Thread: 1 Tonne Arbor Press suitability for broaching EN1A |
27/03/2016 17:31:00 |
We have a 2 ton arbor press and was broaching a 5mm wide keyway in 16mm bore in mild steel and couldn't do it. Had to put it on the hydraulic press, which recorded 4 ton at one point.

I encountered the black filler like material on the inner sides of the drip tray as well. I removed it from the tray by scraper and a bit of heat. The rear cover I just sanded smooth and repainted, I didn't bother stripping it.

Hi Hywel I stripped mine using Nitromors paint stripper. Given the age of the machine I was concerned that the paint contained lead an didn't want to cover all the workshop and my lungs with the dust. In actual fact the paint came off easily. I painted the inside of the suds tank with a gloss paint, given that it wasn't going to be seen I used a tin of yellow that I had on the shelf. I undid the casting from the base to release the vertical screw rather than the allen keys. The gears and leadscrew on mine were coated in grease, plan to use oil on re assembly.

It sounds to me as though one of the winding in the motor i connected the wrong way round. The end of one winding must be connected to the start of the next and so on. |

I am using craft master paint as I prefer it to stationary engines paint I have painted the cabinet and stripped the tray. There is a lot of filler in the column. I have pulled the machine apart 3 times now for various moves. This time it's getting a full overhaul before it goes back together. It has hard a hard life in a school and looks as though it been painted with a yard brush with battleship gray paint. |

I did exactly the same with my Tom Senior serial no. 178. Worked fine for last 5 years, just started stripping the machine down for a clean and paint. I also need to make a new worm wheel for the power feed as its missing some teeth. I'll take pics of progress. |

Thread: Making a gibstrip, how to? |
10/03/2015 19:14:04 |
I made the gib strip from bronze for the taper turning attachment on my Smart and Brown lathe. The original, which was missing when I bought the lathe, was also made from bronze. It runs on the steel taper turning guide. |
Thread: What did you do today? (2014) |

Mine stays on all the time, I scan all my drawings/manuals and save them to it as pdf and then I can access them from any machine, including the oldest in the garage/workshop.

There has been number of firmware updates for Buffalo, have you applied them?
|
21/12/2014 20:17:51 |
Yes - I am using 10.6 Snow leopard and 10.10 Yosemite with no problem, desktop icon shortcut to the drive and remote access from outside my network. My Buffalo is at least 8 years old.

Thread: Problem with Single Phase Hoover AC Motor |
21/12/2014 18:54:48 |
You can normally hear the centrifugal switch click as the motor slows down. I have cured them temporally by squirting WD40 in there, either through the vents if its a vented motor or by gently separating the cover from the body to insert the WD40 straw. No substitute for stripping and cleaning though.

Hi
It is called Marking Blue, or layout blue. It is essentially Prussian blue mixed with meths. |
