Thread: scam?
03/12/2018 11:35:35

As some may know my other hobby is woodworking and the name Nicole Curtis has appeared quite a few times certainly is a scam. Any respectable purchaser will put in any correspondence the item and other details of the goods being sold.

Thread: The demise of the High Street

I agree by the time you have found somewhere to park and then the prices they charge puts people off going to the shops. Also many of those that do shopping online seem to be the young as they see it as shopping of the future. Yes some of the older generation also use this way of shopping but for different reasons for example those that are unable to walk around to get what they need.

The rent of shop space here has been the downfall of shops as well.

When it comes to specialist shops that is a different matter. For one of my hobbies the nearest shops are 1/2hour drive in three different directions so if I just need a single item it works out cheaper to have it sent by mail unless it is urgently needed. I still however enjoy the drive to anyone of the three shops as I really like to have a good look around to see what is new.

For one of these shops I am even more fortunate in that he is a member of the club I belong to and brings a selection of the most used items with him as well as any special bits that we may need

Thread: Profiles

I've never come across a forum that insists on people make their location public.

I can't see why not doing so annoys some people so much. I've never come across people complaining about it being missing from people's profiles on any other forum either!

Bearing in mind some forum members are not the most internet savvy of folks and we are continually bombarded with advice to keep our personal data secure is it any wonder many choose not to make their location public*?

Neil

*If you have an unusual name and a broad locality it's easy to locate someone's address using the internet. I found someone's postcode and home town from their name and county in about four seconds. A subscription at £50 credits would let me get comprehensive details of them and 499 other people.

A very good point Neil but I xcan't see why people get annoyed when the subject is brought up

27/11/2018 11:46:14

I have notice that on many forums people ask for help and most times get it. Like here there are many willing to help others.

But the same question appears in many of these posts like where are you would it not be easier if there is a stipulation that you put a location in the profile.

Not an exact location but a general area as I can understand why putting an exact location is not desirable.

This would help a lot of people out when asking questions.

What are peoples thoughts on this

Thread: Wooden display base

Posted by Bill Chugg on 21/11/2018 08:24:22:

Thanks for the offer Derek

I said oak as I needed a light colour but any light / yellow colour would do as engine is black.

I have no woodworking skills or equipment so was looking to buy a finished base.

Would have happily paid up to £20 for a bespoke one..

Bill

Bill I will have a look to see what other wood I have. I definitely have Oak if you want that just for postage. I can cut to size and finish.

But as stated above Oak can play effect metal if both are left bare due to the Tannin in it. I turned some wet Oak once and had to clean the lathe straight afterwards and even then the metal started turning black.

If you get stuck give me a shout as I have some Oak/ Roughly where about are you

Thread: Furnace build

Last night I was browsing through some Engineering in miniature magazines and came across a two page article on a home made foundry.

It is in the June/July 1994 issue on page 11.

I found it interesting even though it was only two pages.

The article was called "Some notes on backyard iron foundry works"

Luckily I put a marker in that page to re read it later

Thread: TPI of bandsaw hacksaw
19/11/2018 11:08:58
Posted by IanT on 19/11/2018 10:02:49:

I don't have a metal cutting bandsaw Martin - just a rather nice old (woodcutting) INCA 260 that I'm very fond of.

However, I buy my all bandsaw blades from Tuff Saws (I keep about six different blade types) - where the quality and service is very good and the prices quite reasonable. So if I had a metal cutting saw - I'd certainly get my metal blades from them too. They make everything to order and it's delivered within a day or two. A small UK company that is good to be able to support is another bonus!

They have a very informative website, where there is ample advice on blade types, their uses and selection.

This page would probably be very helpful to you:

https://www.tuffsaws.co.uk/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=28

Usual caveats - I've no connection to Tuff Saws other than being a very satisfied customer etc.

Regards,

IanT

Like you I get all mine from Ian at Tuffsaws and could not agree more great service and if you have a problem or need a saw for a certain job a phone call and all is answered. You may need to phone a couple of times as he is possibly doing something noisy and can't hear the phone

Thread: Help! More 1 and 2 page articles needed!
16/11/2018 12:34:13

I can certainly appreciate the work involved in doing the work that you do. I have never done what you have but can say from the other side of the coin writing articles for submission is not a five minute job, how do I know I have written a few articles for "The Woodworker" magazine.

The amount of back and forth of e mails must take quite a bit of your time.

Thread: Truing up
16/11/2018 11:15:32

With this type of wheel you can't true them up by resurfacing as the cutting surface is only a fraction of the base material much the same as diamond stones. So you will need to investigate at other problems or the wheel you have has not been machined correct in the first place.

Thread: Noisey MEM switch
10/11/2018 16:01:39

Reading one of your posts you say you changed the switch from you drill and that one made the same noise when you fitted it to the lathe, so is there another electrical fault that is causing the problem loose contact elsewhere in the system start from the plug and work through the electrics buying a new switch may just be spending money that need not be spent.

I hope I did not read that post wrong

Thread: Solution found to the World's biggest problem . . .
10/11/2018 14:28:17

My job just before just having to pack up due to ill health was a plant mechanic which involved repairing and testing electrical tools. Later on they started to produce tools with circuit boards in them when they packed up a new board was needed which in many cases meant that it was cheaper to replace the complete tool.

I went of a course at Kango who also made other tools one being drills for the DIY market. The instructor took us around the factory and when we came to the testing station he explained that these drill are design with a working life of as little as 1/2hours work as many DIY'ers would possibly never use them for that time over a years so called use, even if many did last for longer than that.

Thread: Boiler certification in a launch

Forgetting the legal requirements for just a second, just for peace of mind if it was mine I would have it tested. I certainly would feel better knowing that it was safe to use at whatever pressure is involved.

Could the person live with themselves if something happened.

I know that model boats are different scale but many clubs would not allow anyone who belonged to them sail a steam boat without a certificate

Photobucket has changed hands and more or less gone back to how it was with all the old images available again from albums belonging to the free loaders users

The only reason I used them was that some of the forums I used you had to put photos up from sites like that, but now they have enable the uploading of photos direct from your own computer so really have no need to use them now

I use to use Photobucket until they also started to play up so now I have an external drive for all my photos and do not use these type of sites as I could see it happening again. This post has proved what I thought correct how long will it be before Flickr go the same as Photobucket
