Hi Bob
No offence intended. I guess i would be p**s'd of if any of my decent work had been used, but i do'nt mind you using the silly stuff as above. I have seen my mates work lifted of another website and claims that it was made in china,so i only ever post pics that dont matter. I still stand by my remarks about the south, allthough i was mainly referring to Londeners, who allways expect the world to go to them.EG look at all the shouting about the Beeb move to Salford. I chose the name magpie, because over the years i have collected a vast amount of what my wife calls junk, Bloody cheek! it's all good stuff i tell you.
Cheers Derek. Edited By magpie on 19/04/2012 20:17:23 |

Hi Bob There might be a clue to where Ron comes from in the bit of his post that says "I live in Manchester". For all those who think the edge of the world is just north of watford, Manchester is a large city, about 180 miles north west of that horrid home of the bankers.<--- Not sure if the first letter of that last word is the right one though!!!

Thread: How do I begin with no knowlegde of machining |
09/04/2012 17:22:13 |
Hi Neil I would agree with Jeff (above) with regards welding ally. As an ex Rolls Royce coachbuilder i have spent a big part of my life welding ally, and it takes a fair while to learn, but even with the practice i have had over the years, i would NOT weld a fuel tank. I have seen far too many go bang, even when the were thought to be well cleaned out. Cheers Derek |

Thread: which is the best small milling and lathe machines to buy |
03/04/2012 09:29:18 |
Hi David Ihave dealt with Warco and Chester, but both my mill and lathe are from Chester, mainly because there are not too far away should i have any problems. Both firms have given me good service over the years, and both offer similar products. I think Chester machines are a bit less expensive, but there tooling is more expensive,so roundabouts, and swings realy! As others will no doubt advise, go for the largest that space and price will allow, but remember that once you have the machines you will also need tooling, wich in the case of the mill could allmost double the cost of the machine itself. If you can manage to get to Harrogate in early May, then you will be able to see all the traders in one place and make a more informed choice. If i was about to spend a fair bit of cash i would realy make the effort to get there, and talk to as many folk as you can to avoid being dissatisfied with what you end up buying Good hunting Cheers Derek |
Thread: Forth road Bridge nuts |
31/03/2012 12:37:30 |
I know a thing called a torque mulltiplier was used to tighten wheel nuts on trucks and buses years ago,do'nt know if they still use them. I think it was a planetary gear device to reduce the amount of effort needed to tighten big stuff. Dek |

Thank you gents one and all. Stew, and Bogs, you both know where i live, door allways open, and a brew only takes a mo. Ian you are very welcome to pay me a visit for a natter and a brew. I see you do'nt live to far away, afraid i cannot visit folk further than walking distance, as the only wheels i have are on the rocker covers. The track is at the Elephant pub in Shavington, and is part of the classic car meeting on the 8th July 2012,which this year will also have lots of stationary engines as part of the show. Cheers Dek |

In an unknown land far away, lord knows when, some barmpot invented rocker cover racing. Now being a barmpot myself, when someone started it at a local classic car show, i thought, have a go lad plenty daft enough for me. Well i did, and won at my first attempt. (yes there were others there not just me) The idea is,find an old rocker cover, stick some wheels on and away you go. No power plants allowed, just gravity. The track is about 30ft long with a ramp at one end to get things rolling, and that is about it. Very simple(like me), but good fun,so if any of you out there live close enough to Crewe, Cheshire, and fancy having a go,you have untill 8th July to build one. Send me a pm if you are daft enough, and i will send you all the details Photo's of my efforts in my album. Cheers Derek |
Thread: Warco minor mill/drill |
29/03/2012 15:50:21 |
Hi Mervyn I do'nt know what the Warco mill you have is like, but my little mill is a seig X1 type, and in order to engage the fine down feed, you have to push in a button on the left hand side of the mill just behind the fine feed wheel. I think it must engage some kind of dog clutch, becausein order to engage i have to keep turning the wheel, whilst pushing hard on the button. Hope this helps! Cheers Derek |
Thread: Tiny brushes |
21/03/2012 22:22:55 |
On the subject of brushes, i use one of the brushes that women use for putting on hair dye, for lots of small cleaning jobs. They have just one row of bristles, about 1 1/2" wide, and are great for cleaning "T" slots ,and lots of other small cleaning jobs Cheers Derek |

Thread: What Mill? |
09/03/2012 21:58:45 |
Hi Ray I bought the axminster version about 10 years ago, and found the length of the table a bit restrictive, so i bought the long table and leadscrew from Arc Euro. I dont know if they still sell these as an "add on", but they sell the same machine with the long table allready fitted (super X1L). The only problem i have had with the machine is a stripped gear, through being a bit to ambitious with a job. New gear was a few quid, and no more problems since. I now have a Chester Champion 20V,but i still use the X1L quite a lot for the smaller jobs, and would not want to part with it. Cheers Derek Ps Check your messages, I have sent you a pm. Thread: Over engineered? |
06/03/2012 19:45:55 |
I allways avoid ANYTHING that says "new improved", because it is ALLWAYS a whole lot worse than the stuff it replaced. What "new improved" realy means, is we have found a way to make the stuff a lot cheaper to "improve" our profits. Derek |
