Thread: Is this forum usage more MEW than ME?
07/05/2013 12:50:33

My feeling is that having David Clark as the original Moderator may have attracted more of the MEW crowd. There are many other forums which attract are dedicated to specific types of model, but this site is well suited to discussing errors or omissions in the current/past magazine articles.

But based on past observations I suspect people are not going to post here about articles/model published in other magazines as there is likely to be a conflict of interest between the owners of this site and the competitors. e.g. if someone starts making negative comments about say poor drawings in the competitors publication. Equally I can imagine that making negative comments about models/castings/services provided by the ME suppliers could be a little difficult for the site owners.

Thread: Banned from workshop.
30/04/2013 08:03:47

This is an opportunity to buy all those tools and casting sets and get them delivered whilst she is not around to complain about the cost wink 2. Then when she comes home she is unlikely to have the time to go rummaging... in a few years (when you also get time to return to the workshop) you can look innocent and claim "ho those... I have had them for years".

Thread: new chuck key
16/04/2013 16:51:31

I have made numerous for mine out of mild steel and never hardened any. I would prefer to bend the key rather than the chuck.

Thread: Preparing castings
09/04/2013 08:35:33

The problem with spraying with primer on castings this early is that it is going to attract oil which means that you will need to remove it later before you look to do the actual painting.

Good old fashioned engineering blue works well and as Fizzy says you can also use a permanent marker. I personally find applying engineering blue with a brush faster and less likely to come off on my fingers wink 2.

I have never had any problems with my Iron castings rusting prior to machining but then my workshop is fairly rust free: Do you get problems with your machine tools? If not don't worry.

Thread: Stength Of Soldered Joints
21/03/2013 14:47:35

 Stew,

We in the avionics industry have been forced to move to SnAgCu solder. Mechanically a SnPb (tin-Lead or Eutectic joint) is ductile and flexible. SnAgCu (Lead-Free) joints are stiff and brittle. this is caused by the tin-lead forming a 2 phase structure where as the Lead free forms an inter-metallic compound suspended in the Sn Matrix.

Long and short of the new stuff: It fractures much easier than classic soft solders, electrically has a nasty habit of growing whiskers over time which causes short circuits. If you see some good old fashioned soft solder at a car boot sale: buy it. The "lead free silver solder" is only desigend to replace soft solder do not confuse it with silver solder.

Thread: Quality Assured Copper Boilers
20/03/2013 10:05:02

Jason, you make it sounds a bit like becoming a Chartered Engineer. Fill in the form, get a couple of people to say nice things about you, pass an interview and then pay the excessive fees every year to add four letters after your name. Back in the 1980's anyone joining the BCS was immediately made a CEng they were so desperate for members.

Shame such memberships are not as widely recognised as having any real meaning, unlike in Academia where you are given an internationally recognised title, for life wink 2

(I note that the IET have no problem asking me to provide presentations at their professional events even though I choose not to fund their institution as a member.)

Ian: in light of the copyright clause on this forum I will not be using a forum album to host any of my photographs. If anyone wants to see the modification then it is available to all on this page: **LINK**

Ian, being that it is dead in the centre of the spindle and the dial guage has a hardened ball centre working against the piece of brass, no problem at all.

Jo

12/03/2013 10:20:56

Ian my Prazimat mill is similar to your machine and I fitted a dia gauge on the top of the quill: Nothing exciting just drilled a hole in the top cover clamped the dial gauge with a grub screw and then added a little brass bush for when I was not using a draw bar:  I would have posted pictures of it but this forum software does not accept standard image codes for some reason.

I have put together a simple design and have all the parts to for a fine quill feed but have not yet got around to making it.

I also have a DRO on the Z axis and thanks Gray, will be taking your advice and giving it a good oiling as yes mine also sufferes from sticking.

Thread: Myford quick tool post question
18/02/2013 09:18:05

David (B), are you talking about the four way tool post or your new QCTP? If the latter then you will have no problem with your 10mm tools, there will be enough adjustment. >>

If you look to reuse your four way tool holder as a rear tool post with a suitable packer you will have no problem with tool height as the cutting edge is at the bottom rather than the top. >>

Thread: New Forum Moderator

Sounds good to me Ken,

I moderate over on MEM and I have learnt a lot by being forced to read every single article posted. As moderator you will get to know who are the trouble makers, the real characters, who know what they are talking about and those who are worth listening to.

Thread: Grasshopper Engine
31/01/2013 18:51:37

Jason,

I am still trying to be good and not buy any more castings. I already have my eye on something very sexy to add to my collection, something that I have no doubt will be both challenging and I anticipate will find very rewarding wink 2.

All the dimensions of that Canadian Grasshopper match the 1965 Sydney Owen design.

Thread: Free Speech

David,

The problem was not this thread but the one about vices as I mentioned in the posting. I posted three times before I spotted the "item has to be cleared" before it will be posted...

Sad world isn't it.

Thread: when is a precision vice not a precision vice>?
25/01/2013 18:10:05

Jason: For comparison, my Colchester Master calibration figures

Spindle run out = 0.0001"

Runout at the end of a 12" bar worst case vertical/horizontal = 0.0001"

Tally round run out = 0.00008" = 0.002mm

I cannot machine to those tolerances, I wish I could.

Ok I have posted a totally neutral reply to the postings talking about commerically available vices and hours later I am still waiting for it to be moderated. How can members engage in a conversation if we have to wait so long for our posts to be published?

Thread: when is a precision vice not a precision vice>?

Much of the Chinese stuff is pretty good these days, the early stuff was suspect (It is like comparing early Japanese motorbikes with the modern ones: they learnt and left us far behind).

I must be honest keep looking at the Little SEIG 1 Mill and thinking "I don't like the quality but as a set of castings to make a decent little mill I couldn't get the raw castings for that money". Throw away a few bits make some quality items. Or would I rather be making model engines?
