Surely the obvious thing to do is contact Alibre.com. If you bought and paid for the software they should supply the licence key.

I use a tumbler for small pieces using steel media and burnishing powder. It gets rid of all corrosion even in the pits and shines just like polished steel. If you want a matt finish use ceramic shapes, ideal for deburring as well. For larger items I use a large coffee tin in the lathe. I have been restoring a lathe and have cleaned all the headstock and gearbox items using this method. I also use it to restore bits on my m/c's as well. Just load the drum and leave it all day to tumble and get on with something else. I have used this method for 20 plus years with great results. The great thing about it is you are not restricted to any particular material or media. Even crushed walnut shells do a good job on brass and other soft metals.

Thread: help surgery needed milling machine

I have a XJ25 mill from Amadeal (pretty crap mill). I have made new screw nuts for both axis on my mill. The thread is M16 x 1.5mm pitch. The thread form is conventional 60 degree metric form and not flat topped. The Y axis is obviously left hand. I bought the taps from Tracy tools and used lumps of bronze to make the nuts.

Thread: Workshop flooring

Chris- You can see them laid as they have laid them all over the factory. The only down side is if you use a bright colour they do show the dirt. I used red and grey in a chequer pattern and they do need cleaning if you want them to stay looking new but i gave up on that as they are cheap anyway. Good luck.

I did my double garage floor in hard rubber interlocking tiles from Barkley Plastics in Birmingham. They sell them on ebay around 60p each. They are excellent and very easy to lay. Oil an petrol resistant and I have not found them melting from hot swarf chips. I stand my machines directly on them and they don't squash. Definately recommend them.

Thread: Britan Repetition Lathe

Wow David. That's one component every 3.6 seconds even without a break. Your hands must have been a blur the speed you operated that machine. You don't wear a shirt with a big "S" on it under your coat do you?

Thread: Lathe Bedway Regrind
16/06/2012 21:58:41

Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost to regrind a lathe bed. I would like to get my 13 X 30 C8C lathe bed reground? How do they compensate for the saddle sitting lower after grinding with reference to the leadscrew?

Paul.

Ian.

I think your'e flogging a dead horse. I think in DC's world that not having enough time to carry out his editorial tasks is not being overworked.

Maybe if he gave up moderating this site and appointed a new moderator he would free up more time to other duties.

Thread: Almost engineering!

Not bad considering they only paid 215 quid for it. There has been a bid retraction as it is at 50 grand at the moment. A bidder entered 150 grand and then retracted it. Quite wise. I too saw it at 102 grand but it had 19 bids. Now it only has 16.

I would of thought it would be common courtesy to acknowledge a submission. You rely on your readers to submit articles but cannot find time to acknowledge. Surely it cannot be difficult to set up an auto reply for submissions by email and if contributors submitted by post cannot they include a sae for a reply. Without wishing to be rude I find some of your bullet point answers slighly arrogant and contradictory without seeming to give a dam.

Thread: London Model Engineering Exhibition

Just been to the LMEE and i must say for the last time. Took less than an hour to go round. It all seems to be contained in one hall now where as years ago when it was at Earls Court it was on 2 floors with lots going on. l know it relies on clubs and individuals for it's content but there must be a reason why it's getting smaller and smaller.
As an aside the Sandown Show is getting better with many more models and trade visiting.

Are you crop spraying or glider towing in that picture?

Machinists vices are made of very high grade cast (ductile) iron around 60,000 psi or more. Ductile iron has graphite in the form of nodular or spheroidal form rather than flakes as found in cheap grade cast iron wich is what a lot of the cheap import vices are made of.

Mechanics and Blacksmiths vices are made of forged wrought iron which makes them ductile and flex slightly and enables them to be hit without breaking.
