Thread: The diesel controversy

I like it 'Anything the alters the cars / vans Emissions, Brakes, Suspension, Steering etc etc must be approved.'

I wish they would tell that to the authorities that look after our roads or are potholes now approved.

Thread: Rusty lathe for sale

£117 and rising!

You could always bid on a Ajax Horizontal milling machine, only a bit rusty but at 0.99p it's a snip.

I went to see a Coronet Lathe 'general' purchased by a retiring engineer, sadly he had serious heart problem soon after purchasing it and never used it. He had though covered it with old carpets in a big brick garage with a tin roof.

On removing the carpets we were greeted by the lathe with all it attachments coated like the lathe in the link with a flayer of rust that was thick enough to sink your finger in, everything had this layer on it. I can't imagine how he felt. I made a few excuses and help cover it back up. Don't know what happened to it but what a pity.

Yesterday we were given a spectacular display of slow flying by one of the RAF's Atlas, 1500ft or there about above the loch what was amazing was the angle, displaying is bottom to the village in all its glory.

Last week it was two F15's slow flying, looked as if they were sight seeing over Ben Nevis.

Philip Stevens website gives an idea of what these young men and women can get up to when let loose with an expensive machine.

I still have attached to my key ring the army issued tin opener, same as Danny M2Z's, from the early 70's. In the house though we have worked our way through a multitude of different ones, from powered to the current hand turned one.

Thread: Washing Work Clothes
24/02/2017 23:21:38

One of the REME mechanics that I knocked about with, we were motorbike mad, in Berlin used to go to the American px where they had huge washing machines, buy a box of omo and wash everything together, everything! jeans, shirts, underwear, socks, army uniform and overalls and towels, have you ever seen a mechanics overalls that has worked in the bowels of a chieftan tank? not a pretty sight.

Then everything into a huge tumble drier, it always made a good night out sitting chatting to American servicemen and women in their bar.

His clean clothes had an overall dark greyish tinge and a hint of diesel. We never waited to see what the next user thought of their wash.

I wear overalls in the 'shed' and wash them when the missus isn't at home and must admit that a masonry nail can cause havoc with the internals, thank goodness for service contracts.

Thread: Motorcycle General Discussion

Once took seven people to the local disco in my reliant van my brother reckoned I was trying to gas them all???

It was also pretty good in the snow as long as the snow didn't build up next to the front wheel which then stopped you turning, found that out going under the railway bridge at Crianlarich with a crunch, going across Rannoch moor in a blizzard showed up more faults as the snow came in around the door windows and little brother sitting next to me looking like a snow man asleep. Sleeping on the corrugated box section floor in the back was painful even with a mat on it and we used to cook inside on a petrol stove, fumes!!! with the built in air conditioning no chance, the handbrake failed (my story anyway) when we were half way up a mountain and we sat and watched the red van slowly trundle off down the track and into a ditch where it remained resting until our return in the evening and found it none the worse for it's private unaccompanied outing. Why was it red? so I could find it in the car park.

Now if you wanted a real go anywhere van the Renault 4 was the bees and knees, even had a hatch where my fag smoking brother could stand up and have a puff while we were driving off on one of our adventures, thinking back it might have been made like that so you could carry long bits of wood , sold it for spares and got twice what I paid for it.

The bike I enjoyed most though was a Yamaha XJ650 Turbo, not as fast as the other turbo bikes around at the time but it would sit at 100mph all day two up with camping gear on the way to Italy, the first set of tyres lasted 1200 miles and I drove it all year round up here in the Highlands it was surprisingly good in the snow.

3rd gear and a fistful of throttle was mind numbing fast especially along naughty single track roads!

Thread: fires in NSW
12/02/2017 21:00:05

I watched a programme the other day in which the guy was, I think, trying to convince the outback farmers that global warming was happening, it sounded like they don't really believe it is, with one farmer letting his flock of sheep out onto the last grass, 14000 acres, he had on his huge farm!

The thought then occurred to me that before Europeans settled there and carved the country up into these massive farms with massive sheep flocks the Aborigines had lived there for a long long time in harmony with their surroundings and hadn't denuded the scant grass lands, so while the warming of our climate is happening it does look like that some of us 'more intelligent' humans are responsible for some of the damage done to the planet.

It reminds me of the houses built outside Glasgow on one of the Clyde's flood plains, when flooded up to the window sill the planners commented " well it hadn't flooded here for the last eighty years.

Perhaps Australia has had huge fires in the past, before the white man arrived though.

Take care guys.

Thread: araldite.
03/02/2017 23:10:00

What's the largest object that you've seen repaired with araldite? REME guys repaired the cracked radiator fan  housing on my chieftain tank back in the early 1970's with araldite reinforced with steel rods.

Julian

An engineer who was unemployed for a long time decided to open a medical clinic. He puts a sign outside the clinic: "A cure for your ailment guaranteed at $500; we'll pay you $1,000 if we fail." A Doctor thinks this is a good opportunity to earn $1,000 and goes to his clinic. Doctor: "I have lost my sense of taste." Engineer: "Nurse, please bring the medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Doctor: "This is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500." The Doctor gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days later to recover his money. Doctor: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything." Engineer: "Nurse, please bring the medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Doctor: "But that is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500." The Doctor leaves angrily and comes back after several days, more determined than ever to make his money back. Doctor: "My eyesight has become weak." Engineer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for this. Take this $1,000," passing the doctor a $500 note. Doctor: "But this is $500..." Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your vision back! That will be $500."

Are you that doctor?

Thread: A Triumph for BSA

The tiger cub was a updated version of Triumph's 150cc Terrier.

The last Tiger cubs had BSA Bantam frames, there were badge as Triumphs.

My Tiger cub took me along many a green road, the length of the Icknield way in he days when it was so quiet that seeing others alone it was unusual, sat on it in the middle of Stonehenge eating my lunch, camped on Maiden Castle for a weekend, gained a bronze medal in the ACU 24hr road trial ending in Belle Vue Manchester. road it around most of England,South Wales, Scotland and sold it when I joined the Army.Great bike and in many ways more enjoyable than many of the large Japanese bikes I have ridden since.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
