Thread: Milling Chucks |
08/02/2011 16:05:53 |
Hi all, I notice that there is still talk of `give it a bash` to remove MT chucks. I believe that I have described "my" system on another thread somewhere. I say "my" in the sense that it is what I use but not original thinking - I got the idea from elsewhere.
I have got a top hat shaped bar of steel on the top of my vertical mill spindle, secured to the spindle with 3 Allen grub screws. Inside the top hat, there is a trapped nut, cross-pinned to the drawbar. Top of the drawbar has another nut cross-pinned to it. The top hat was machined from very large AF Hex steel bar. Spanners on the flats of the top hat and the nut pinned to the top of the drawbar, the `hidden` trapped nut cannot go anywhere, forcing the drawbar to revolve but not move axially but will unscrew from the back of the 2MT taper on the Clarkson chuck, shoving same out of the female taper. Works like a dream!
Another thing, anyone got the damper ring jammed? My cure for that, is a disc of thin plastic, like a giant washer inside, stopping it sticking. The plastic was supplied by Nescafe, off the top of their tins! |
Thread: Aircraft Photos. |
04/02/2011 11:35:03 |
Ian S C `s aircraft photos in his album. I note that there is a Harvard in what looks like orange and grey. There are or were, 2 Harvard P6`s at Shoreham A/P, West Sussex. One was painted all over in blue and the other, bright yellow. The shades of blue and yellow could be described as `fairground` colours. I beleve that the blue one is still in use for pleasure flights but not seen the yellow one for a long time. An ex - RAF friend once told me that the pilots are not allowed to give them full throttle on take off to avoid upsetting nearby residents because the props are so large that the tips would break the sound barrier at full throttle. Always know when one flying over Brighton - the noise! Often hear and later, see, a Chinook flying over the area. |
Thread: Square peg in a square hole |
04/02/2011 11:03:52 |
SMEE stand @ an XBN. possibly within last couple of years, they were demonstrating a method of making square holes in round bar. I think it involved milling out a `trench` down one side, deep enough to end up central in bar then filling in outer edge with a piece silver soldered in, leaving a square hole in the middle. This would `do` for larger jobs requiring strength. Just mentioning this for future ref if anyone needs a strong job, but above method with deformed tube should be sufficient for clock winding. |

Hullo Peter,
Sorry I cannot help with your request but have spotted something else - "many thousands" (of photos) on your `puter. Are you aware that should something go wrong like your `puter acquiring a bug nessitating the hard disc being wiped and re-installation of software, you would loose the lot? "Burn" them on to a re-writable CD for safe keeping. This would also free up a large space on your hard disc with other benefits such as speeding things up.

Thread: Boxford lathe metric compound gear |
31/01/2011 10:17:08 |
Hi all,
Re John Olsen`s comment about Myfords 127 gear/40DP. Somewhere, I have seen a description of a solution to the size prob. It was to cut a 40 tooth and 127 tooth, both gears to be 40DP and mesh together. The 127 as a driven on the leadscrew and the 40 tooth wheel on a `driver` arbor with an ordinary 20DP gear on same arbor meshing with the rest of the 20DP train. New prob.! - gear cutting the two 40DP wheels. My simple solution to the dividing part of this is to borrow a 20DP Mford 127 gear from someone to use for dividing while you cut same no of teeth to 40DP.
I have not done this as I cannot be bothered - its possible to fudge approximations to most metric/BA threads sufficiently accurately for short lengths neede for amateur purposes.

Thread: Looking for ME magazines |

Hi Terryd,
You say your local library has MEs. I assume bound vols. How do you manage to scan them, since when I put a bound vol. on my flatbed, it doesn`t scan whole pages properly as book will not open flat?

Hi All,
From my notebook;

21 Graham Road,
Paignton
TQ3 1BB
Bases, plinths, Perspex cases and domes, turntables, display boxes.
I cannot recall where I found the above but suspect it was probably a link from another site. I have no connection with this business and have not done any business with same, so readers should take usual precautions. Having said that, hope this helps.

Thread: Metal storage |
29/12/2010 17:19:16 |
Hi Pailo,
How about using different - length tubes and sorting stock lengths to suit?
For plate/sheet, use a purpose made rack with dividers and stand stock on edge. It may be necessary to fix the rack to a wall as I would think that it would soon get tippy. All depends upon sizes really, are we talking about 6" square or 4ft x 2ft sheets?

