Thread: CE mark for boilers
14/03/2010 17:17:51
I am planning to make the boiler for a 5inch Speedy loco. How does not having a CE mark affect the running of such a boiler ? and are there known plans to make non CE marked boilers (or any other part) un insurable etc ?
Thread: Rail gauge tolerance
12/03/2010 19:42:31
Wow,  that is technical,  and not sure I understand it.  It states 5" as the minimum width between rails,  and increasing on bends.  I could not read into that what the maximum could be, for straight or curves.
12/03/2010 12:12:49
What are the standard tolerances for the distance between rails for 5 inch track ?
Thread: myford boxford or colchester
10/03/2010 20:03:57
Its a matter of taste - If you are only using the late for hobby work,  I would select the lathe that came with the most diverse set of attachments, selection of chucks, I have been lucky enough to have both small and large 3 and 4 jaw chucks, several faceplates, catchplates, steadies etc.  Why? because Boxford was chosen by so many schools and colleges,  and when they chucked them all out to go hi tech and plastic bending,  the market was awash with them.  Incidentally,  I started off with a worn out Southbend - the Boxford was made on the same geometry, so was able to keep some of the SB attachments.  If you intend doing a bit of milling in the lathe, look for a cross slide with 'T' slots.  At a pinch, you can modify a Myford cross slide to fit a Boxford, you need a new fat gib strip, then bore holes for the cross slide nut and topslide.  Also a cross slide with 'T' slots allows you to buy/make a rear toolpost - good for parting off.

As I said - look for attachments - they are expensive to buy later.

Could also try Skegness springs - google them.  Which part of the spring is broken - if it is the eye at the end, just soften the end of the spring in a flame up to red heat for a minute or so, re-form it and leave it soft if you like
Thread: Propane torch
10/03/2010 19:42:24
Using two torches, do you find that the larger torch starves the smaller torch of oxygen, like when you work inside the firebox ?
09/03/2010 20:17:47
Any advice out there.  Many years ago,  I made a boiler using Easy flo 2, and a large Bullfinch contractors torch with propane. The material was stainless steel, and prone to scale build up as the flux overheated.  I am now (45 years later) about to start another boiler - this time in copper, same torch,  but may be using Easy Flo 55 which requires 630 - 660 degrees - that's another 40 degrees more heat.

Do any of you use air propane for that extra bit,  and can you tell me the manufacturer name / supplier .
Thread: Bandsaw speed control
08/03/2010 13:22:47
Thanks for the comments - seems like extra shafts and pulleys would be the way forward.  I don't have space for another machine in the shed,  and I don't think my wife would appreciate a bandsaw in the lounge, so Thanks Jeff, but no-thanks.

I have a Dewalt wood bandsaw which saws at 330 meters/min, and would like to slow it down to about 30m/min for use with a metal cutting blade.

The motor runs at 2830 rpm (230v 3.4amp or 0.56kw)  Commercial speed reducers are very expensive.  Has anyone got plans for a home made electronic speed controller?

There isn't much room to put additional pulley stages onto the saw, or alter the existing pulley arrangements.
Thread: Boxford AUD Belt Renewal
07/03/2010 18:42:50
Hi,  I have used a link belt on my Boxford for at least 10 years - without problems.  Its a bit of a sweat making the 'dry rivet joint' but I do mine with a couple of small screwdrivers as mini tyre levers to ease the link over the rivet heads.
Thread: why cant you silver solder in the workshop?
05/03/2010 12:48:13
As Mr Percival, it could be the cadmium effect.  I have had problems with all my electricity cable clips softening and the cables then drooped like spagetti.  Now I have another problem.  I installed a suspended automatic fire extinguisher as the workshop is an insulated wooden structure,  now I am scared that I might set it off by accident,  either by the heat of the brazing hearth,  or by accident clouting it with a piece of wood stored in the 'loft'.
Thread: General club questions
05/03/2010 12:40:42
Does anyone know of a site of French clubs who have a 5 inch gauge track - or private individuals with same ?  (127 mm - 5 inch).
I live in the South West between Limoges in the north and Toulouse in the south.  Nearest town is Figeac.
Thread: 5 inch gauge in France

Thanks for the info - I guess I should have put this question under CLUBS.  Anyway thanks for the replies.  Those clubs are about 400 miles North of me,  so still looking.

Thread: ED Racer 'times two'

What a super engine - I had one when I was 14, comp special and Hunter 3.5 - Oh yes and an Ed Bee which was converted by ED at Molsey to be water cooled.  Allways wanted a Taplin Twin - 2 x ED Hunter cylinders.

Good luck
Thread: Which Loco to Build
27/02/2010 08:24:14
Thanks for the info - will have a look there.
26/02/2010 17:00:05
40 years ago,  I started to build Martin Evans's 5 inch 2-6-2 GWR 'Firefly' Tank loco class 4500.  Its part built with experimental stainless steel boiler (any offers ?) - BUT it is going to be too large and heavy for me to complete and then manage.

I am looking to build a smaller 5 inch 0-6-0,  and wonder which engine to build.

Is there a composite reference showing many models where the plans and castings etc are still available.

I am a member of the Steam Boat Association GB who printed a wonderful book of members boats and engines (now available on CD) which helped one to decide which boat to build - anything similar for locos ?

Could you use copper instead - its a bit more malleable.
