Thread: The ongoing saga of John's floor
09/06/2011 09:13:54
I'd always assumed that tales of the existence of this floor were cruel myths.
We now know that the floor does exist.
Another myth busted.
Another entry for snopes.

One of the clearest-written articles I've seen in MEW.
He explains the motivation, the design, the construction and the use -- by somebody who can write in English. Clear diagrams, clear and relevant pix.
Well done.
Thread: Living with the digital copies
06/06/2011 19:59:17
When I first started reading stuff about model engineering / metalwork etc (prompted by the need to mend one of SWMBO's telescopes), it became apparent that dimensioned diagrams are pretty much the heart of any published project. In the early digital editions these diagrams are almost illegible; in the printouts they are literally illegible.

So, given that the essential feature of the digital editions is broken, shouldn't somebody at the magazine publisher take ownership of this problem and mend it?

I think so.

I agree with these comments regarding the pdf quality, especially relating to diagrams. The original magazine viewer produced far better pdf's. It may be that the new viewer is designed to degrade any images saved to pdf in order to discourage such activity. However, the mag owners have forked out for the software now, so we're stuck with it.
Thread: Can not view Digital Issues with 64 bit IE
27/05/2011 13:18:00
Hi Dave

The execrable almost-impossible-to-print-from flash-based 'viewer' is working here in 64-bit with IE8 and with Firefox 3.6. Maybe it's specific to IE9.

Cheers,

John

Thread: Headstock Tachometer
22/05/2011 23:16:25
Hi Les
I'm very surprised that evidently it's not being published. The two that I have built have given impeccable service. It's a lot less electonically complicated than many recently-published devices and the call for a workshop-friendly tach is a frequent one.

Hi Paul
has it got a swarf guard around / in front of the chuck, with a safety interlock microswitch on it?

Yet another thanks from me, Bogs.
You are a gifted man indeed.

Hi Chris.

I'm very new to this stuff myself and faced pretty much the same question about a year ago. I chose an X3, principally because there is a huge repository of information about it on the web and in print. I wanted to take it to bits right down to the last grain of Chinese sand and then rebuild it, thinking that , by getting stuck in,  I'd at least understand how it's put together. Also the Far Eastern tools are often described (possibly unkindly now) as a 'kit of parts'.... while an older machine is also going to need some looking at. Either way you're going to get your hands dirty, so you'll need some guidance. If your guidance is (like mine) going to come from reading and forum lurking, then I'd suggest the SX3. If you have an engineering background, an engineering mate or a convenient night-school class (ha!), then please ignore the above!

Kind regards,

John

Thread: Lathe Drive Motors, 1ph or 3ph?
01/05/2010 14:28:39
Remember that your motor has an integral cooling fan. When you run the motor slowly, using the VFD/inverter, the motor won't be turning the fan quickly enough to shift enough cooling air and so the motor can overheat if run for enough time (thanks, messrs Navier and Stokes). Sounds implausible, but it does actually happen this way. So now I use a small additional fan if I'm de-rating the speed to any less than 50%.

Thread: Tachometer design

Having just completed Les's tacho I have to report that it works like a charm. The gear sensor datasheet describes its original purpose as the input for car ABS systems: certainly it works very nicely on a 65-tooth ml7 bullwheel. I just have to work out how to fix it in the correct position  (seems most happy at a radial separation of ~ 1.5mm).
Let's hope this very neat design appears in the magazine.

And you can do it on the cheap once you get your eye in for the price of used kit. I've just got an old but servicable tektronix scope for 25 quid. Next job is to find / build a PSU.
Thread: DRO for Myford ML7
24/02/2010 09:47:27

Posted by Redpiperbob on 24/02/2010 08:05:02:
Hi All
I am just toying with the idea of fitting a DRO from Allendales to my Myford ML7 can anyone tell me how to workout the length of the glass scales for the Cross slide and the main bed, and which versions to use with their DRO-AE10-2L  console
Thanks in advance Bob

Hi Bob.

I did this recently. I toyed for more than a year.  Allendale will include some large chunks of Al bracketry which renders the job trivial. I only needed  1 additional perforation (4BA hole in cross-slide) and produced a very neat job which gives accurate results. It's the first time I've drilled cast iron and the first time I've tapped cast iron and the first time I've used blacking. If I can do it ...

Just noticed Les has updated his website with Tach Rev3a. On behalf of those like me, who are enthusiastic but ignorant: Thanks!

Hi Les
As one of the lurking majority I'm posting to echo Steve's comments. I am sure there would be a lot of interest in your design amongst the unwebbed readership. Offering a stripboard layout option would widen the appeal to those without pcb-making kit and a list of Farnell/Rapid/RS order codes would simplify ordering enormously.

Please don't bin the idea. It's too good.

H
