Had an electric experience last year, I was changing over two light fittings on the upstairs lighting circuit at home, I switched the circuit off at the distribution board and removed both fittings and swopped them from room to room and fitted the first unit. Went to distribution board and switched the circuit on and checked the lights came on, great that one worked. So now to tackle fitting the second fitting in the other bedroom, pulled down the exposed cables prior to fitting the new light and Oh B———r got a fair belt up my right arm, as the current started to flow I remembered that I hadn’t isolated the circuit after checking the previous light. Easy done, not the first belt I have had and probably not the last I shall get. Thoroughly endorse the one hand in pocket especially when working on open live distribution board, particularly as the latest revision calls for metal enclosures on boards now, probably more forgiving when the enclosures were plastic.

I have a Champion v20 mill from Chester, when carrying out some very slow drilling I was concerned that the motor was working very hard and getting very hot, I removed the motor shroud and directed a powerful fan on to the motor to keep it cool, worked fine and brought the motor temp down to acceptable level. Once that job was finished I obtained two 40 mm diameter computer cooling fans which I located in the front of the motor shroud and they pull plenty of cooling air across the motor so no more overheating.

Geoff, I think concentrated doses of antibiotics affect us all in the same way, I can’t tolerate any dairy so live yoghurts etc are a no no for me, I take Acidophilus Plus capsules available from Holland and Barrett, states they have 2 billion live bacteria per capsule, they do the trick for me even when I have to take antibiotics for extended periods, six weeks or more. Life would be unbearable without them, I find two capsules a day takes away the stomach problems, definitely money well spent.

Brian, I am spending a week on the Cambridgeshire Fens in a narrowboat next month, looking forward to a nice leisurely time. There is four of us in a 7/8 berth boat, we should have enough room, I have bagged the Skippers bunk, wife will be chef and daughter and her partner will be deck hands, just hope the weather is kind.

I had a “brilliant idea” that during power cuts I could use a portable generator to run the electrics of our gas heating system so not be without heating, wife is disabled and dreads the prospect of prolonged loss of heating during cold weather. Rigged a lead that could connect the generator positioned outside, for obvious reasons, with just the heating circuit, connected up and ran the generator, result nothing, it was at this point that I realised the output from small generators is too ragged to run sophisticated circuit boards. The generator has been relegated to a place under the bench in my workshop and awaits a prolonged power cut and it will be pressed into service to power the pumps on the filter system of my koi pond, I am sure the pumps will cope with the sine wave fluctuations.

If you need Alum it is readily available on the internet, when I ordered some it took only a day to arrive, can’t remember where I ordered it from but there are plenty of suppliers..

Joe, your hacksaw looks brilliant, as always well engineered, I love seeing your machines and tools posted on here, it gives me inspiration to get working in the workshop.

Think you will find that calliper manufacturers buy in their labels, make sense to let someone make thousands at a time, economies of scale equals bigger profits.

If the regulations originated with the UN then the presumption is that they would want to apply them worldwide, I assume that would then include the continents of Asia and Africa, I wish them good luck with that! I am not against regulations, I think they serve a purpose in promoting safety and standardisation, a good thing for everyone’s wellbeing, but in all honesty I can’t see compliance in any form within third world countries.

Not what I did today but yesterday. Earlier this week I received an email from my internet provider Sky, saying that their systems had been breached and I needed to change my password, well I took this to be another scam email, seem to be getting a lot recently, ignored the email and it wasn’t till yesterday that I realised I hadn’t received any emails on my Sky email address. So yesterday I spent quite a long time trying to reset the password on the email software, not achieving any success. In desperation I posted a query on the net “ How do I change the password on my Sky email account” , there were quite a lot of references to follow, I clicked on one which took me to Sky page, one that I hadn’t seen before, and was invited to click on an instruction whereby I could change my password, which I successfully did. That didn’t solve the problem though, I still couldn’t receive any emails on my Sky email address, I had to then go into the programmes on my IPhone, IPad and MAC computer to change the passwords on those. This morning when I went Clay Pigeon Shooting I asked if anyone there had suffered problems with Sky, one other person was experiencing problems so I said I will message you with the information to sort the problems. He succeeded in sorting his problem and texted me to say that when he clicked on his emails there were 450 which downloaded, I thought that I got a lot but he is in a different league. I think the moral of all this is take notice of emails from your provider, problem is how do you know if they are genuine.

Manny, I used an electric paint sprayer quite a few years ago and the results were awful, they don’t use air to atomise the liquid they just force it through a small orifice, the result is that the paint splatters everywhere and it just runs as it’s difficult to control how much paint goes on. If using a normal air driven spray gun is not an option then I would recommend using aerosol cans, they can give an excellent finish with a little practice. There are many different suppliers of aerosols with a multitude of different paints I am sure there are some that will suit your needs. I have a compressor and spray gun but by choice I use aerosols.

Dave, aka SOD, I think your contribution sums up the situation as it stands, I made a complaint to TPS and shouldn’t have wasted my time, they are not helpful in the least. As for any help with legislation from Parliament again don’t hold your breath, it seems caller display is our best bet.

Fitted X and Y axis DRO’s to my Champion V20 mill, albeit it is not a Warco, the principles are identical, I put my X axis on the front edge of the table purely because I didn’t want to restrict the Y axis. Fitting both axes was straightforward, no problems encountered and the fitting kit which came with DRO’s was a great help. Good luck with fitting it, makes life so easy that you wonder why they don’t come as standard on all mills.

Martin, I think the discussion progressed the way it did because the original poster questioned material certification linking this to legal liabilities and was unsure how the process worked in respect of home built boilers, the system, such as it is, works and we are all relatively safe from hordes of exploding boilers.

Eric, thanks for the info, I don’t know the specifics of the canal in question and so logically straight to the river was the preferred option. I know that canals in general have spillways at specific locations in order to dump excess water having seen them on my travels.

Once you as the customer accept delivery of a certified material with its relevant material certificate, then you cut the material and make the relevant parts for your boiler construction, the chain of traceability can be frustrated if you are making parts from more than one piece of copper and different material certificates apply to each piece of copper used. At best, unless you record which batch of material each part is made from and I doubt that as model engineers we are going to those lengths, then the traceability has been lost and the only surety is that you can quote that all material used was of the relevant material specification but in the event of any failure it is not possible to trace a fault to a specific certified batch of material. In industry, and I have worked on components that are used in nuclear engineering situations, traceability of all materials, via an accredited quality system, is required such that faulty material has to be traceable back to the casting process, to expect this with a model engineering boiler is in practical terms not possible as the end users I.e. the model engineers, do not have a recognised quality system and appropriate regulation, therefore any legal processes would unfortunately rest with the boiler constructors.

I have been registered with TPS for years but now get loads of unsolicited selling calls and scams, so it seems that TPS is now a wasted effort and as has been said above, even the govt departments are selling your so called data, we just have to accept there is no such thing as privacy in respect of telephones anymore.
