Basyle

They are used in offset litho printing they are stretched round a cylinder and transfer the image from a plano plate which reads right way round onto the rubber blanket which then reads wrong way round and then its transferred onto the paper board.

this arrangement is very common in printing processes today as it keeps the abrasive paper from the plate thus allowing longer print runs before plate changing > circa 500,000 impressions should be available.

these blankets are circa £100 each and may last from a minute to a month perhaps...they easily damaged for printing purposes.

these are off a KBA press and are really just thrown away after use as I say there is a pile of a 100 waiting to be skipped.

Paypal gift means that I get all the amount rather than paying fees as i have just charged the my hermes price rounded up to the full pound it may be called sending money to family and friends..If you want buyer protection make the amount larger so I get the postage amount

its 1000mm x 750 mm x 2mm thick

My hermes can deliver 1 for £4 2 for £6 or 4 sheets for £8

If you want any send me payment by paypal to ianpark1 at aol dot com by gift please and very important let me have your address in the paypal advice box

it does have an image left on the blanket which will come off completely with MEK ( methyl ethyl ketone ) or with white spirit

I'm away for a few weeks but on my return I hope to do a similar scheme involving rubber sheeting if anyone wants some

I can get any amount of used printers blankets which are a very high quality rubber sheet with a cloth backing alltogether about 3mm thick and perhaps 1000mm x 700 mm

Its useful for many purposes

Thread: Adding a brake to a clutched roundhead colchester lathe
10/09/2014 09:19:46

Clive

I'm not sure that its worthy of an article mainly because every lathe other than a round head colchester will be different.

I posted this just to show other owners of clutched colchesters that a brake was possible with the small amount of room available

The brake caliper is very powerfull and just needs a small amount of pressure to stop the spindle very quickly

I suppose a pedal bike with a large chap on it at 30 mph has large amounts of energy to shed with 2 small discs so a lathe spindle is easy for it

I recently sold my old colchester roundhead student which started the motor directly when lifting the starting lever and upon dropping the lever it switched off the motor and allowed the spindle to coast to a stop however if you wanted it to stop quicker you could press down on the lever it applied a brake..very usefull if you are in a rush when a large 4 jaw chuck is mounted with a large lump of steel in it.

My new lathe came fitted witha matrix clutch which is great...only starting the motor once a session...but no brake with a clutch model..

So I bought a secondhand bicycle disc brake caliper made a disc out of stainless plate 2.5mm thick mounted that to a carrier and grub screwed with dogged screws onto the lathe spindle...mounted the caliper onto 2 studs tapped into the gearbox casting and it works great.

I was going to use a cable to remotely operate the caliper but after mounting I tried it out with just a bolt in the actuating arm and thought ..just a hole in the panel with a knob on the shaft and it'll do

I hope the pictures are self explanatory

Thread: Installing a new lathe
02/09/2014 06:38:26

I recently bought a newer colchester student to replace a well worn one that I had in my celler workshops.

The floor in mine is just flags laid straight onto the ground ( 1860 )

The lathe sits on pads of 30mm hard rubber about 200mm square at each corner levelling point.

How are you going to get that big lathe downstairs?

On mine I had to strip down to base, bed, and headstock and between 3 strong mates and I were able to carry it upstairs ( 625 kg) and then the new one downstairs

Thread: Cutting granite worktops
01/09/2014 13:41:06

If I was to obtain some old granite kitchen worktops how would I cut them to my sizes to cover my worktops in my workshop?

Is there any tool that will make it easy?

I have most types of saws, a stihl saw, wet tile saw table,

has anyone done it?
