Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021
14/09/2021 09:05:52

Nigel regarding early Myford gear box, I had one and fitted it to a lathe about 20 years ago. I think I had to shim the G/box mounting away from the bed to get correct alignment of the lead screw. Also I found much to my dismay several gears with teeth missing, I bough gears from HPC at Chesterfield which I had to sleeve. Took some time, but work out OK in the end. John

I suggest you have a look on Ebay as a guide to the lathe is worth, and as others have said try and locate any attachments for the lathe. Also if there is a Model Engineer/ railway club in the area, contact the secretary as the members might offer help with identification of any accessories for the lathe. John

If its on a pallet, then Pallet Ways is who you are looking for. An old friend of mine has had lots of machines moved by by them. For us, its some where on Teeside, maybe nation wide. John.

Fluke for me. Anchor Trading at Notts used to sell ex army ones, but Anchor had a big fire a few years ago. Aldi and Lidl will do for most things. Forget the capacitance rang for motor Caps, as those caps should be tested at main work full voltage not 9 volts, and how often do those cap fail anyway. An Avo or similar is the best for testing the likes of diodes and transistor out of circuit testing. John

I agree with Dave above re the welding forum, also a good book " Farm welding" lot of good pictures. No signs of the farmers friend, bale twine at all. John

Thread: Pinnacle PDM-20
05/09/2021 11:15:00

Scarborough mens (Mates) have been given a Pinnacle PDM - 20 mill/drill. Has any one got the same mill which was made in Taiwan but badge under a different name. Apparently several dealer sold similar if not the same machine in the 1970/80.We would like a handbook or a copy. An advert for a Pinnacle drilling machine is entirely different machine. Thanks to the three respondents, but no help. John

I have two 30 LED "sewing machine lights" on my super 7 which work from the mains. They come with a two pin plug, which I removed and fitted a 13 amp ones. The lights have a small circular magnet at the end of flexible piece around 10" long, got them via ebay and they are listed as "sewing machine lights". Wife has one on the sewing machine and I've one for soldering. John

Thread: Myford super 7 lead screw
02/09/2021 18:09:24

A friend who is miles apart from me, has dismantle his Myford super 7 lathe to give it a once in a life time clean, now he cannot get the lead screw back in position, passed the apron. Can any one who dismantle a Myford offer any explanation of what he should be doing. I have looked in my handbook where there is good exploded diagram, but no text. If a reader can help, please PM me with a phone number which I will pass on to George and he will call back.. John

Thread: Newman Motor Star To Delta?
31/08/2021 19:17:25

A couple of years or so ago some on here posted a series of picture on how he did the conversion and it explained in detail of he did, very informative. I've done a few for friends and have 500 volt DC insulation tester (Megger) to test the final result. You need to take the motor completely apart to locate a LUMP in the windings, mark each end the the motor and take a lot of picture as you go, to enable you to reassemble the motor on completion. Have you look on Youtube some must have done the conversion on there. John

Thread: Coolant pump - how to slow flow rate?
29/08/2021 10:23:30

I have several short pieces of BLUE hose as shown in Paul Lousick comments above. Can any one tell me how to join them up, I have tried hot water and hot air gun. Not there yet but keep on trying. John

29/08/2021 09:21:41

As DC 31k says, you wont be harming the pump restricting the output, but do ensure all connections are sound. Your heating system pump/circulator works just the same. Can you fix a bi-pass arrangement which puts less pressure on your connections. John

Thread: Manual/ book

My local "Mens Shed" have been given a Pinnacle PCD 30 bench top mill / drill, has any one got a parts instruction manual available for this machine. A copy will be OK. Thanks in anticipation. John

Thread: Chipmaster motor wiring
27/08/2021 11:00:32

To John Haine, A friend of mine altered his motor prior to wiring in an invert and he had a "backward" connected winding. I sorted the problem by reconnecting each, one at a time, can be tricky never the less. When one end is incorrectly connected you are not forming a triangle, not sure of the title of the new shape. . As always there is a way out. You will ned an analogue multi meter or a low voltage DC volt meter ( 15 or less) will be OK. The reason for the Analogue type is because you will be looking for a quick flick or deflection of the needle + or - and most digital don't show that easily. In the past I've used an AVO set on 10 volts DC, start high and work down to the 3 volt range rather than damage a meter. Using a crocodile clips connected to the meter to leads, to say V1 and V2, doesn't matter which of the three pair you start testing. Using a 12 volt car battery or any 12 volt DC supply connect the Negative lead of the battery to W1 motor lead, and then very quickly dab Positive lead to W2 us should get a small kick / deflection on the meter. If the needle is attempting to go in the Negative direction exchange the labelling on W1 and W2. Conversely if the meter reading is in the + direction you got it right first time. Now go to the other two windings and do the same to them. I think I've got it all correct. John

Have you broken stripped a tooth or two on the two fibre gears by the tumbler reverse. ? I hope not.. John

Thread: The "Lost art of hardening copper"
20/08/2021 17:56:42

Avometers 7 & 8 and most other analogue multimeters had copper oxide rectifiers, which looked like 4 little copper spring in a plastic mount. Never seen a copper oxide on a motor bike, usually a Selenium type on Bantams and Villiers. My Honda 90 had an encapsulated bridge rec, wonderful machines were the 70 & 90. John

SWA is the way to go, easy to terminate and you don't need stocks and dies or a bender either. Some wholesaler have a lot of short ends, cheap, to get rid of, and you might come across some good but used. John.

I have an RDM 350 round column table top mill/drill, there was a series of articles in ME in December 1980 on how to get over the alignment problem when raising or lowering the head. I am interested to read more about Edwin Whites idea on the same problem I think RDM mill/drills are known as Rong-Fu in other parts of the World. John

Hello John, is it a Huanyang inverter which has failed ? I have read with interest how some other members / readers are suggesting Huanyang are not up to expected standards, but I have never heard of a failure in real life. Could you be the one. John

Thread: You could not make it up ! [Olympic Cycling]
26/07/2021 18:01:56

I used to be a frequent visitor to France where the law is in favour of the cyclist almost all the time. Never get even close to a cyclist, they ride side by side and even the French driver wait. Its a treat to see older men out together side by side, and maybe 20 or 30 or more on their cycles on Sundays. Like the Dutch the French have miles of dedicated tracks/roads for cyclist. John
