If he wasn't told that he would probably have been sent to stores for a long wait, striped paint left handed screwdriver etc.

Thread: Rounding the ends of pullrods

Thanks for all the replies. I might try the hanging in a vice option that sounds quick to set up then maybe the plate with pins on the linnisher.

Cheers

Hi

On the loco I am building there are a lot of pull rods and cranks for the brake gear that need rounded ends. There are lots of different sized rods with different radius and hole sizes. Don Young says grip it with mole grips and radius with an endmill over a mandrel. I don't really like the sound of that. I have thought of making a plate with a peg and rotating them against a linnisher. Has anyone got any thoughts or good ideas, jigs, etc that will help to do this quickly and accurately.

Thanks

Thread: Scale Field Gun or Howitzer plans

Peter

there is a book called Early British quick firing artillery By Len Trawin. This has very detailed drawings of guns carriages and all the gubbins that go with them. They are not working drawings that you can build from they are just detailed cut aways, sections some technical drawings and explanations of all the parts. It might also be worth contacting the tank museum in bovington. They have a lot of technical drawings of tanks and might also have artillery. The imperial war museum also has a lot of handbooks for artillery and these often contain three view drawings to scale. I can give you some good drawings of the BL 15 inch howitzer but again you would have to use these to make you own plans.

Thread: Lifting A Tom Senior Light Vertical
19/10/2019 19:04:55

I have moved my Tom senior four times now and I have always taken the table and knee off a lifted the main coloumn off the base. I lifted it with a light alloy scaffold pole through the top holes. Two strongish blokes can lift the coloumn and I have always built a breeze block staircase next to the machine. This way we can lift it in short stages and have a rest as it is very heavy. I have also moved it on my own intact many times by crow barming it up onto broom handles then it rolls very easily.

Thread: Telescopic bore gauges
16/10/2019 10:00:56

Clive

If you put the spring loaded bars vertical but hold the handle up about 20 degrees then snug up the lock. The bars are lightly clamped too big for the bore then push the handle down to about -20 and take it out. They have then been squashed down to the bore size and wont be disturbed whilst withdrawing from the bore. I get good measurements like this with no skill needed.

16/10/2019 08:04:23

What do people mean when they are saying things like "practice to get the feel of them". I must be using them wrong. How are you actually using these telescoping gauges then. I have a cheap set in the blue plastic and have never had any problem with them whatsoever. I hold it in the bore with the handle pointing up about 20 degrees tighten it slightly so it's too big then push the handle down to about -20 degrees and take it out. What is the correct technique? Thanks.

Hollowpoint

I was looking after my 14 year old nephew and I was breaking some concrete with a hammer. He asked if he could help so i gave him the hammer and the only thing he hit was the back of his head. A very nasty wound so your dead right.

Thread: Just bought an ML7, what should i do first?
07/09/2019 20:14:44

Shaun

I don't know what your budget is but if you can afford it I would scrap this lathe and get something in better condition. This damage should not happen to a well looked after machine. Not all ML7s have damaged backgear, my two never did. Parts will be quite expensive and good used ML7s can be seen regularly on ebay that will come with no damage and lots of tooling. This would probably work out as beater value in the end.

Good luck

Thread: Chosing a drill grinding attachment or machine
02/09/2019 16:13:21

Why is it that all the drill grinding jigs I see have the drill pointing up? This seems to need a fairly high grinder and a tall jig. Why cant the jigs be mounted horizontally and use the bottom of the wheel?

Only asking as I am thinking of turning a tripet grinder like the one below into a tool and drill grinder and I have never used a drill grinding jig before.

Thanks

A mill cant make a mill because how do you make the spindles and circular bits with a mill?

Yes it can, use your imagination! smile

A horizontal mill can be used to turn short, large diameter parts that would otherwise be too large. See here:

Andrew

I had seen something like that in ME but I'd like to see you make a leadscrew on a mill dont know

05/07/2019 18:36:35

Surely a lathe could make a lathe if you don't include making the bed as that could be cast then scraped.

A mill cant make a mill because how do you make the spindles and circular bits with a mill?
