Thread: Myford S7B Cross Slide Stop |
24/04/2023 17:52:41 |
Thank you Brian. I have DRO mounted and the cross slide has the scale fitted on the underside so very crowded. I know I can count down on the DRO but would prefer a posative stop in order that I can observe the machining process. The great pity of it is the small diameter of the headstock mandrel, the cut off slide would solve all the problems and reduce waste. Robert

Gentlemen A brain picking exercise. I have to make approximately 100 identical components. I have a form tool to create the external profile and have arranged the tooling for the tailstock turret to machine the internal features. Regrettably the material diameter is too large to pass through the headstock and prevents the use off my cut off slide as I will be chasing the material toward the headstock repositioning the cross slide and tailstock each time. I therefore need to create a positive stop for the cross slide to ensure consistent daimeter. I have a copy of the design published in MEW (a reprint from ME?) but this will not work due to the need to reposition the stop after each component with resultant lack of repeatability without resetting.. Has anyone of the learned Forum members solved this problem and prepared to share any information please. Thank you all in anticipation. Robert Butler spelling

Dear all, I want to attempt to case harden a mild steel screwdriver I have made. Any advice on what I should use as a case hardening mixture? I have already ground up charcoal briquettes in to a powder. I've not found any consistent recommendations if any extra additives eg. salt presumably for the sodium After youtube research, I plan to:
Sound ok? Thank you in advance. Who on earth would suggest making a screwdriver from mild steel and then case harden it? Robert Butler |

Adequate suggestions have been forthcoming, your call. You must remember to lock the saddle if using the top slide as proposed. Dowels wear as do their respective holes therefore of dubious benefit, not to mention increased production costs. Robert Butler |

Neil it is possible to purchase coving without the 90 degree angle. It is flat on the inside and moulded on the customer facing side the two edges butting up to the ceiling. Google is your friend, but i can't work out how to paste the link.PM me if you wish. Robert Butler |

I occasionally spot the odd error that creeps into MEW articles but I control the pedant in me and refrain from commenting mainly because I don't think it would be fair on the author. The article on page 55 of MEW 325 seems wrong on so many aspects but this time I don't feel guilty about commenting on it as the author is not identified. Initially I presumed it was an advert for the product but if it was I would have expected to see the manufacturer or suppliers details as the end of the text. If it was an article submitted by a contributor to MEW the authors name (and often a picture) usually appears on the first page of the article. Whilst the MEW index has a sensible title for the article the text article text itself begins as if its about 'improvised tailstocks'. It's not a big boo boo but I'm surprised it slipped through. Whilst the author does give any more details than the supplier being called LINN Tools and being findable with an online search, its not going to help readers (especially non UK) who do not have internet access. The pictures in the article look to have come out of the 'could do better' category in the current 'Workshop Photography' article currently running in MEW. They are very poorly lit and do not even show details that are 'illustrated in photo 3'. If I was considering purchasing the LINN DRO (or any digital caliper type device) is whether the reading is retained if the caliper blanks the display, whether it is by manual or auto power off. Am I being to critical? Ian P Possibly see above. Robert Butler |
Thread: Making new tappet adjusters. |

The tappet adjusters (basically a threaded rod and adjusting nut) need replacing. I have sourced some long, high tensile, 1/4" UNF grub screws and grade 5 nuts. The grub screws have a hex slot rather than a screwdriver slot which is easier when it comes to adjustment. It is the other end of the grub screw that presents a small problem. I need to make them hemispherical to fit into the top of the push rod.. I don't have a ball turning device and apart from the use of warding files, I don't have a good idea of how to do the job! I am sure I am missing a trick here or overthinking the solution, so any suggestions? Otherwise it will be files and Mk 1 eyeball. Andrew. Try A series tappet adjusting screws Robert Butler |

MT tooling may require a metric or imperial drawbar, I certainly would not wish to tilt the head to swap over as realignment is a time consuring pain. Robert Butler |

With most stand mounted machines (or in deed bench mounted) you will run out of headroom for the draw bar. Robert Butler |

Picture above of the saddle stop on my Super7 regards Martin This saddle stop shown is of the type that attaches to the saddle and the bed just under the headstock utilising existing tappings and available from new Myford. The original Myford device fits to the rear of the bed using pre tapped holes for this purpose and for the Myford taper turning attachment. The Hemmingway device fits to the front of the bed.
