This morning I finished the first assembly of my ST beam engine , I coupled up the compressor and was amazed when it worked !!! no piston ring , no gaskets , no seals . I know it should work but when you are a beginner is really satisfying to see an engine that you have built turn for the first time . Lots of work still to do on it but at least I know it will work ! regards Phil |
Thread: silver solder |

hello , well that's confusing then ! I have been using this material for some time for odd jobs , melts with a propane burner . I have quite a lot of of it , must have cost a fortune !!!!!!! , I am having a go at a small traction engine , only a 2 inch dia boiler . I think I will have a test on a bit of the spare boiler tube , regards Phil |

About 20 years ago , when a firm went under, I inherited some silver solder used to join 8 in band saws. Its made by Eutectic Co.Ltd , Its Eutecrod 1801 , says suitable for ferrous and non ferrous metals . My question is , is this suitable for soldering a small boiler ? regards Phil |
Thread: stuart turner 501 boiler |
06/09/2016 20:59:44 |
I would have expected that but the Kennings catalogue lists a check valve as 1/4 X 40 which I am sure doesn't fit the ST boiler |
06/09/2016 19:40:51 |
can anyone please tell me what the size and TPI is on the drain plug of a 501 boiler , The 504 is 5/16x26 but the 501 is smaller , I cant read my thread gauge as there doesn't seem to be enough threads to register on , or my eyesight isn't what it was !!! thanks and regards Phil |

Hello . I would like to fit a check valve to my ST 504 boiler , will it be OK to use the drain plug fitting that at the bottom on the front of the boiler . I don't want to have to make a new hole in it regards Phil |
Thread: sprocket |

I have bowed to superior experience . Bought a 74 t with the right pitch for £8 and put the big one back on ebay Thanks for the messages everyone Phil |
09/06/2016 20:01:51 |
to be honest Duncan most of that is way over my head , except that the dia of the pitch circle of the sprocket will be 8.3784 in , making the circumference of pitch circle 26.24 in . So if I drill 70, 3/8 in holes at a radius of 4.1792(ish) That should be right , needless to say it is a very low speed off road kart for grandson , which is why I need a big sprocket to slow it down , I have an 85 tooth one bit it is too big to fit so I thought I could use that as a blank thanks for help Phil |

hello , I want to have a go at making a sprocket for a go.kart 70 teeth, 3/8 pitch . I am thinking that the layout will be the same as for a 70 T gear , except that I can drill the holes then, turn off the excess and file the tops . I have the use of a mill and rotary table ( but not the experience !!!) regards Phil |

Hello , I am building a Stuart Turner beam engine , I have got to the eccentric Andrew Smith's book says make it off centre by11/64 but the drawing says 9/64. Can anyone tell me which is correct please Regards Phil |
Thread: milling machine selection |

I would be interested in other people's experience , but I was disappointed in my mill/drill . The down feed is not positive . it's not like to up feed on a proper mill . I have a Raglan now and that's much better , the other is a great drill though . regards Phil |

The Lady Stephanie engine runs fine with just a link between the beam and the piston rod , so why bother with a Watt parallel motion ? (which I trying to get right on my ST beam project ) ! regards PHIL

thanks everyone, its in stainless steel and my die is well worn , I wasn't allowing for a bit of an error , just comparing the exact pitches that I could produce , please excuse my beginners ignorance .Yes it is part of a ST beam engine regards Phil |
04/03/2016 13:11:41 |
I have 2 lathes one imperial one metric , I would like to screw cut a 2 BA thread . But the pitch doesn't seem to be either . What am I missing here ? |
Thread: Which lathe? |

hello I have a Colchester bantam and a super 7 , I can do small jobs on the big lathe but not big jobs on the small lathe , Colchester is not that much bigger but much heavier and not difficult to fit a single phase motor to .I would always go for the biggest I could get at an affordable price regards Phil |
