) cos it was too big

02/12/2011 21:00:05
OK I'm in the market for a milling machine. I'm a bit strapped for room and cash so it doesn't want to be too big. I guess I'm sniffing around the lower end of the Warco/Sieg/Chester/Clarke sort of range.

Now the lathes in that area were around £300 when I bought an Axminster some time since, that same lathe is now about £350. However equivalent (lower end of the range) mills are in the £600-£900 range. Why is this?

And how good are they? I don't want to shell out 6-700 quid to find I have a machine which will barely handle the job as I did with my mini lathe. Although admittedly it did turn up to around an inch in diameter it didn't have enough travel etc for what I wanted to do.

I was almost decided on a Warco WM14, but note that the price has gone up recently. Grrrrrr.

Anyone got a small but good mill for sale?

Are you the same Harold Hall that wrote the 'Lathework a Complete Course' WPS book?

I'm just working my way through it now, its the die holder in that I was going to make. I've been pretty much advised to buy a blank now though and at around 3 quid its a bit of a no brainer.

I was rather pleased though on doing Chapter 3 (the precision square) to find that my lathe only had a difference of 1 thou over the 4 inches.

You have a website?

Thread: Metal in cooker
01/12/2011 23:29:01
Shiny after over 10 years use so chrome plated what?
01/12/2011 18:54:21
I'm about to sling out an old cooker. But before I do, I'm going to strip it of anything useful. Heres the question...

Are the grill parts and oven shelf parts stainless steel? Ore is there some other heat resistant form of steel. Cos if they are stainless then I am about to recieve a good supply

Yeah I'd ground it too thin I think and then went mad with new machine

Thank you all again, loads to go on there.

OK assuming I buy a couple of blank tapers, how do I hold them in the chuck to drill and ream them out?

Thanks all, as usual loads of good info.

**OK silly question alert**

Whats 'indexable' ?
Thread: Cutting a Morse Taper

Thanks all, useful stuff there.

Now I have the ME Handbook and I've just looked at the page in question. OK I'm not sure on terminology but I'm assuming that the taper per inch is the change in radius over one inch from an axis running the length of the metal?

A bit like a hill is 1 in 3, is then an MT2 taper 0.04995 in 1 (or 1 in approx 20!)

If so then working out the angle via:

tan A = opp/adj

tan a = .04995/1 = .04995

so tan-1 .04995 = 3.177 degrees

Contradicts directly with the figures given here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_taper#Morse which gives a figure of 1° 25' 50"

Unless I am misunderstanding what each measurement is.....

Thread: Tipped Tools
30/11/2011 11:04:08
Its not so much the use of said tools thats the problem, I'm trying to save myself a long laborious job grinding the tools on my small bench grinder.

It only has two wheels like any other and one is a wire wheel and the other is a fairly fine stone which is taking ages and ages to remove metal from HSS.

Yes I know I could change the wheels over each time but thats a big hassle as well for two reasons. One is that I have to dismantle the whole guards set up to get at the nuts at each end of the spindle.

And secondly and far more of a pain is that for some insane reason I can't hold the wheel at the other end so I can do the nut up,  because if I do it undoes the nut at its end (opposite threads???) and I struggle to get either of them done up properly. There doesn't appear to be another way of holding the spindle so I can do the nuts up

I'd like to make a tailstock die holder, but I can't work out how to cut the MT2 rear part.

My lathe does have a compound slide but looking at the data, I would need to set it to 1 degree and so many minutes which is beyond its capability I think.

Anyone point me in the right direction?
