If you like the cardboard Knight check out Rob Ives' site as he designed that
27/11/2016 12:20:01
Since the competition finished I've added a 3D printed Knight and a servo.

Hi V8,

I thought I'd err on the side of brevity in-case people were not interested and thought that questions would get asked if people had interest.

Here's the details of the competition:

We’re declaring March as Maker Month at Qualcomm Developer Network, and in celebration we’re giving away a DragonBoard™ 410c development kit from Arrow Electronics, featuring the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 410 processor from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., for every day of the month. Tell us what you would make with a DragonBoard 410c for a chance to win and have your innovation featured on the Qualcomm Developer Network.

Hi Roy, yes the connection is tenuous but I thought it was the kind of thing that might be interest. You could of course change the configuration so that it would recognise different engines instead.

A kind of submitted my entry to the "DragonBoard" contest as a joke, I suggested that the board could be used to detect dragons. Qualcomm called my bluff and sent me a board to build my project with.

So here's what I made. The IR sensor on the front triggers the webcam to take a picture, that is in turn processed by some clever software called OpenCV which determines if there are any Dragons in the image. The knight has coloured eyes that flash red when he sees a dragon. Although the competition has ended I've plans to add a servo so his arm can move.

Thread: Gnome event in Leeds
07/06/2016 11:06:07

The event was a success and my Pi recruits managed to get IR sensors working and LEDs flashing. We also got one of them shouting messages to scare the local cats.

Forgotten gnome enlargers sounds like a forgotten episode of the Goodies.
09/04/2016 23:26:14
Perhaps the photographic enlarger could be used as a computer controller magic lantern?

I caught some of those on the reruns but definitely an influence of mine. Also Jim Henson, Monty Python and Matt Irvine.

I got invited up to Leeds to take part in this crazy workshop. Hoping to put together an animatronic Leeds / Gnome diorama so if there are any electrical or mechanically minded types who want to come along it's free to attend. And crafty paintery types invited too, or if you want to knit a gnome hat...

Thread: Using 3D prints for casting
07/04/2016 10:31:05

I've recently cast a flywheel using a 3d printed two part pattern. Here's the details of the pattern, how it was used and a bit about melting the metal. Start to end for the casting process was about 4 hours but I did make some ingots too.

Workshopshed - Printed Pattern

Workshopshed - Setting the pattern in the sand

Workshopshed - Melting and pouring metal

I've learnt most of what I know from reading the Dave Gingery book of the charcoal furnace and also also Lionel Oliver II's book of the flowerpot furnace.

Since having the pattern for this printed I've gained a Robox printer so the next pattern for my project will be printed out with that.

Yes, also have many projects on the go. Hope to sign off a couple this year. Longest running started 2009.
Thread: 3D model of Luna Park
25/01/2016 20:39:07

In the letters in MEW Malcolm Tierney correctly identified the large 3D printed building from my trip to the Makers Faire as Luna Park.

It was created by Fred Kahl from Brooklyn, New York aka the Gread Fredini, a side show performer and artist inventor.

"Entirely 3D printed, this is 1:13 scale replicate of Coney Island's famed Luna Park as it stood a hundred years ago is populated with 3D scanned portraits of Coney Island's most interesting characters"

Thread: Steel vs brick workshop
28/12/2015 11:45:21

As far as I can tell the two keys to low rust are insulation and ventilation.

The insulation slows heating and cooling so that condensation does not form on large metal items

The ventilation ensures that any moist air can be extracted and replaced with drier air.

I agree with the others that what you can get past the planners might be the determining factor rather than cost or convenience.

Thread: Syncing up Arduinos

Great article Bob, it's certainly got us talking and thinking about what can be done. A lot has changed in the microcontroller / PC world in 8 years, hindsight as they say is always 20:20

15/12/2015 21:12:24
Definitely inspired me, although it might be the end of 2016 before I get to electronics in the workshop. Got some other projects to complete first.

I think it's great that others have found use for the project, I think it's excellent
14/12/2015 20:17:09

A friend on twitter mentioned this project, it joins digital scales with a small box with optional bluetooth and an old android phone or tablet to produce a touch screen DRO.

I hope to join this up to a rotary sensor project some point next year.

On a related note there's a project called the "electronic lead screw" which does something very similar although I think there are rather too many buttons on the control panel.
