How about a ride on mower Hydrostatic gearbox/back axle. Many of these have a pin that you pull out to disengage the integral pump for the "motor". The speed range is infinite from zero to max.

Probably free to a good home from a garden mower mechanic.

When neutral is selected, it becomes a parking brake, so its a very practical unit. I bought a complete Ride-on the other month for less than £200, that included atwin cylinder motor with integral alternator. When I am moving logs around, I can tow a 1/2 ton trailer around with it ; No problem.

That is a tight diameter. We used to use CEROBEND which is a low melting point metal to fill the tubes prior to bending. For larger tubes 1" and upwards we used a hard RESIN similar to this.

I don't know how, but your tubes need to be annealed - but you know this.

Yesterday it was 37deg C and the other day it was hovering around 40. I installed a reversible heat pump last year, it will warm in winter when its -12C outside and cool in summer when its 40+. It consumes half the energy as the wife's oven (Heat pump 4-5 amps @ 240v Oven 11 amps) so to be green, one has to decide on cakes and roast beef or being warmed or cooled. We live in a small house 2 up & 2 down and the system cools all of down stairs and 1 bedroom. The house has 800mm thick stone walls and the roof has 2 sheets of multilayer insulating foil backed with 4" thick rock wool. Heating is generally by a 15Kw log stove burning scrub oak logs which we are told is "green energy" and the heat pump only used each end of the season or during very cold evenings - perhaps for a couple of hours 40 days a year. I doubt that it is necessary to use the air con more than a similar amount of time. During this heat wave, reflective insulation is placed against the DG windows.

By installing the system myself (the tube connections and gassing done by the supply company), I saved over £3,500 on a full supply and install.

Overall, I consider the total system greener than a full electric or gas system.

Steve, I have a 3 phase installation, just like you. You just need to use the same phase + neutral for the extender as the router uses.

Slightly off topic, but my Renault rear windscreen wiper works sometimes. When it works, you hear the relay clicking away. Asked Renault to replace the relay - NO, you have to buy the whole fuse board with relays attached. I casually said are the soldered into the fuse board - no, just plugged in, but to get to them you have to remove most of the plastic dash board, remove the fuse board which then looses all the info that the CANBUS system stores.

Should be great for turning up some small BA threads, just don't drop them in the swarf tray.

Can't see a problem. I have a long rubber reinforced hose about 3/8" internal diameter - probably 15m . No problem for small spray gun, tyre inflation, etc.

I would advise flex plastic airline pipe inside flexible plastic conduit. No need to sink it really deep in the lawn. To make the "trench", sink a spade into the lawn in line with the tube, wobble spade back and forth to make the trench and sink it about 4" deep, perhaps a 18" deep when crossing flower bed.

You can use them to increase the carbon content of mild steel thus making the contact area hardenable - but you also get surface "erosion".

Andre - do you want a list of all scrap metal dealers, or ones near to where you live ? We have a very good good one here in the LOT - steel, stainless steel, Aluminium and scrap iron components but I havn't seen much bronze or copper except tube and water fittings.

If I am going to use bar stock and part off the turned piece, I tighten all 3 jaws and there is usually some movement on each position - so something moves!

I have a Warco mill/drill. To change from the top speed range to the lowest there is a need to remove the motor to intermediate belt and the intermediate to quill pulley belt. The motor /intermediate is made easier by slackening off the motor tension screw allowing that belt to go slack. However, the other belt is a right pig as you have to slacken off a couple of bearing hub bolts, swing the intermediate pulley arm which slackens the belt.

Consequently, I use a small tyre lever to prise the belt off of the large pulley (Whichever that may be). To be on the safe side, isolate the machine first, as it is all to easy to have an accident!

Because it is such a pain in the posterior, I added 2 extra pulleys to the motor and intermediates. This gives me the full range of speeds without having to remove any belts, just move them up and down. I did have to modify the belt cover some what, but it still protects the operator.

It just shows the power of flashing adverts as per the ones on the Top right hand side of the home page !!

If it is, be very careful of the swarf, don't cut yourself, don't get little shards prick you, don't inhale hot vapours from turnings (I was told).

Nick, similar problem in 1976. We could not get a mini computer to RJE to a remote IBM site using modems. BT sent various technicians without success. One hot summers day another tech arrived, in shorts, sandals and long dreadlocked hair. (Some hope we thought) within a few minutes, he got his old and cracked screen AVO out of his bag, then proceeded to cut the earth wire from the modem and Bingo, the RJE link and modem connected! Our factory earth was reading +40 volts and we were an electronic equipment manufacturer !!
