Thread: Lincoln and District MES open weekend 20th/21st Sept
15/09/2014 11:21:57

Lincoln and District MES are holding there Open weekend, this coming weekend 20/21 Sept

There are limited facilities as it is not a public running event, more of a social gathering, but interested people / model engineers are welcome to come and pay us a visit.

The format is that of a miniature traction engine rally with a road run for the traction lads and the railway will be in operation with visiting locos both days.

There is still space to bring a loco if you so wish (usual ins and boiler certs need to be presented)

Details on the following link :- www.lincolnmes.co.uk/2014-open-weekend/

If you do want to bring a loco contact me via private message.

I had a look on ebay yesterday and decided that 2 for £3.10p delivered was worth a try, so I will report back when they arrive.

I was given a set of Hemingway drawings and made my own but found as drawn, the pivot block that clamps in the toolpost was too short for the QCTP on my Boxford,so the handle would have fouled. I made the pivot block longer to clear this, the guy who gave me the drawings had a similar problem but overcame it by just making a longer boss for the handle.

Thread: Boxford Lathe

I got a set of half nuts from Latheparts, they were fine and of good quality.

You have got a good lathe with a Boxford, under rated in comparison with other model engineers lathes.

That was why I mentioned the belt drive bench mount Boxford, they probably still have the tooling and could put it back into production if there was sufficent demand to fill the recently vacated niche.

Sounds very much like you are describing a modified Boxford ME10 but using the VSL headstock spindle to give L00 mounting and a large bore. If only they were still producing the belt drive machines.

It is a shame Boxfords did not have the same popularity as Myfords as they are a very capable machine.

I used a 4" nail bent into an L shape, the point gets into the root of the thread and will displace any swarf when you run it round the thread.
Thread: square head bolts

When I wanted some square headed coach screws( I could only find hex hd) when I was making my 7 1/4" slate waggon I cut off the hex heads and put a short thread on the shank, then made nuts from square bar and silver soldered them to the shank.

I suppose this method could be applied to square nuts and studding to give you what you want.
Thread: Boxford headstock spanner

I suppose one other way would be a "crows foot" wrench if the square hole came out far enough to clear the front face of the headstock or make your own by welding a socket to a cut down ring end of a combination spanner.

I heated a spanner and bent a deep offset to clear the bed when I stripped both of my Boxfords in the past. I think I had a cut down spanner as well.

As it is a Southbend/Boxford clone, you could try John Ward at www.latheparts.co.uk as he makes spares for Boxfords.

Hope this is of use

There is a bit on the Kinver and West Mids SME website about a 5" model of "Catch Me Who Can" they made a while ago.

Regarding M Machine, I tend to use the phone rather than email. They always seem somewhat busy when I speak to them, so perhaps your mail slipped through the net.

Thread: What are you building?

I have plans for a couple of loco's in 7 1/4" I bought plans for Wren from Ken Swan a lot of years ago but never really go my teeth into it as for a beginner it is a very detailed loco.
Since I joined the Lincoln MES I have had some assistance and chipped away at it, but with my son being eager to get something on the track, I got a set of "Dougal " plans from Reeves and have got stuck into scaling it up to 7 1/4". Through the club I found we have a very good and helpful foundry locally so with Dougal not being too detailed I have made patterns and got castings for enough to have a rolling chassis soon and just the cyl patterns left to make.

I would have thought with 3 1/2" the back to back would not be particularly critical for raised tracks as flangeways and check rails do not seem to feature on this type of track.
The problem area would be where ever 3 1/2" is "on the ground" and has points to negotioate.
In 7 1/4" there are std (6 13/16" back to back) and narrow (6 3/4") wheel standards but the track standard will accomodate both as the flangeway width and check gauge are big enough to accomodate the larger flange width. Although I found at my local club one particular point had been built particularly tight and I had to increase the back to back on the slate waggon I have just finished by 15 thou to stop it trapping the flanges and riding up.
