Thread: You know its time to take a break when.....

You fall seven feet off a ladder and then 3 hours twiddling your thumbs in A&E only to be told you're okay.

Friday afternoon, only one doctor on duty in our local A&E, at least we still have one.

How about just peace and quiet, with the birds singing outside, no wife or kids, no neighbours, no tv or radio on, the mind rests and wanders.

Was that a penguin whistling! do penguin's whistle?

John the engines were under a flip lid, so we needed a reminder.

My regal was a better than my triton in the snow and I could scare the pants of the girl friend by going round corners on two wheels, ( didn't last long).

Hit by a drunk reversing out of a pub it disintegrated like a WW2 movie, bits of body work flying past the windscreen needless to say it was back on the road with a new front end in three weeks, I finally got rid of it because a tank beckoned. Those were the days

My 3 jaw chuck has problems, all three jaws have decided to work independently, I've got ACAS working on them to come to some sort of collective agreement so they will all work together.

My answer is to create as much 'chaff' as possible, you'll find that I'm a follower of the Union of Conscientiously Work-Shy Elements and only drink on every other odd day, while working is a no no and bank accounts!!! my uncle in Botswana deals with them.

As for spying I have been a spy and spied on since a kid and have every I spy book that has come out, my favourite is I Spy a Skeleton, I actually look in my cupboards every night before bed.

My advise is to get yourself a bit of Moldavite **LINK**

John

I have a Dell laptop that runs Linux, but it is still quite a way behind windows for ease of use. What has become a huge problem is the domination of the web  by companies like Google.

Here are a few of google's web addresses

Some online host file list's over 350, you can use a host file block these in IE but you'll stop loads of webpages working properly, you'll also find that google has its fingers well and truly into Linux as their android operating system is Linux based, even the Raspberry Pi!

I can sympathize with you, Windows 10 is I think an attempt by Microsoft to catch up with Google's world dominating, or getting that way, android operating system.

I have a 18 month old HP Envy which doesn't like Windows 10's constant upgrading of system files, my touch screen suddenly had reduced 'touches', my finger print security stopped working, and the light for telling me if my wireless connection was on or off suddenly gave up the ghost.

Fixing it entailed stopping windows automatically updating system drivers, then deleting the Microsoft drivers and reinstalling HP's drivers which was a pain.

Logging on can be a pain but you can get windows 10 to start up without having to input your password every time you start the computer.

There is loads of help on the net.

Muzzer

You could ride a British bike to far off lands and break down and the local engineering shop would fix it for you at little cost, fast forward to our local town carpark where I sat and watched a BMW motorcyclist trying to start his new state of the art expensive motorbike, no go so he called a well know rescue company who I must say were quick on arriving. After a few checks they started to dismantle the throttle and then proceeded to wrap the dismantled throttle in a plastic bag! the bike was then loaded onto a trailer and headed off to the nearest BMW bike dealer, 93miles away.

Today there are many people crossing the boundary from mechanical controlled systems to electronic controlled systems and no doubt like modern motorcycles the future technological minded engineering souls will sit in the special futuristic 'shed' designing their model with the newest and costliest lathe and an equally expensive computer. Perhaps in 2035 they'll even end up queuing like they do today for Apple's mobile phones for the latest 2035 myford lathe.

Ask Neil about modern living room astronomy, remote controlled, sometimes from afar, standing about out in the cold never.

We have lived through an amazing era of human development, but as one young man employed by us  for the summer said" I've never used a spanner before" but he was very deft at using his IPhone.

Model engineering is developing fast but there should still be an emphasis on hand on skills, once lost, like the dodo, they will never return.

My brother inlaw who lived next door, was rebuilding the engine of his BSA A7 in his parents attic. One Saturday afternoon he appeared at our front door in pure panic, " come quick I've had an accident"

Up the stairs into the attic and 'cor blimey' he was cleaning parts of the engine in a plastic basin which had been half full of black oily petrol, had been because he had knocked it off the small bench/table emptying the contents onto the floor where it had quickly drained away.

While he was trying to wipe the floor I went back down the stairs and into the bedroom below, a glance at the ceiling and the every increasing black brown stain told me that I didn't want to be around when his parents returned. "Er Bob I'll nip back home and see if there are any rags to help mop it up.

Just as I got to the my front door who comes walking up the road! Bob's parents.

He never told me what they said but he eventually rebuild the bike, but nowhere near his parents house..

As the years go by Myford lathes are now becoming historically interesting machines, so I thought his link would point you in the right direction for restoring your lathe.

Our local 'men's shed' have just been donated a lathe, an old lathe made in the late 1800's so the donor says, haven't seen it yet but I've been told it's been converted to electric drive.
