Thread: Lux milling machine

Assuming you are referring to a Chester Lux Milling Machine, mine has 2 or 3 cap head screws fitted to the top of the gearbox which secures a plastic cover for the spindle. Does yours have a cover? is it missing? could the screws have vibrated out and found their way into the keyway?

Not being familiar as to the utilisation of your collets, I assume they have to be MT2. If not ER32's and a screw on collet chuck may be a useful option.

Riser blocks for the column make up for the lack of space between the spindle, tooling, vice and work peice. Don't forget you will need room to insert the draw bar.

Good morning, Mick,

How about this: eBay Spindle

Best regards,

Swarf, Mostly!

Apart from hopefully securing an undamaged spindle the question of the bearing fit remains. Spindle and bearings were precision hand fitted at the factory, this option attempts to accomodate a used spindle from one lathe and bearings from the existing lathe and we must not forget the shim issue. Unless the OP has significant fitting experience and the means of acturately checking the whole spindle could be out of alignment rather than just the MT2 taper.

Bite the bullet £359.50 incl. VAT and apparently Myford have instock. Alignment and fitting second hand parts a potential nightmare.

Register it as a Special Vehicle, you will be issued with a V5 and a number plate. Various dumpers are registered for road use - witness construction sites.

Agricultural Vehicles and Special Vehicles, young drivers age 16. They must have a provisional licence and are only permitted to drive to and from the test site on 'L' ('D' in Wales) Plates. If the vehicle is fitted with a pasenger seat they must be accompanied by a qualified driver If sucesful they may drive agricultural/special vehicles on the road.

Use a trailer, why run the risk of finding out. Reduces wear and tear on the axles and steering of your model. Covered trailer keeps the model dry and road crud free. Watch towing weight as the trailers permitted gross weight must be within the manufacturers stated towing capacity. The same considerrations I suspect apply with an A frame.

If threaded under power could the die or dieholder make contact with the shoulder and then as forward progress is prevented even if momenterrialy partially destroy the thread and reduce the diamenter?

Has something nasty happened to the die? Possibly an optical illusion but the section of cutting thread visible In the picture looks gunged solid to me.

Dave Worse still it looks as though the die is devoid of any thread.

Before anyone says, "Ah but you need two directors for a company!" My company was registered in the Seychelles.

Correction, this is not a requirement.

Does anyone have further suggestions?

With my Chester Lux mill R8 taper, when changing tooling I use my air impact wrench which undoes the draw bar, (not overly tightly secured) and and loosens the taper. Place something to catch the ejected tooling safely - ask me how i know!

PAUL KEMP:Dont forget there are people like me who are not subscribers but regular purchasers of the magazine. The reason is pure laziness but my local newsagent stocks it, I see it everytime I go there and it is just too easy to buy a copy on the spot. There must be many like me or the publishers would not bother with retail sales. Even though I am a non-subscriber I make a lot of use of the forum, buy stuff from forum advertisers and have ,hopefully, contributed some forum articles that people have found useful.

Quite, I have every issue and have replaced a number over the years when the wife has "tidied up". I have always purchased the magazine from a newsagent and latterly enjoyed delivery along with the daily newspapers. The Newsagent covers a significant number of the outlying villages over eight miles from his premises.

Most members have fond memories of past times when virtually every village had a shop and local filling stations were commonplace. Classic car and motorcycle magazines hanker after the "good old days" and then encourage readers to subscribe thereby contributing to the destruction of the local infrastructure.

MCE acted as managing agents and or brokers, not the Insurer so Steviegtr is partially correct in that MCE didn't "go pop". Refunds were made from the FSCS scheme, which is a pool managed to prevent hardship in the event of Insurer failure for example. The pool is funded by levies on insurance policies and the various bodies which comprise the insurance industry.

Nowt for Nowt.

It may be of interest for forum members to note that over the past few years a number of Gibraltar based insurers have gone into liquidation. They receive approval to trans-act business in the UK by virtue of passport arrangement with other member states.
