Morrison’s have introduced a scheme whereby you can order a box of provisions for £35.00. You can state whether you are a meat eater or vegetarian but you have no choice other than that on the contents of the box. If you order by 3.00 in the afternoon then they will deliver the following day, boxes will be delivered by DPD. I assume the boxes are put together at a central warehouse and despatched using DPD’s next day delivery. There should be no reason that anyone need go without, however you won’t have any choice what you get but we are in an extraordinary set of circumstances. |

The 2 metres rule for social distancing can only be a compromise, if it’s windy and you are downwind of someone then you could very easily be contaminated. I remember in 1967 when I was serving in the Air Force in what was then Trucial Oman, there was an outbreak of smallpox in the village adjacent to our airfield, we were all addressed by the medical officer who illustrated how contagious the virus could be by stating that in the past, infection had carried a distance of 5 miles on the wind. Whether he was trying to frighten us or not I don’t know but we were all vaccinated against smallpox again that day, irrespective of our vaccination status. It was a serious outbreak of the disease and one of the last major episodes of smallpox until it was finally considered eradicated. There were no casualties within our unit but the villagers were not so lucky. I think with my experience then, I am going to ensure that I stay indoors as much as is possible, I think that this may be the reason we are encouraged to stay indoors at home. Hopefully you will all stay safe. |

Perhaps dogs and cats need to practice social distancing as well. 🤪. |

It seems a lot of regulations are being relaxed, my grand daughter flies with BA as cabin crew and she is due her annual recertification in two weeks time but has been cancelled because CAA have said certifications will extend from 12 to 18/months because of the crisis, So we can expect extensions on various requirements, bet they don’t extend road tax though. |

Wife suffers from severe asthma and I unfortunately had pneumonia at the end of January, so both us in the category of home isolation. Obtaining groceries a bit of a problem as daughter who lives local and has been shopping for us is required to quarantine for fourteen days, so supermarket delivery seems to be the way forward. Tried Sainsbury’s, Tesco , Morrison’s, Waitrose, Ocado and ASDA , all to no avail, all slots allocated. Last night at 1.00 am tried them again and surprise ASDA had a few slots available on the 13th of April so I grabbed one and submitted a list of what I could see we would need then, difficult to think 3 weeks in advance, another surprise was that I was able to reserve it as a regular weekly slot meaning we should be able to keep continuity of supplies always dependent of the items being in stock. I would advise anyone who needs a supermarket delivery to try them all and to keep trying, I secured my slot at 1.00 am, it might just be that they release further slots after midnight each day, who knows how it works. Meanwhile I hope you all manage to get supplies and stay safe. |

Joe I understand your concerns about Amazon with Kindle and their restrictive practices and prices, I received a Kindle as a Xmas present and I really like it., you don’t have to pay the high prices as there are always books on reduced offers and there are millions of books in their library always available , not like your conventional library. I am sure that you will adapt yourself to the different feel and lack of smell, I have found and read books on there that I would never have come across ordinarily, it has certainly broadened my knowledge. You just need to decide if it is for you, as you say you have virtually exhausted books available local to you. |

PGK,PGK, I suffered much the same route to yourself to get the position that I am now in retirement. When we bought our first house I was 36 and worked 7 days a week at a variety of jobs in order to get a mortgage, and yes I remember only too well 15% mortgages, money was extremely tight in my younger days, we couldn’t spend money as wastefully as people do today, my daughters still call me a Scrooge because old habits die hard. I would like to know what planet Ady 1 is living on, no way I will give up any percentage of my hard earned pension. |

Martin, I don’t know anyone who has died from the virus yet but I am sure it won’t be long with the rate at which the figures are escalating. |

Howard are your calculations flawed, are you assuming that everyone of the 67,000,000 will be infected to give your 1 in 478,000; perhaps you know something we don’t ? |

My grandaughter plays under 16’s women’s rugby, she lives just outside Wigan so its almost a religion there, she is fervent with her rugby, her father, my son-in-law , coaches a youth rugby team so it’s a family tradition. |

I have a Warco BV 20 lathe, no longer a current model, and I bought a Dickson type from RDG. I was happy with the quality and the price was reasonable with extra tool holders available also at very reasonable prices. |

False hope for the flights from Mexico, the boys were told that because they hadn’t been out of Europe for fourteen days they couldn’t be landed in America, even though they were transiting through, and the airline had confirmed no problem, so the airline have rescheduled them for flights on the 26th, again transiting via Washington, so we hope the situation will resolve then, fingers crossed or it looks like August before they will be able to return, it’s going to be boring sitting in Mexico till then, just hope they like Mexican food. |

Thanks for your thoughts Hopper, all may not be as it is expected, the boys got to the airport and the airline, United, stopped them boarding, that’s all we know at the moment, waiting for further update from Daughter. Sorry to hear that you have reported cases in Cairns now, it looks as though it is going to reach every corner of the world. I envy you living in Oz, was out there 10 years ago when Daughter got married in Nelson Bay near Newcastle, spent a month in Oz and was very impressed, I have spent a lot of time travelling the world and I could happily move to Oz, not keen on the snakes and spiders though. |

Previously on this topic I mentioned that my Son in law and grandson were trapped in Mexico having had their return flights cancelled and the probability of having to stay there throughout the pandemic, well my daughter managed, after much hard work on the internet, to purchase two tickets that leave Cancun today arriving at Heathrow, via Washington, tomorrow morning, when checking their documentation my daughter found that very helpfully the great American administration had taken it upon themselves to cancel their Esta’s meaning they couldn’t travel via the USA. My daughter worked hard last night and by 1.30 am she had managed to reinstate their ESTA’s but only if she paid the fee of fourteen dollars again for each, so hopefully fingers crossed they should be back in England tomorrow, it is difficult to describe how much heartache this situation has caused our family, my wife and daughter have not been sleeping while this goes, perhaps now we can all get some sleep. There must be many families who are in similar circumstances, my heart goes out to them, it isn’t easy particularly when the Foreign office and the British Consul in Mexico were unhelpful. |

The effects of the virus are being to impact in our village; a group of ladies run a drop in centre in the village hall every Wednesday, it is a well attended event that brings the elderly together for a couple of hours where they can get tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes and there is a book exchange where they can get plenty of reading matter. The population of our village is comprised of a large percentage of retired people so this event is well attended, yesterday there were only two customers who attended, whereas normally there would be around forty odd. The event is now on hold until the pandemic has run its course which is a shame as for some of the attendees it is probably their only contact with other persons. The effects of the pandemic will be far reaching and last into the future. |

Is it a reflection of our country’s forward planning that we find ourselves now short of face masks, ventilators and protective clothing etc. I know that Italy are now struggling under the weight of patients but they have considerably more of these resources than we do; we are supposedly the fifth richest economy in the world and in terms of wealth far ahead of Italy, where has our so called wealth been spent, certainly not on forward planning or even our roads which equal those of third world countries, we must have the biggest black hole ever for swallowing wealth ! |
