Thread: Favourite old tools.......
18/12/2014 15:13:35

Just found this thread. My favourite old tools are 74 years old, they are called fingers and thumbs and I am lucky to still have a full set in good working order, although the left hand ones do sometimes "lock up" whilst reading a newspaper these days.

Thread: Tooth count on 2 second clock
02/12/2014 17:22:36

Hi Ron, Welcome to the forum, I am sure you will find an answer to your question on here. The thread just needs to be kept in view long enough for all the clock makers to see it . I understand that Russell is really good with clocks so should be able to answer your question given a bit more info.

Thread: Help locating small bulb
21/11/2014 22:21:54

If the torch has a reflector then a bulb is the way to go, as Ian said, LEDs only emit light in one direction making a reflector a waste of time as very little of the output hits it. I have tried many times to use reflectors with LEDs and never managed to improve beam width.

Thread: Where to start?
19/11/2014 16:19:49

Hi pgk, as John said, you are very welcome to pop over anytime, but please send me a PM beforehand as I spend a fair bit of time at "men in sheds" these days but if I know I am due a visit I will make sure I am home.

Cheers Derek.

19/11/2014 16:12:03

Nice one Robert ! I couldn't agree more.

Cheers Derek.

17/11/2014 22:26:55

I think John (bogstandard2) has a crusader, perhaps he could give you some advice on that. I will have a word with him in case he does not see this post.

Cheers Derek.

Hi pgk. If you are not too far away, Chester UK have an open week from the 1st--5th December, would be a good chance to have a good look at all things Chinese as most of the items are very much the same wherever you buy from if you do decide to buy new, just minor changes and different colours. I have had a Chester UK lathe and mill for over three years now with no problems so far. Happy hunting.

Thread: Roller combined shear and press brake
09/11/2014 22:14:27

I have had the 24" version for many years now and use the shear & press a lot. Never used the rollers and a mate of mine said he had to make up new bushes for the rollers before he could use his. The ones that came with the thing were much too slack. I would recommend spending a little time setting the thing up then it should give good service.

Thread: New addition to the family.! ;)
17/10/2014 17:26:21

Steve, MichaelG, I agree, a taper pin is much better than a straight dowel, but any wear at the point of rotation will still mean the head will have to be reset. Just me nitpicking, as I hate having to do the job myself.

Cheers Derek.

Graham, agree with you about the merc. Daughter is on her third one (all less than 12 months old when bought) and has had nothing but trouble with them all. You would think she had learned her lesson by now !!!!!

Cheers Derek.

Nick, if the head is nice and square on, leave it where it is and buy a tilting table or a tilting vice. Unless of course you don't mind spending ages traming the head up again every time you tilt it.

Cheers Derek.

Thread: A night for watching TV. ???
13/10/2014 15:51:27

Well I really enjoyed the programme as I am sure you did John. Sadly, by the time my dad died he had just about learned which end of a screwdriver to hold, but he was a really great pub landlord.smiley

Cheers Derek.

12/10/2014 18:46:09

Afraid I will be sat in front of the "box" tonight for Guy Martin's Spitfire (c4 @ 7.30), then BBC 4 @ 9.00 pm for "Mechanical Marvels" (Automata). Something must be going wrong somewhere, two interesting programs in the same year !!!

Cheers Derek.

Thread: Please take care when posting or responding off forum
09/10/2014 19:16:44

I to am sorry to have gone of topic, BUT, Russ I quite agree that when it comes to parcels there are very many who offer a much better service, however I am referring to things like , bank statements, hospital appointments, DVLA reminders, Etc. I notice that at least one of the big logistics companies already unload their letters onto Royal Mail, and it is this service that the others don't want. I cannot think of any other service that would deliver a letter from Cornwall to Shetland for about 60 pence. I have no connection whatsoever with Royal Mail but I would hate to lose that particular service.

Cheers Derek.

P.S. Get well soon Russ, your ailment is a bloody rotten one.

09/10/2014 15:49:04

RussB, that "non addressed junk mail" we all get from Royal Mail is what no doubt helps to keep all your other important mail being delivered to your door. I don't find it too much trouble to walk from the front door to the recycle bin where all that stuff goes. Should Royal Mail ever fail for whatever reason, can you see any of the other carriers ever providing the same service ?

Cheers Derek.

Thread: Pedal Power
01/10/2014 19:46:28

3/4" down to 1/4" with pedal power only !!!! WOW, bet that bloke had muscles on his spit.

Cheers Derek.

Thread: What type of pin is this?
29/09/2014 19:07:00

Well Mr. Rudd, that is as good an example of someone spitting out their dummy as I have seen in a long time. I have no doubt that the chap WILL make up his own mind anyway, and what has HEAVY engineering got to do with hobby engineering ???

Cheers Derek.

Thread: Topsy Turvy Clock
23/09/2014 16:45:00

WOW !!! Nice job, and that looks like the worlds best excuse for being late. "sorry but I didn't have a clue what time it was"

Cheers Derek.

Thread: This must have been covered?
20/09/2014 17:27:10

Hi Matthew, you will no doubt now be told at least 30 different ways to set up the lathe correctly. Best of luck deciding which one.

Cheers Derek.
