Thread: Decent hacksaw blades
17/11/2021 20:12:42

My recomendation is for the Swedish Bahco Hand Hacksaw Blades that I use on a power hacksaw that I have been useing for around ten years on various metals with very good performance.

Many of the blades for various manufacturers were tried and non performed as well as Bahco Brand.

Using handsaw blades in a power hacksaw is about as hard a punishment you can deal out to the blade with weight up to 5 kgs extra on the frame.

A clip on You Tube of the prototype that has been improved with a variable speed DC motor and the drip feed uses a mixture of 50/50 cutting oil and kerosine.

Personal preference for stripping paint from Steel, Caste Iron, Aluminium using Electrolosys.

Not being a fan of using very harsh chemicals and the dangers with their use and disposal.

Washing Soda Solution in a plastic container. Battery charger, Lead sheeting to positive lead, job to negative lead.

Rinse under running water while wire brushing the loose paint and nuetralised rusting.

Dewater parts with WD40 Or CRC etc to preventfurther light rust that will form if air dried only..

Has worked for me over many years now for cleaning for painting machinery overhauls - rebuilds.

Hi Chas

A special silver solder sticks are available especialy for stainless steel with a flux coating. Loads of info on You Tube or on a Google search for "Silver Solder Stainless Steel".

One possible cause is the speed control Potentiometer tracks dirty or damaged. Try Contact Cleaner on the pot or wire in a new pot of the same Ohms value.

Thread: Gas strut for Axminster SX2
30/07/2021 11:26:54

JasonB It depends on the technique you use. Bring the head down with the capstan handle until just clear of the work then engage the dog clutch. Advance the cutter with the oversize handwheel I have fitted to replace the piddly little knob as fitted on the factory machine. There is photo's in my album of the modified X2 mill.

29/07/2021 20:43:15

On a Mill Drill my personal prefference is for the gas strut to lift the with the gibs lock off. Being able to move the head up or down with no backlash works for me. Drilling or plunge milling with the correctly sharpened edge on the tool for the material being worked helps prevents cutters diving in until the backlash is taken up. I do not have any experience using an SX2 Mill Drill. The X2 has has a massive ammount of backlash that needs a lot of alterations and adjustment to get to a reasonable ammount of backlash.

The developement of reversing radar as developed by my brother in law in the early seventies because of his concern for the number of horrendous accidents on open pit coal mines in the country

Burt Munro on "The Worlds Fastest Indian" fame cast his own pistons from salvaged motor car pistons.

His 1967 record on a very much modified 750cc 1920 Indian Scout stll stands today.

Wash clean the parts in petrol or Meths to remove any oil. Work in low light or deep shade.

Heat with LPG torch to dull red and drop into a container used used diesel engine oil, Metal preferably one with a lid.

Keep the torch well away from the gas cloud that forms it is highly flamable.

Be prepared for fire fighting if it catches fire from the hot metal by putting on the lid.

Works well on most steels and cast iron.

Thread: Horizontal Bandsaw Problems - -Advice Please.
13/04/2021 21:22:56

Hi Nigel

Does the spacer-washer on the idler pulley allow it to align with the drive pulley check with a straight edge on the drive pulley.

A thin wire round the pulleys then pulled tight on the half the blade width line the blade runs on the pulleys is the true run line of the blade that allows the blade to be twisted.

The guides must not be deflect the wire out of line from this datum line.

A minor adjustment only is to allow for the wire to blade thickness variation .

Thread: Can Loctite 638 really be this good?
04/04/2021 21:41:46

The tube has the rack for the lever to the piston connected to the side that creates the upwards force load on the flange.

Perhaps if the rack was connected to the underside of the flange that supports the perspex die instead of the side of the cylinder the load on the flange to the cylinder join is greatly reduced and the glued and or swaged join will suffice.

Eric.

31/03/2021 01:58:12

Looking at the ammount of pitting corrosion on the tube Loctite is not the answer.

Machine the flange with a 45 deg chamfer 2 to 3 mm on the bore.

Carefully Swage the end of the pipe with a ball pein hammer to the chamfer.

Thread: SX2P Gas Strut Modification Issue?
04/03/2021 17:31:46

Stop looking for complicated answers to a simple problem 5 months on and the problem not solved.

Time to learn how to learn how to back off the cutter lead angle to 90 deg for machining caste iron, bronzes, and brasses.

Only my biased opinion based on a lifetime of engineering after all it's your time and money.

`Hi Martin

Yes washing machines, motor cars, and almost all modern machines use Poly Bee Belts

17/02/2021 19:30:11

Hi Martin

Have you considered using "Poly Vee Belts" for much better performance than "Vee Belts" as an alternative. Much easier to fabricate with the ability to use much smaller driver pulleys. Classic example is Wood working hand held power planers.

Eric

P.S. Poly Vee Belt Drive lives at my house

Hi

What a rigmarole to have a machine to make "Instant Coffee".

Add a plumbers nightmare to fix a problem that we never had when we put the dehydrated coffee in cup with and added freshly boiled water not boiling water.
