Thread: Rob Roy coupling rods
16/07/2022 09:07:54

Thank you Rex and Nick.

Nick it was the one on the left I was talking about as you can see the centre and rear(On the right) one clearly shows bushes.

I think I will drill and fit one on the front as well after comments here and on another forum, the reason in the book for drilling the front and rear for a slightly over size hole is to allow for uneven running on the track. The centre one however is reamed to the pin

Thank you MichaelR for the link I have looked through it but it does not really show if he added bushes to the front only shows the retaining washer which he made from brass or similar material

Hi, My Rob Roy has bushes on all the rods.

Regards

Thank you I just thought it strange not to have them on all but the front two

15/07/2022 17:43:04
Getting back to where I was with the coupling rods on the Rob Roy and ready for final machining one of the jobs is to make some bushes for them (Except the centre ones as I have made those) Now for the question I notice on the plans that the rear rods have bushes in them but the front do not show any, all it shows is a recess for the washer to hold it on with a 4BA screw.
Has anyone built the Rob Roy and did you add a bush in the front rod or leave it as steel on steel.

I had to do the same as Rex described but found after a while it became loose again but a very small amount of thread lock has now sorted out the problem

Thread: why long holes are bent ?

I think that most have been covered by those mentioned above.

1 smaller drills tend to wonder more

2 blunt drill

3 incorrectly ground drills

4 material hardness through out (Hard spots

I find that pecking helps a little. As I work with metal and wood, wood tend to be the worse as it has grain which has soft and hard wood especially in the growth rings(OK not applicable in your case)

My latest issue of ME has just dropped through the door and one of the first things I read was in Smoke rings and the article titled "Oddity".

The item in the picture is not a tool but a padlock, many years ago my parents had a camphor wood chest with one of these padlocks on it

My hard of thinking is usually to measure once, measure twice, even measure thrice and cut once.... to the wrong length.

Same here i looked at the plans double checked the measurement on plan then marked the piece did this three times then cut only to find I took the measurement from the plan view and not the side viewblushblushblush

Coupling rods before I messed one up

After making a mess of one of the coupling rods I took time out and made the sliding valves. I am sure that will not be the last mistake but will try not to do any more.

Good job on the clamps Nick somewhere in the depths of the workshop I have some of these used a lot when making the wooden models

I would love to go but to be honest cost of getting there and not being able to drive that far puts me off. I can buy things I need off the internet with the money I save.

But having said that I do believe that they do need attending as stated otherwise they will be lost. I did attend the one in London many moons ago and enjoyed the day there.

Hi Derek

Being an American outline locomotive it is quite normal for the bogie or leading/trailing wheels to be unspoked disc wheels. Not as pretty as spokes!

Dave

Thank you Dave I am learning all the time

Hi
I guess I should have stressed my point about watching the comment near the end that starts at 21 minutes in the video. as a separate post.

Passing on the knowledge to ALL young people is very important to me.

It may even be that the era of the vast multinational world market is loosing steam, or at least levelling off. The lessons we are learning from serious supply issues including food, manufactured goods and raw materials is causing many governments to start thinking inward. You never know we may start to see a resurgence in local manufacturing.

No matter what happens the precious knowledge and existing small shop resources should be preserved.

Spread the word!

Regards
John

I agree, This may be a little old now but the great grandson still runs(not literally ) into my workshop to see what I am up to and is always full of questions which I answer to the best of my knowledge. He is now 9

He always sits at the back of the bench and not right on the edge

Being new to locos and building them but from what I have seen and please correct me if wrong but the small sets of wheels being solid were these not used on tenders rather than the main loco frame as boggies. All the ones I have seen on the loco section seem to have spoked wheels

I also was taught to use all three positions when tightening a drill chuck and have carried that over to my lathe chucks.

I find it does hold better than just tightening with the one point.

Have you ever noticed that when tightening in a single hole that when undoing it you will find that one will always undo easier than the other two positions.

That is one problem I will be doing this on all types of wood I do have a pyrography machine which I think I will look at if I can get a ball tip for it as they do make writing easier than some of the other tips

23/06/2022 21:17:53

Nice suggestions but it really needs to be DLWoodart as I have a banner and cards already made or being made at the moment

23/06/2022 20:38:38

Thank you all for the information and by the sounds of it because of the size will not work out and as Jason stated will end up as a mass of burning where the letters like the D, o, o, d, and a.

Anyway will have to rethink this.

So once again thank you all for the offers and info which I must admit that I had not thought about

23/06/2022 19:21:53
Not sure if this is the right place as it is a request for help. have also asked this on the MECH forum

I would like to find someone with a cnc mill that can engrave a piece of either bronze or brass to make a burning iron for my woodworking it will only be about 1" diameter not critical size but can be sized to material supplied. I will supply material and some beer tokens to be agreed upon.

Some one has said Brass would be the more suitable material

All it will be is a circle with the words DLWoodart in reverse in the centre so that when applied hot to wood it comes out the correct way around

Derek,

I have been using McAfee for several years, ever since my bank gave away a year's subscription with its online banking. I've have had no reason to doubt its efficiency though it did get some bad press a couple of years ago. Naturally, you have to pay, but at present it covers up to (I think) five devices. I get the impression that you are after a free application, in which case, I believe AVG offer a basic free version, but I have no experience with it.

John

I am not worried if I have to pay for it as long as it does what it is meant to. It was just the case of as Norton was free for a year why pay extra now it has run out I was just seeking recommendations from others at what they used

23/06/2022 14:43:58

I need to get some antivirus and VPN protection as the one that comes free with the computer has just about expired.

What do you use and what are your thoughts on it so recommendations appreciated.

It would be nice if I can use it on at least 4 devices
