Mike I remember that piece of propaganda very clearly.

Dave (aka SOD) how about the crash of the Pound Sterling in 1967 when overnight it lost 14% of its value, I remember it well as I was overseas serving in Trucial Oman at the time and paid in local currency. The Establishment looked out for us though, surprising as it seemed, and continued to pay us the same amount of local currency as though there had been no devaluation, so we didn't lose out, in fact we gained because the local British Forces Post Office charged the devalued rate for British Postal Orders which meant that we could exchange local currency for postal orders at the new rate and post them home to family to bank in the UK, meaning we gained 14% . Probably wasn't strictly legal but we all did it.

Drawings on Oldiron's link specifies the attachment thread so just a matter of obtaining a 2 MT arbour with a blank end that can then be threaded to suit, a simple project I would think.

I am all for keeping the time here to GMT, we have 5 cats and when the time changes they can be very persistent in their efforts to wake you up in the mornings as they are convinced we have overslept. Takes them a while to adjust to the new times but then six months later we do it again just to confuse them.

Pretty certain all Moore and Wright is now produced in a Chinese factory with no production remaining in UK. Is this progress or a retrograde step brought about by the Accountants.

Thread: 4 facet drill "sharpening"
04/11/2017 19:03:20

I have never tried hand grinding a four facet drill but back in the 60's and 70's when I was in the Air Force I spent a lot of time doing skin repairs and modifications on aircraft, this involves a lot of precision drilling, even when removing redundant rivets. We all soon acquired the necessary skill to hand grind twist drills, mostly 1/8 or 3/16, if it didn't cut square after sharpening then you soon acquired the wrath of those in charge as it would jeopardise the structural integrity of the task you were working on. Nowadays I have trouble seeing an 1/8 drill let alone be able to sharpen it, the toll of advancing years.

Perhaps the global warming 1000 years ago was due to an abundance of methane, the population used horses for transport then producing copious amounts of methane, ever stood near a horse when it has broken wind!!!

Thread: 'Soldering' aluminium
01/11/2017 09:06:17

Used to be a guy at exhibitions who demonstrated aluminium "soldering" using I think a butane torch, it used relatively little heat and the parent metal had to be scratched once the pool of molten solder formed to break the oxide layer and form a bond, once cooled it produced a very strong bond and the parent metal broke before the bond. The product was Swedish and not cheap but very effective, for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the product so not very helpful.

Talk about Big Brother being able to see everything we do; I heard a story and I don't know if it's true but no reason to doubt it. HMRC were pursuing an individual because they knew that he was receiving far more income than he was declaring, they tried every means to find out his true income but were unsuccessful, eventually they obtained details of his loyalty card that he used at a major name supermarket and by obtaining the required authority to access their records they found that he spent more at the supermarket than he had declared as his total income, Gotcha!!! Loyalty cards when analysed tell a great deal about our way of life, we leave our digital footprints everywhere and there are those whose job it is to read them and amass data about us all.

Thread: Adding a DRO to my mill
30/10/2017 19:41:22

I fitted glass scales to the X and Y axis on my Champion V20S, the Z already had a built in scale; I purchased them from DRO Systems and the quality was excellent as was the after sales service. Not the cheapest around but worth it for the quality and no hassle, good company to deal with, usual disclaimer.

Thread: Condensation
30/10/2017 14:44:10

Mick you will probably find that you need both, definitely insulate the roof, I would suggest using Celotex sheets, a minimum of 50mm thick but ideally 100 mm, brilliant insulation for workshops. If possible add insulation to the walls as well, the objective is to keep the temperature within the workshop as stable as possible, it is the temperature fluctuations which cause saturated air to deposit moisture as condensation on any cold surface when the air cools. In my workshop I have plenty of celotex insulation and during the colder months, October to March, I have a small oil filled radiator set on low running 24/7 which keeps the temp about 10 to 12 degrees. I also run a dehumidifier which comes on between midnight and 6.00 am, everyday and runs while the electric is on economy seven. The humidity reading in the workshop varies between 45 and 55 % relative humidity. Since I insulated and provided constant low background heat I have not had condensation and therefore no rust. I cant stress enough how effective insulation is in preventing condensation.

Thread: The death of Diesel?
26/10/2017 14:13:00

Mike can't imagine our authorities being as prepared and proactive enough to dispense iodine tablets in the event of a nuclear incident, we seem to fail at organising basic services, our infrastructure seems to be crumbling away due to neglect.

Dave

25/10/2017 22:54:25

The only pollution that I really worry about is from the cluster of French Nuclear Power Stations along the North French coast, you can't smell it or see it and it's the most dangerous.
