Thread: How should we describe non-metric tooling?

I don't think of my machines as "non-metric" Raymond.

Simply put they are "Imperial" - they were made that way and will remain so.

I do of course have a few metric tools (albeit they are in the minority) - so perhaps I should start to think of them as "non-Imperial" ?

So that would seem to answer the question but no doubt there will now be a long and heated discussion on the subject - but the sun's shining again outside, life is short, so time to go and do something useful

IanT

Ian I was mid apprenticeship during the change here in Australia one fine student in his last year raced out and bought a full set of metric shifters seriously!!!
At work we still worked imperial building bus & coach frames many chasiss were UK built or some US then in came the Asian such as UD, IZUZU etc all metric. Still all or materials were imperial. Many staff were European or some middle eastern. It was not until the mid 80's steel tubing etc changed to metric, by then I was out of that company but doing repairs at bus & coach co's i worked at. Now trying to explain to bosses why I'd have to build up a gap so panel sheets inside and out would not be uneven as vehicles built prior 80's had imperial tube which was larger. angry

It caused much trouble in repairing motors, bodies, drivers not understanding 8ft2" width of the body was now 2.48m wide same or that 14ft high was now4.2m these were imperative to know as road bridges clearance signs changed almost over night and as we see here old people don't take well to change.

I hate Metric I snap more bolts and nuts it comes loose more than imperial thread pitch varies between same sizes.

Neil as stated over on this thread **LINK**

Thanks to Michael who directed me to this thread it now makes it difficult for me as stated over on the other thread I can't access either the digital or archives on here. angry to see which 251 I have to stick the 252 sticker in 253's cut out onto.

Now for those who are wise in the way of editorial stuff ups and fixes Neil can and should easily gain access to the right pdf or even the back up original and correct the 251 mistake and re-post it digitally LOL.

You do realise that the US inch is different to the Imperial inch!!!!

**LINK**

Decimal or metric is used by European because they never considered 360" / 12 they only counted their 10 fingers or that its 12 months to a year.

If the Scot's get FREEDOM will they revert to their measurement also??

Neil have sent a pm to you regarding the same.

In cleaning up my desk I discovered two MEW magazines No 251 but both are different was it just my magazine which I doubt?

Signed in to double check which one should be No251 and which should be No252 via digital subscription to find MEW has been removed?

My Digital subscription to ME is there. Recently received a in the post a copy of ME 4560??? I am not subscribed to receive post copies??

Awaiting MEW postal No256?

At a loss because it not me making changes.

With a predicted wet weekend from Thursday night plans had to be altered and one cancellation of intended.
Local show/fair was out due to the wet on Friday with Sat & Sun not starting off well either.

Sunday morning QLD Historical Vehicles group put on a great truck show at Rocklea. On the way home called in to se a new group QAMC Qld Artistic Metal Collective like mined member who dabble in all sorts from Blacksmithing, Glass making, knife & sword making. Sue and I were welcomed warmly by those there even treated to a top lunch of pulled pork and sausage sanga. Wish we had been there earlier but can't do everything at once. They had spent the day making forge tongs. We'll be going back.

Last Thursday when moving the stuff on the patio so the termite spray could be done, I've overworked my shoulder and upper arm muscles. The right the most very little done since then in the workshop with the bench, tried a bit this morning and its going to take a while due to injury.

Took a stroll/roll down to see some Jacaranda trees which have been marked for removal by council all residence of the estate bar a few are up in arms they want them left alone. Returned via the canal/water run off path. What a beaut mornin 25C and sunshine in QLD.

Ian yes thats the same problem many forums etc do have a time out set up if no activity by the user and it may be just that which is the cause as it randomly checks.

Dave the explanation of sockets does give credit to the problem and defines that it not us as users but the server end.

I don't blame Neil but if we do not bring it to their attention nothing will be done about it until such times the techies discover the fault during checks and then can advise management who also have to do battle with accountants who hold the purse strings who get paid great sums of money to save money so they can get pay rises for doing so.

Look in the car park who's got the best cars? Then again you guys are in the UK its best push bikes, suits or clobber.

angryangry 2 Just did it again while typing the reply below. went to post it and boooooom I had to sign in yet again.

Thanks all for the comments as it looks like I am not the only one who suffers erratic connection issues.

We all love to blame other things for whats going on but here is something to consider. If the banks and online shopping had this sort of thing happening they would have to listen to customers complaints no matter how big or small.

I spent a good few hrs connected last night going through the archives of ME not one drop out and some time again this morning. Now consider I was not posting or reading threads yet still idle off the forum.

Neil in all the times I have had drop outs since signing up with this forum its always come about while i have been typing up a post/reply adding photos etc. Thats enough to phiss the most patient person off.

It could be the FBI or Trump looking for anti-anything he is/was good I believe at dumping people.

I wonder if being a good quality spanner will he be able to get the life time exchange.

Could it have been he didn't do it but maybe a revenge thing from his wife, girlfriend, partner or even their other half IF he'd been caught out.

Ok so if this is the only site its happening on. All updates are done and although I have only begun to post again in the last 2 weeks, I have signed in over the last 12 months without being dropped out?????

Neil I am surprised staying logged in 24/7x5 so your the cause of hackers gaining access LOL.

So we all don't use the same ISP or are they all the problem???

Maybe its time to clear the server cache??

Ian is right it does happen on here far more often than other forums. The subject has since I joined been broached often. It IS AGPIA when having signed in typed up a topic/reply added pics etc etc only to loose the bloody lot because its dropped out.!!!!

It turns users OFF and therefore we miss out on possibly great replies, great threads, and great photos.

New workshop woodworking bench coming along slowly a dry fit of rails legs and frames. When I find the darn wheels I put away for it I can continue blush

Morning spent clearing the veranda of all so tomorrow the fellow who has to come access the pre-drilled holes through concrete can spray for white ants. Its much required barrier soaking right round the footpath areas here last for 5 years?
