Thread: How much is this lathe worth?

I had something similar long ago, someone kindly described it as a ' rotary file'.

Made as per drawing, bottom 1/4" of expansion link hit by connecting rod , centre line of valve does not line up with centre line of expansion link. Suggest you draw everything out on squared paper using drawing dimensions to see if your drawings have same errors as mine ! Also , worth looking at position of valve gear lever in cab. Forward position very close to boiler sight glass. Lovely locomotive to build, sure you will be happy with result.

Sorry for confusion, my remarks about valve gear dimensions were directed at Clivel's 2-6-4 Jubilee !!

Be careful when it comes to making the valve gear for this locomotive. Check those drawing dimensions carefully before you start.

When the curse of fiat money was introduced into society it was the death knell for those whose ' place' and hence ' reward' was determined by their true contribution to the human race.

Imagine if this present world, with all its technology, was run on a barter system ,where ' engineers' might stand !

As it is , morally, we are well ahead of lawyers, politicians, bankers, insurance agents, clergy, etc.

I'm happy with that.

The most difficult thing, will be to find belts for it !

Thread: Dimensional errors in LBSC Doris drawings
06/12/2014 18:08:22

I'm not sure if the law about burning witches ( heresy ) has been withdrawn so criticism of errors, or design flaws , has to be avoided.

However, I would suggest you carefully go through the dimensions of the drawing relating to clashing of the rotating parts with stationary objects over the full movement ( up and down ) of the axleboxe and complete 360deg rotation of parts.. Connecting rods fouling slide bars or the bottom end of the expansion link . Coupling rods hitting weighshafts , or crossheads !

Valve spindles not lining up with centre of expansion link , also eccentric rod connections well out of line with ' reality '.

On the drawing these will all ' look good', only a careful check placing the drawing dimensions onto squared paper will reveal the 'truth'.

Reading the write up of the day , end to end ,is useful and will include some errors , but not all !

Even if you find no errors , the time will have been well spent.

And when you have made your choice of locomotive to build , try to contact as many previous constructors as possible to establish the drawing errors , before making the pieces !

Have a healthy sceptism of dimensions until you have transposed them yourself onto squared paper and see that the coupling rod will not hit the crosshead, or weighshaft. That the connecting rod won't clash with the expansion link or the eccentric rod not line up with the back-set pin.

Check everything before removing metal !

Thread: Jubilee boiler stays

I am assuming that you have a running Jubilee chassis.

How did you overcome the crosshead clashing with the coupling rod ?

The bottom of the expansion link clashing with the connecting rod ?

The return crank being far too 'out' to avoid a cranked eccentric rod ?

I've triple checked dimensions from the drawings and they do happen !
