Neil,

I must have some from the same batch as you! John Bogs mentioned using sash weights in another forum so I went to the reclaimed building materials site and got a few. Couldn't touch them even with an angle grinder! They have sat under my bench ever since. Maybe I should have another try....

Thread: Which Universities do people recommend for Mechanical Engineering?
09/04/2012 21:20:48

Hi Andy,

It very much depands on what you want to do with the qualification, and what you expect to get out of the course. I went to Imperial College 35 odd years ago, studying Aero Eng, although we shared many lectures with Mech Eng. I wanted to be able to make things and although the Imperial course is very highly regarded, it was, in hindsight, too theoretical for what I wanted. I probably would have been better going to Loughborough, which at the time offered far more practical courses. (That said, having a degree from Imperial has done me no harm whatsoever...)

So think about what you want to do on the course and after it - what is the course leading to - and study the course content very carefully to make sure it is what you expect.

Above all - enjoy!

Thread: New blocks on the kid ?
23/03/2012 18:19:42

Hi Ketan,

Thanks for the info on the ER25 size.

It has been asked already - but cannot be seen in the pictures - are the blocks bored through to allow long stock holding?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Are there any plans to do the same in ER25 size?

Thanks,

John

Thread: Drill press advice?
18/03/2012 21:59:20

Chris,

I don't know where you are (hint to all posters - put your location in your profile!) but in the north -east, Bede Tools (google them) often have a good range of UK made pillar drills. Well worth looking at, may be superior to new ones and offered at a sensble price.

No connection etc...

John

edited to add UK made.

Thread: Newall Dro On a Myford Super 7 Advise Please
10/03/2012 14:48:19

Hi Bob,

I too have the saddle lock on the front of the apron. I used the idea in MEW May 2010,  no 163 in the archives.

The lock uses the thread dial mounting and works very well indeed.

More photos in my album under 'Super 7 saddle lock'.

Thread: Northern Modelling Exhibition
05/03/2012 23:45:15

Blimey! More coal to fire up the outrage traction engine! Come on guys, it is a show, not a life changing experience. I went on Sunday, had a very pleasant day out and will go back again. I live 90 miles away.

This was a first show at this venue. To expect a full turn out of traders for a first show with an unknown 'audience' would be, in my view, naive. I am sure that the usual traders will have had a good look at the show and will make an informed business decision as to whether to attend next year. Let's face it – for us it is a day out; for them it it their livelihood.

And, be honest, if you had gone to the local Sunday market and brought a bunch of dodgy hacksaw blades, or an unsquare square for 3 pence halfpenny, would you be bleating about on here? If it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Drill bits – have a look at the ends! Caveat emptor.......The show organisers will have asked for trade stands to attend – they cannot be expected to vet every item. As for the stand with the 'tennis umpire' – I asked for a price and was given such a mouthful that I declined to purchase- simple!

There are many posts bemoaning the lack of interest in ME or machining by young people, and yet when a show comes up that – from my visual perspective - attracted loads of youngsters, there is a wail about to whom it is directed.

Just to repeat. I enjoyed it.

Top tip - Don't buy cheap crap.

all the best,

John

Thread: myford lathe
01/03/2012 21:25:53

Hi DW,

Have a look on the Yahoo Myford Group - you will find lots of good info:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/myfordlathes/

For general lubrication on my S7 I use Nuto 32. This is an hydraulic oil, and any such oil with a 32 spec will be similar.

There has been an awful lot written about oil for Myfords, but I think it is worth remembering that oils have evolved a great deal since the original Myford oil spec was written, and that (usually) more 'nearly right' oil is better than no perfect oil! There has been talk of some high pressure (hypoid?) oils affecting bronze bearings but I don't know about that.

Hydraulic oils are often available from agricultural suppliers.

Thread: Lathe Leveling
23/02/2012 08:28:28

Hi David,

You say: 'It was under the cabinet. I guess this might have been where I was going wrong with the test ?'

Yes - this would appear to be the mistake. The levelling is done with the jacking screws on the lathe's own feet, thereby introducing (or removng) a twist as Blowlamp states.

I would try setting the cabinet pretty level first, and firmly fixed so it can't move. Then loosely bolt the lathe to the cabinet, and start the levelling process as per the Myford instructions, using the jacking screws in the lathe raisng blocks (assuming the lathe is so mounted).

Hi Paul,

In the UK, Screwfix do 12mm threaded rod in 300mm (maybe too short for you) and 1000 mm:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/bzp-threaded-rod-m12-x-1000mm-pack-of-5/98942

The price is OK, although you will have to find a use for the other 4 lengths!
