Thread: Myford super 7 tailstock thread
04/02/2023 19:13:13

Good evening all, those who have a lever feed tailstock with "bits" missing have the ML7 lever feed, the missing "bits" convert it to enable use on the S7.

A photo would probably get better responses

I think it's one of those things you either know or not. It's just a cheese head screw, at a slight inward angle above the gear change shaft. It just appears to close a hole. It's not important, I'm just curious.

It is important if it is used for lubrication, otherwise it wouldn't be there.

CT if the estate is significant I would obtain the valuation in writing, even if zero and hand to the solicitor but keep it with the estate papers. HMRC are increasingly looking at valuations and "missing" estate property and are not noted for their stupidity. I have acted as an Executor on five occassions over the last 50 years and am reasonably up to speed with Protocol.

CT the parts may not be as elusive as you think. There appears to be an owners club - but it has a far wider membership and appeal. Potential buyers would die for a machine as complete as this. Don't you dare scrap it!

If you have a split bearing puller which you can use to encircle the lower pulley that may spread the load over the entire base of your recalcitrent pulley.

Thread: A poor early Christmas present.

I thought I would treat myself to an early Christmas present. So I purchased a 10mm square lathe tool set, and four new Myford tool holders off one of the many sellers on the bay. Fist fault. The tools could not be set at centre height so I milled a millimeter of all the tool. Second fault the tool holders would not fit the genuine Myford tool post.

A case of you get what you pay for. The tool holders are boxed up ready for return to the supplier.

There are earlier postings regarding the incompatability of toolholders for Quick Change Tool Posts and I have first experience of this. The clue is in the name "Myford", their own toolposts and toolholders are compatable, the rest are variable.

Looks like an old one, intended for use on side valve engines, but could function equally well on a pushtod engine.

OHC may not be as easy

Howard

Unlikely to fit in the valve chest, My side valve spring compressor fits in the chest and only compresses the spring. It does not exert any pressure on the valve. It resembles a pair of spring compasses with forks on each arm which are slid on the the coils top and bottom and the screw with butterfly nut tightened to compress the spring. Side Valve cap security methods differ the simplest being a cap with a slot which slides into a groove in the valve, the dished perimeter of the cap bearing on the valve holds everything in place.

As regards OHV and OHC I have already stated it will compress valve springs on any accesible cylinder head rather than every cylinder head.

I have one, purchased as and used for compressing valve springs. Used to remove valves from any cylinder head which will accomodate it. The treaded end engages the valve head and does not require a protective button. Valves are hard, the thread is soft.

Thanks all, good tip re DRO as that is on the shopping list..yes

The one shot lubrication is also a potential issue with DRO as well as reduced travel. Suggest rebuild and observe carefully where everyhing needs to go as you may find location and clearance issues.

Watch out for DRO if you fit one shot oilers, particularly on the rear of the table and allow for a potential reduction in cross travel (column).

What ever you do don’t go anywhere near antique steam. The chap is a well known con man. Better options are eBay 1 day sale, or Facebook marketplace, or just put on Facebook model engineering site. If the price is fair someone will buy it.

I would urge caution or you could be faced with huge legal costs attempting to prove what you say is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
