Thread: passenger car wheels
11/01/2013 11:31:26

Sorry for causing confusion. I have the material to hand to make steel tyred wheels with aluminium hubs on steel axles. The warings about it coming loose sound feasible, so I will rethink.

Thanks

Joey

Is it feasible to make passenger car tyres from thick tube and alloy wheels within?

Thread: Beginners first simple clock kit / plans
22/11/2012 10:55:31

Why do all clock articles assume so much prior knowledge. I'd love to see a short series that actually went through 'clock theory' explaining things like how the gears work. It seems to me that you use and almost 'random' choice of cutter and rely on depthing to make poorly matched gears work with each other. Can any clock buff put their head above the parapet and explain for a bear of very little brain?

Thread: Model Engineers Boiler Test Code

Hi Tony,

Is there a simple plain english guide or flow-chart that explains how to go about making your own boiler in such a way that at the end of the process it can be insured.?

Thread: Self adulation
22/10/2012 17:05:47

Why does this thread remind me of the Buster characters Ivor Lott and Tony Broke?

At least nobody here is TYPING ALL IN CAPITALS!!!!

One author says "I didn't demand perfect spelling or absolutely accurate grammar. All I argued for was reasonably well spelled postings with punctuation - using full stops and commas in approximately the right places to make for easy reading and understanding. Not a lot to ask."

Just as well , I see he can pop in the odd typo - as can just about everyone else in this fearsome thread.

(Who never makes a spelling mistake, has perfect grammar and faultless elocution; it's such a shame you are all denied the pleasure of hearing me speak).

Thread: Silver solder problems
17/10/2012 13:37:45

It can't be that bad that at worst you could drill out any rivets/screws used to jig it together and melt the whole bloody thing back to its component parts.

Where have you got the porous joints?

Thread: Casting defect in cylinder wall
17/10/2012 13:34:26

HI Sarah,

In practice a blowhole that size, if a blind hole, will have no huge effect on performance aside from damaging piston packing . If you use a single o-ring, which is very narrow, there is also the chance of momentary blow-by wasting a little steam.

I assume your piston is already a decent fit. If so, you don't wnat to change the bore and have to make a new piston. there is no great stress or mechanical function to this repair - just plugging a potential leak and making teh wall smooth so it doesn't damage cylinder packing.

I would not use a liquid product, but fill the hole with a small blob of Isopon P38 body filler, slightl;y proud (mix a larger amount to ensure you get a good even mixture of resin and hardener). Allow it to partially cure, but before it is rock hard use a straight, sharp edge (the corner of the shank of an HSS tool would do) to scrape the filler level with the cylinder wall without removing any metal. The ease of working P38 is why I suggest thios 'cosmetic' material rather than the more structural JB Weld.

Once hard you can, if you like, ligthly go over the patch with a light abrasive, but beware of damaging the cylinder wall.

How terribly inefficient! Hexagonal close packing and the application of entropy result in the lowest possible energy state for the workshop.

It looks like part of the carriage can pass in front of the tailstock to give more travel, but still very limited.

My vote is for an individual's take on the 'ideal' lathe based on their own idea's rather than theory.

Thread: Announcement from Arc Euro Trade Ltd.
24/09/2012 14:47:42

I think it depends apon the business model.

I did describe how I thought various suppliers approach their markets, but i think it was unfair to do so, so I deleted it.

Suffice to say, I think there are lots of strategies to stock type, pricing, IT, staff levels and training, customer support etc. so many different approaches to shows.

Personally what I notice is the difference between the welcome when you visit/phone the suppliers:

Polly - show you round even though they are in the middle of relocation

Arc - Ketan demonstrates the latest bit of kit and seems as excited by it as you are.

Rotagrip - delight in showing you round even though it's clear your in the market for HSS toolbits not industrail milling machines

Warco - Roger Warren sends you a spare part for a machine he din't even sell you (I heard later it was his last one too).

Chronos - exchange item supplied in error without question.

A. N. Other well known supplier in the rural midlands - have a row with a customer over the phone then come and tell you how many customers they fell out with like that. I suppose they think they are better off without customers like that.

My suggestion of a straight ended d-bit will do such a 1-off job perfectly.

If you want to counterbore holes, make d-bit. or a 4-tooth cutter from silver steel. It will take about 15 minutes and last for years.

Hi John,

Here in the mother country we moved on from scouring powder in the '70s.

I still have nightmares about 'skates on ice' as this video demonstrates:

We now call Jif Cif, for some unfathomable reason, Ajax is long, long gone.
