Thread: I'm making D reamers on a ML8 please help me get a proper lathe! |

Sam, you made mention of an old Lister 5.1 CS, my interest was sparked as I am also into stationary engines, have a Lister A and D under refurb, bit of a long term project, do you use your CS for any working purpose or just for enjoyment. |

Welcome to the forum John, I spent 22years working on defence equipment albeit in the Air Force but I see where you are coming from with your appraisals of military equipment design, would love to see photos of your restorations. |

JA we might just be on the verge of another pandemic which will adjust world population figures, we need to be careful what we wish for. |

I live in East Sussex and my eldest daughter lives north of Wigan in Lancashire, if I post anything to her using first class it inevitably takes five working days to reach her, complaints to Post Office are useless they never explain why there is a problem. We now only use second class and you guessed it the letters also take five working days to reach her. Can we go back to the old times when we only had one class of delivery and two deliveries a day and invariably letters could reach their destination the next working day wherever they were sent to. |

EGA, I don’t think I would like to try running modern braking systems with any water in them, in fact brake fluid changes are part of the service cycle to eliminate any water that may be in the system, brake fluid is very hygroscopic, I take you point about the historical use of water in braking systems, it is a very good hydraulic medium. |

Agree with Hopper, brake fluid will definitely not be water based as the heat generated in braking systems would boil the water = disaster i.e. no brakes. |

I share my workshop with a freezer that is an overflow for the one located in the kitchen which means that the other half visits my workshop when she needs items from the freezer; she constantly harasses me about the tidiness or lack of in my workshop. This goes on for so long until she decides a tidy up is called for, to preserve cordial relations I agree and move things around to resemble some form of order, the problem is that from that point on I cannot find things that I need. The workshop may have looked disorganised before the tidy up but I could invariably find items as and when I needed to, afterwards no chance, I similarly end up ordering tools that I know I have but have disappeared. |

The worlds most staunch supporter of the Imperial System, the USA, was I believe in fact the first country to adopt the Metre Standard in the late 1800’s, so why their reluctance of the metric system ? |
Thread: PayPal scam? |
08/02/2020 21:18:29 |
I never use my current account or my debit card for online payments, I either use a credit card or Paypal which is linked to the credit card, not ideal but it seems to work ok for me, I stopped using my debit card for the majority of my purchasing after my card was cloned in a garage and the fraudsters took £1700 from my current account. The bank were great the money was put back into my account as soon as I contacted them. |
Thread: Noisy Lathe Gearbox |
08/02/2020 21:09:43 |
John, the product you referred to was Wynns Friction Proofing, an oil additive that used to be on sale years ago, I never used it and I have no idea if it’s still available, I think modern lubricants negate the need for additives nowadays. |

I would suggest ear defenders when using the lathe, I have a Chinese geared head lathe which is loud due to inaccurately machined gears, way too much backlash. |
Thread: Possible machine hoist? |
03/02/2020 19:42:07 |
We have a wheelchair hoist in the back of our Honda Jazz, to load and unload the wife’s mobility scooter, I am very impressed with the quality of the product but it certainly wasn’t cheap, nearly £1800 fitted, it’s a small niche market with few suppliers hence the price. In respect of the Haltrac hoist, an amazing bit of kit, have lifted numerous engines in and out of cars with it, I think I still have it somewhere must be 50 years old now. |

I think a lot of the problem here is “Stainless”, what spec is the material? Some stainless materials are notorious for stress relieving after any machining op, if it was mine I think I would go for surface grinding which would probably minimise any subsequent distortion. |
Thread: Problems with Sky emails |
02/02/2020 21:38:05 |
My problem was knowing where the particular problem was, Apple were very helpful even though it wasn’t their problem, without their help I would never have sorted it. |
02/02/2020 21:13:21 |
I am posting this in case anyone else is having trouble with Sky emails. In our house we have 5 Apple devices, 2 IPhones, 2 IPads, and an IMac, last Wednesday we stopped receiving any Sky.com emails , also we were unable to send any Sky.com emails on any of the devices, strangely we were able to receive and send emails that we have with other providers, outlook.com etc. I contacted Sky our internet provider to sort the problem, having already uninstalled and reinstalled the relevant software to no avail. On our Sky.com browser our Sky.com emails were present but not able to be downloaded. The Sky operative walked me through uninstalling and then reinstalling the relevant software again to no avail, we still received the same error messages relating to Sky emails.
The Sky operative was really unhelpful claiming that it was third party problem, down to Apple, and therefore Sky wasn’t going to help solve the problem. I was getting rather frustrated at this point and asked for the email address of Sky Customer Services to be told they don’t accept emails any complaint has to be in the form of a written letter and delivered to their postal address, blood pressure was rising by this point. During the course of the dialogue with the Sky operative he mentioned in passing that Yahoo, who handle the email side of things for a Sky, had recently changed their security protocols, this convinced me that the problem lay within the Sky network.
I have written a suitably worded letter of complaint to Sky hoping to get some sense out of them. Meanwhile I went on Apple’s website and using the chat facility and corresponded with a very helpful operative who went through many processes to try and sort the issue. The operative was convinced that the problem originated with Sky, after spending a long time with me she seemed to think that it was relevant that Sky mentioned the security issues with Yahoo, she thought that it was worth trying to set up my Sky.com email using Yahoo as the service provider, bingo problem sorted.
If Sky knew that Yahoo had created problems by changing their security protocols then why did they absolve themselves of any responsibility for resolution of the problem, it was not a problem that required Apple to make any input but they stepped up to the challenge and gave excellent service, my opinion of Sky has now sunk even lower. So if you are getting problems with Sky emails, the answer strange as it may seem, is to change your settings to Yahoo, it certainly worked for me. |