Thread: Late delivery of magazines due to adverse weather |
29/12/2010 17:10:01 |
Hullo Peter,
You say stuff is getting through so you doubt its the bad weather as such.
How about this being the reason? - Royal Mail managers up to their ears in mail @ sorting offices decide that Joe public will create a hue + cry if important Cr Card and other bills held up so people get charged for ` non-payment.` Also other types of Financial/Legal letters, Court papers, Summons, Hospital appointments and so on.
What would you do ? Sort out piles of mags posted en-masse and chuck `em all on one side to deal with after main backlog of more important post has been cleared.
Just a thought. |
Thread: Footplate Experience Recommendations |

PS, I`ve got a bus pass now!! |
27/12/2010 22:37:47 |
Hi,
A great many moons ago, when I was a teenager actually, I obtained a footplate pass from BRand had a ride on an M7 tank from Ryde StJohns road down to Ventnor and the other roue, out to Newport and Cowes, all on the Isle of Wight. This was just befor closure of Wroxall and Ventnor section and complete closure of Newport/Cowes line under the Beeching cutbacks of non-viable routes.
The journey from Wroxall to Ventnor was an experience! Most of it was in a tight fitting tunnel under Knighton Down and the tunnel had a bend in the middle so you couldn`t see the other end. It was absolutely choking on the footplate with brown sulphurous gases/smoke.
Ventnor was in a bowl shape carved out of the chalk, rather like the Chalkpits museum, West Sussex. Down the West sidewall, large caves had been hewn. I dont know original use for them but when I was there, some were in use for coal merchants storage.
When we came back from Cowes and entered the Junction with the Sandown/Shanklin/Ventnor line, said junc. having a speed limit of 40MPH, the well-worn tank was making a deafening racket, jerking the pole reverser backwards and forwards.
Happy memories!

I have seen the Vulcan several times - wow!!
Also seen and heard the Eurofighter. When it goes away and turns so you can see the exhausts, the noise just has to be heard to be believed!
They say Concord was noisy. I was at a Stones concert at the old Wembley anmd looked up to see Concord going over, completely `silent` like a dirigible, the concert was so loud. I`ve now got Tinnitus.

Thread: Which slideway oil is best? |
22/12/2010 22:55:19 |
I use a concoction recommended by Guy Lautard (lautard.com).
1 fluid ounce of STP or Wynns oil treatment (makes concoction very sticky so it stays put)
1 fluid ounce of Molyslip oil, this is full of tiny balls of graphite which get into any very small crevice G is a very good lube.
A quantity of EP90, an extreme pressure oil. Cannot remember how much of this - will have to look iy up + get back.
Mix up by shaking vigourously in used plastic oil bottle.
Seems to work OK

Hi all,
Re my prev. moan 18/12 about ME4393+MEW172.
Monday,20/12, I was in Smiths, Churchill Sq., Brighton as soon as they opened. I counted 9 copies No.4393, 5 copies No.172 and approx a dozen (didnt actually count them) of January EIM. These are the dregs left after the weekend vultures.
I have all 3 by subs but `good ol` snailmail` still failed on Tuesday. I think that as EIM hasnt arrived, it must be our wonderful postal system, not myhobbystore.

David Clark 1,
I am using this `moans thread` to tell you about the letter dated "Dec 3 2010"received today (16th) "Snail Mail" to blame??
1) It appears to be mass produced with half the Market Harboro` address chopped off.
2)"FREE access to our online archive of past issues allowing you to search fo your favourite articles".
No it doesn`t! Even after logging on with my subsciber no., go into "Archive" and it demands another 30 quid. Or what am I doing wrong and if so, why doesn`t the letter explain how?
3) Why does the letter (dated only 3rd Dec) state my renewal will star with "Mar 2011 Iss 174" ? Is this to assist myhobbystores cashflow?!!
Sorry to moan about letter whci is very similar to many previous renewal reminders but I think my point no 2 is a serious complaint.
BTW, I very much enjoyed XBN and think bothME/MEW very much improved. Happy Xmas! |
