Thread: A bit more upcycling. |

Take some scrap 'Perspex'. My mate owns the local scrapyard, and they get some great stuff in there at times. Mark out and cut some discs to roughly the right size on the bandsaw. |

Start with a length of chrome plated brass tube removed from a very expensive free standing bath tap. As the thread title suggests, a scrap one, and set it up on the mill using my little home made indexing unit. I have a Vertex dividing head, but that was too big to use for this job. More to follow. |
Thread: Death. |
09/06/2021 10:05:45 |
I have the sad task of announcing the death of a former member of the forum, namely John 'Bogstandard' Moore, who passed away early Monday morning. I am sure many members will remember John as a top class engineer who could offer good advice, but who could also speak out in plane language against those who he thought were offering bad advice, a trait which did not make him too many friends. He was however, one of the most generous men i have ever met, and was more than willing to help out anyone with any problems they may have had. R.I.P. John, a top class man and a good friend. |

Hi Bill, had a look for you on FB but can't find you there, sent you a PM with my name so maybe you could send me a friend request. GL, i do read quite a lot and i have a page all about myself in a book that a mate recently wrote. I am also due to have a whole chapter to myself in an other book due to be published soon. Sometime in 2023 a book about the Beatles, by Mark Lewisohn will contain various anecdotes from myself. With my current health problems i may never get to read the 2023 one. Cheers Dek. |

Hi Gerd. John is still around, but not in the best of health. A few years ago he had to have a half of one lung removed and was then no longer able to use his workshop. He sold all his tools and machines and contented himself with some model tanks. However his health has recently got worse and , like myself, now has to be content to watch daytime TV. A fate that most folk would consider to be worse than death. To give you some idea how bad that is, i have joined Facebook to try and escape the TV. I think it very unlikely that John will ever post on any of the ME forums again. Cheers, Dek. |
Thread: Cutting a V-Groove in Aluminium |

I have used 90 degree spot drills to put small V groves in things. Always worked well for me. |

I bet he is glad it hasn't got a starting handle. |

Hi Stuart. I bought both the DB 10 VS, and the Champion 20V mill about 7 years ago, and to date the only problem i have had was a broken NVR switch on the mill about 1 year ago. Cost a few £ for a new one and no more problems since. Dek. |

DANNY M2Z & TONY PRATT1, I think you both missed the point. I did say that it would need all young men the world over to refuse joining any army. I would like to know though DANNY, just who were the army protecting us from in Korea, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The only thing the army were defending there was the Bush family profits. |

How to insult the memory of the people who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the privileges we take for granted that others dream of. Way to go..... I agree 100% with Bazyle regarding the army. If macho young blokes the world over refused to go killing people and getting themselves killed on behalf of some megalomaniac, who will hide somewhere in a deep hole until the killing is over, then the world would be a much better place. Sad to say that it needs to happen everywhere before wars can end. |

Ove the past year or so we have had a dozen people join the forum having bought someling like a Colchester or M300 as their first lathe, and some getting a bridgeport too. Fifty years ago a beginner would have thought themselves lucky to find a second hand Drummond or Perfecto. People have way more disposable income nowadays along with the comparitive lower cost of machines. Things have gone up a notch too in expectations. Is it even possible to buy a new car nowadays without electric windows and aircon let alone a radio. I remember the days when even a heater and carpets were 'extras' in most cars. |
Thread: Cutting brass with saw questions |
03/07/2020 10:08:49 |
In the vidios Bob posted, the saw in use is not a piercing saw but an Eclipse fretsaw and the table is Hobbies Ltd top of the range cutting table. I still have both of those that I bought in the early 50s. Just saying. Dek. |
Thread: The cost of cheap (Free) materials |
22/06/2020 22:53:29 |
I agree with everything you have said there Bob. If I had to buy any of the brass for my fibre optic clock from the normal dealers it would never have got built. Every last bit of brass was from my local scrapyard, and some of it was in large lumps that would have cost a fortune. The only things new on the clock were the electrics. Dek. |
Thread: Bar top "copper". What is it? |

I was given an old table with what looked like a hammered copper top. It turned out to be copper plated fibre glass. |

Welcome from a South Cheshire bloke. I have a ME mate in Wales who used to make the same things as yourself, but these days he makes novelty torches to sell in the USA. Cheers, Dek. |
